call client to go over offer with them they would get around 10k in their pocket. they claim they're homeless and are like what can i do with 10k? i love my job.
My client just told me she “accused her husband of being Jewish.” Because he’s always trying to be cheap and haggle with people. She said this in reference to me always pressing for more with the mediator. I didn’t know what to do. If I told her I’m Jewish and I’m offended it would make this entire mediation completely awkward . Fucking people man. Let’s get this mediation done and let me wash the grossness away. Honestly people in Mississippi have seen so few Jews they don’t even know they are being offensive.
Yes you would. I promise you, you don’t want to figure up the hourly rate for some of those worker’s comp cases.
I once had an associate at Blank Rome send me a 12 page discovery meet and confer letter at 8:30 PM on Christmas Eve. I pull out the email and letter every office Christmas party.
Haven't attended a company event outside of work hours in years and don't plan to. This year it's a Saturday night and we are supposed to dress more formal but wear sneakers (we are so zany!) and it costs $75 per person. Granted, most of that money is donated to charity but your average line worker isn't forking over $150 for a holiday work event for them and their significant other. And they wonder why people aren't signing up.
AIG tried to tell us yesterday that they weren't paying until 30 days post mediation as that is how long it takes them to check if my client has medicare or medicaid. They said it was a federal law and mandatory. I'm not a dumbass and know that's not a mandatory federal law for reporting on individual cases. I spent an hour going back and forth with them about that and they finally caved and said they'd accept an affidavit from her that she's not a medicaid or medicare recipient. Fucking insurance companies man.
Your law firm requires you to pay $75 to go to a law firm event? Am I reading this correctly? If so that's the biggest load of shit in the history of loads of shit. That's way worse than the cruise as a matter of principle.
Man, working much more than I'd like this week. We hired a half legal assistant/half paralegal that's fresh out of paralegal school, this is her first office job. She was supposed to be my right-hand woman and it's been a disaster. I've answered more discovery requests from scratch in the past few weeks than I have in the past few years -- because it takes her literally 2+ weeks to get a first draft of responses, even in cases in which we have a good demand. Have sent her 2 complaints to get filed over the past three weeks, summons hasn't even been drafted yet. Way too much handholding. The draft discovery she does send me is really bad. She objected to providing previous addresses, names of children, or physicians from before the accident. She didn't know we were allowed to supplement discovery responses and thought what we put down now was final. We had a pretty tense meeting yesterday, told her this isn't sustainable. I don't know what the answer is, but we have to move faster. She then complained that she's also completing her undergraduate degree and finals are coming up so she's stressed. I try to be an empathetic person, but you sought a full-time role while knowing you'd be in school. I can be very flexible, but when it starts impacting my job we have issues. I've had like 5 discovery conferences over the past few weeks with defense counsel for long overdue discovery. So what's her suggestion? "Could we have a meeting every morning so I know what to prioritize?" Pretty stressed about heading to Patagonia for the month of December. (I'm not expecting any sympathy with my lifestyle, more just venting) I have the go ahead to fire her if I can find a new assistant. Trying to cut her some slack, but made it very clear I'm not happy so far. And hiring good people fucking suckkkkkks. Give me a grizzled, salty 50+ year old paralegal that gets shit done.
yeah what did you think you were getting? if you want a good paralegal now you have to create them. Good paralegals don’t fucking leave because they will get paid whatever is necessary to make them stay.
This. Have to be willing to train people from scratch or pay a metric fuck ton for a 50 year vet that gets shit done.
All of my legal assistants right now were former receptionists. It took them 18-24 months to get to where we want them
Just learning the hard way. Complete naivete on my part. I had way too much faith in the paralegal institution.
Also, this is the smallest firm I've ever worked at. At the big firms, while there's def some administrative bloat, there's also more of a budget to retain experienced staff. Much harder to do at smaller firms, I'm thinking.
And I am taking much more of a hands-on role the past few weeks, but it's coming at the expense of other tasks where I could be making money. I thought PI world was just sit back and collect checks, WTF
12 mediations in the books. I’ll have done probably around 40 before year end. Settled every case so far. Fellas, this is it. My retirement job.
Took delivery of my dream car a week ago and drove it up separately to the in-laws in NorVa last night, took my FIL for a late night joy ride and got caught doing 129 in a 55. Trooper was kind of cool, it was late and no traffic, so he didn’t arrest me or impound it, but got a reckless for speed. Juggsian research tells me I’ll be doing some weekend jail time even if I get a lawyer - should I still get a lawyer or just throw myself at the mercy of the court? Are these cases ever winnable? I have one previous speeding ticket from 2020 for 15-19mph over fwiw.
Find the dude wherever you are who is a former prosecutor and friendly with the office and get a deal. Expungement will probably be more important than anything else in the end. Shit like that can fuck you up from having an umbrella, which you probably need if you’re driving fast as fuck and have assets.
This is sound advice. Follow it. Despite the prevailing TMB lay opinion, it’s better to lawyer up 99.9% of the time.
Has anyone else gotten an email from a client that tried to ruin their Thanksgiving or is it just me?
This was from 2014, but the short answer is that you might be fucked: https://jalopnik.com/what-every-driver-should-know-about-speeding-in-virgini-1669902845
One of my coworkers in on vacation in NYC and just got thrown out of radio city music hall because of Dolan's fucking ban on every lawyer of firm's that sue MSG. Dolan is such a fucking scumbag.
I'm surprised they be able to keep track of all of them and care enough to ID them and toss them. Impressive.
Good thing most businesses don't operate like that or I couldn't go anywhere. I've sued like every big box store and grocery store around here.
100% they're pulling pictures from our website. Wonder if we can sue them for training the AI model on our IP.
