Allen Iverson handled this like a champ and NBA players should be thanking him for where they are today. He was willing to put his money where his mouth is. He took the fine, suspensions, or whatever but he pretty much said fuck off and continued to do his thing. Eventually things in the NBA began to change. Iverson would be in the norm now.

To compare harassment to not being able to say without repercussion your social beliefs is stupid. Since you seem to champion this so much where the hell were you when rosanne got fired for her offensive diatribe. Shouldn’t she have been allowed to stay?

To compare it to slavery is bullshit and you dance around that. You are ridiculous.

Roseanne was fired for racist tweets. Comparing that to bringing light to racist acts is mind blowing. One is bad, one is good. Can you not grasp the difference?

First amendment is first amendment whether You agree with the message or not. Don’t champion the first for one group and refuse to apply it to another.

I am not caping for anyone asshat. Just extending the first amendment argument to its logical conclusion. It applies whether you like the message or not, it applies whether the message is offensive or not.

If you are going to claim it should apply to player protests and claim the owners have a “slaveowner mentality” and shouldn’t be allowed to punish players for excercising their first amendment than the same thing could be applied to a broad number of areas.

I see your point. They should be allowed to speak out they shouldn’t be silenced. That ability wasn’t taken away from Roseanne. It’s a fine line it’s almost a distinction without difference (this being a 1st issue). The government isn’t taking away their 1st right but they aren’t being allowed to express that right. Them not being allowed to speak out is in essence taking away a fundamental right.

They should be allowed to speak out and face whatever consequences that comes from what they said. That’s what happened to Roseanne. So it’s not the same thing. A better analogy would have been if Roseanne wasn’t allowed to post her racist shit. She had that right she just doesn’t have the right to not face consequences for her words.

Content matters. I'm ok with business owners getting rid of people that spew hate. Those people don't need a platform to speak from. I'm not ok with silencing people that are trying to bring positive change bc it makes some people uncomfortable. If talking about the unfair treatment of minorities by law enforcement makes you (not you personally) uncomfortable, you probably need to stop and think about why that is before you cry for the players to shut up and play ball.

I am okay with a company firing an employee for saying something they (the company doesn’t agree with) be it what Roseanne said or speaking out agains social inequities. A private company is allowed to do that. I am not for Roseanne or players not being allowed to say what they want.

Right, no disagreement there. Say whatever you want. If it's similar to Roseanne, I'm cool with a company distancing themselves from you. If what you say is in opposition to social injustices, I'd prefer the company side with you, not try to silence you.

so the point of him saying it like that is to get attention

because these things have been said before and they don't get attention so at some point you have to start pushing the narrative by changing the language

Iverson complained about the dress code when it was instituted, but he followed it and was long gone by the time Silver relaxed the rules. Things changed because the players started having fun with it and embracing different fashion styles, not because of anything AI did or didn’t do.

Coincidentally, AI went on air this year to whine that the League should be stricter in their enforcing the code. He’s convinced it was all a big conspiracy against him personally.

I am not sure the NFL treats players any worse than any league (even the NBA) or most large corporations. A player can do or say whatever they want. If the team or league doesn’t like it they will fine or suspend them. If the player really gave a shit they would continue with their stance. Either something will change or the player/players fade away. Whatever happens they find out how important their stance is to society and how much the team or league thinks they need them.

See my Iverson example. How many times was he suspended or fined? Eventually the NBA changed not him.

I missed where the NBA isn't letting players back on teams, so your point of "not sure NFL treats their players worse than any other league", is incorrect which is LeBron's point.

NFL also does not have guaranteed contracts unlike the other big three American leagues. That alone invalidates the argument.

He did get a lot of fines relative to other players (he was 4th on the all time list a couple years ago), but it was for routine stuff—disparaging the officials, calling fans a slur, skipping practice, etc... He got 6 over his career. When the dress code came into effect, he just went out and bought a bunch of ridiculously oversized suits.

I think you are missing more than that.

If a shitty bench player took some random stand on his own, I doubt he last long in the NBA. Are you suggesting Kaepernick was a league star?

He went from being a starting quarterback who made the Pro Bowl to unemployable in a league where there's not a deep hierarchy of solid quarterbacks based on his social agenda. You can't honestly argue with a straight face that he wouldn't be a top-level backup quarterback or even a third-stringer. Fuck, Robert Griffin III is employed by an NFL team and Kaep was better than he's ever been. Mark fucking Sanchez started games this season in the league.

Yes, his social agenda likely cost him a job in the league. That job was also likely a backup job. I don’t see many backups or bench players bringing their social agenda to work. That’s a pretty big risk.

A backup player with a similar profile would be employed in the NBA, which makes your "NFL treats its players as well as the other leagues" statement look extremely foolish. Don't double down on this.
