So, there will likely be a 1000 feet water slide going down St-Denis (one of the city's busiest streets). http://www.mtlblog.com/2014/08/mont...may-be-transformed-into-a-giant-water-slide/#
Yeah, it's cool. How's Calypso, though? We keep hearing it's the biggest in the country but I've never been.
Never been. Driven by a few times. If I am going to drive out east I'd just as soon go to Sauveur. Love it there.
I just started a Toronto vs Montreal visit for what I think will be August 6th - 9th but then found this thread (again) so my question is: A) Montreal seems like it would be more entertaining then Toronto but since I won't be doing strip clubs (I love them but will be with pregnant wife) I wanted to ensure we would have a good time to fill up 3 nights 2) Porter Airlines - pretty cheap out of Chicago with a layover but any red flags with them? 3) Can I do 3 nights without a car? If so, what is the best area to stay that is the most walkable. Any other pieces of advice is much appreciated as I'm going to try to book a flight and hotel this week.
A) Plenty to do in town. Strip clubs are part of the fun, but far from the reason most people visit. You'll have plenty of fun. B) Typical cheap airfare. No red flag, they're reliable, just beware of luggage fees, etc. C) Yeah, I sold my car when I moved here. You don't need one. Try to stay downtown/Plateau (you're not really gonna find hotels anywhere else, except for the airport), or maybe Griffintown/St-Henri/Mile-End if you're going the airbnb route.
Tony Marinaro @TonyMarinaro TQOD 20 yr old Jonathan Drouin (from SteAgathe) was a healthy scratch again. Is he YOUR HABS answer at Center? What if TBY wants Galchenyuk?
Don't knock Toronto. Has a pretty cool nightlife. Different than Montreal. Porter is a good airline. Small puddle jumper planes. And both cities you can can/subway. Champ question for you. Does Montreal have an equivalent hotel to the Gans in New York??
Not really. Seems like a mix of the Ritz, W and Crystal. Montreal's hotel offering is kinda behind, it's really, really standard with not much out of the ordinary.
Boo. Trying to organize a boys trip and one of the guys probably won't be able to get out for a trip bigger than Montreal/Tremblant/Toronto. I'd like to take the train down and do Montreal tbh but we shall see.
Have your fun outside the hotel instead? And IMO, the W or the Crystal would be what you're looking for.
Never been to the festival itself, but Fat Bitch has. The city is really fun. Not necessarily crazy like Mardi Gras, but just a lot of fun to be had everywhere.
Probs gonna need to happen. Advice on cool(ish) hotels? It'll be for my birthday so I'm feeling indulgent. Also are single day tix gonna be available?
pretty sure they released single day passes closer to the event... they usually judge how many weekend passes they've sold but it's never been an issue
My gf booked us the Loft Hotel. Some others we looked at were Le Saint-Sulpice, Le Place d'Armes, Governor Hotel, W, Fairmont, Intercontinental, and Pierre du Calvet. Prices were all reasonable especially with the good $ exchange rate. We really had no clue where to specifically book - and a lot of the good info itt got lost in TMB crash.
Cool hostel, friend of mine lives right across the street, and he often hangs out at the hostel's bar.
Girl I studied with in College (Hospitality) is now the GM of the Place d'Armes, if you'd like I can ask her if she can set you up something?
there were also a lot of decent options on airbnb it looked like, remember this place https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/3094663?checkin=07/30/2015&checkout=08/03/2015&s=dhmL#
Cool, if a bunch of us are gonna be in town for Osheaga, that could work. Either at a bar, or we can start it off at my apartment, make some poutine and then move from there. It's pretty close to Berri-UQAM.
Osheaga is definitely a good time. I'd like to go back, unfortunately can't do it this year. Champ, a couple of buddies of mine will be driving up weekend of June 12th. I might tag along last minute with my Greek friend that you met, you around?
Champ Trying to book a hotel in Montreal for early August. I'm looking for one that is walking distance to a couple good restaurants and bars - maybe even one with a good hotel bar. Price point around $200 a night. Any suggestions? ** update - booked Hotel Bonaventure **
-Square Phillips Hotel (Downtown, right by McGill Metro, so it's walking distance to a bunch of good downtown restaurants, while also being walking distance to the Old Port (which is beautiful, and also has a lot of bars and restaurants) -Hotel Place D'armes (Old Port, rooftop terrasse, clean, modern) -Omni (might be getting a bit dated, but I believe they've done some work recently, as downtown as it gets) -Loews Hotel Vogue (they did a lot of work, it's modern, downtown, got a lot of restaurants around it. Might be a bit expensive, but would be worth it if you can find a deal, or something) -LHotel (small, new hotel in the Old Port, I've only heard good things) Those should all be around 175-225. Not as tight with the hotel prices as I was in college, though. Otherwise, others checking out include the classics : Sofitel, W, Crystal, Westin, Queen Elisabeth, Nelligan, though those might be closer to 300$. By the way, hotel bars and restaurants aren't really a thing here due to unions. Every hotel has one, but most of them are mediocre and not worth a visit. Edit : The Intercontinental has rooms under 200$ in August. It's 5*, they underwent major renovations in the last 10 years, it's 5 minutes away (walking) from both the Old Port and downtown, and they've got an absinthe bar. They're likely quiet for some reason in August and their system must be trying to fill up the rooms.
Oh, that's the former Hilton. Location is great, and you likely got a nice deal, since the owners must be trying to fill it up. Curious to see what they're doing. Same group also bought Le Concorde (one of Quebec City's best hotels), so they're likely pumping lots of money into their new projects.
Service sucks and getting back through security to the US is slow as fuck. Locals who were flying also said it is pretty shitty.

Olympic Stadium's tower to become a skiing ramp - http://www.mtlblog.com/2015/06/the-olympic-stadium-tower-will-be-turned-into-a-giant-ski-jump/ Via CJAD For More Stories Like These I’m not sure if the city of Montreal is just toying with my inner child, I really hope not, because I’ve been dreaming of an event like this one since the first time I saw the Olympic Stadium. Having no idea what the mast of the stadium was, I just assumed it was some kind of big jump. But sadly I was wrong and I later discovered it was just a glorified elevator that leads nowhere. That is, until now! In honour of Montreal’s 375th anniversary, the Olympic Stadium will be hosting a one of a kind event. The mast of the stadium will be transformed into a giant ski jump and the best skiers in the world will be invited to Montreal for a big air competition. The group responsible for RedBull’s Crashed Ice Event, Groupe E.S.T., have confirmed that the project is definitely feasible and there would be no damage to the stadium’s structure. But let’s face it, even if there was a chance of damage, I think most people would still back the project. Testing for the project begins in February 2016, and if everything goes smoothly, it will be ready for Montreal’s 375th anniversary in 2017.
For enjoying my beautiful city in the summer? I'll be back in November. You know I can't go too long without a bricksmash.
