I'm sure they're guaranteed in some way, but that doesn't mean they're stuck with them for the length of the contract if they want to get out of it. If Dan Campbell ends up being the next Patricia through three years, they aren't going to keep him around because of his contract. He's going to get fired, and they'll hire a new coach. It's not like basketball where they're on your cap if you fire them.
Right. But the point most are making, is why guarantee that you are paying Dan Campbell for 6 years? He wasn't some hot commodity that needed to be convinced to take the job. Is it a big deal? No, but it was still bad business to give him a 6 year deal.
They might have wanted to do it for PR reasons to say this was their guy and he's going to get time to get it right. Or they just suck at negotiating stuff. Probably the latter. I have no clue. I don't know how much he's making, or where that ranks compared to other coaches. I don't know what a potential buyout structure looks like. And I don't really care, either. If he sucks, he'll get fired before the contract ends. If he's good enough to keep around that long, they'll rip up the last years to give him more money, anyway.
Yep, and it has no impact on the salary cap. I’m also quite confident the Ford family will be OK financially one way or the other.
Apparently the national sports media has decided Dan Campbell’s press conference is the symbol for all that is wrong with NFL hiring practices. Didn’t think it would come to this so quickly.... DETROIT vs EVERYBODY!!!!
There was a lot of talk here and in the media on Campbell getting a 6-year deal. Michael Lombardi tweeted it earlier and I think he's probably right that the Stafford thing might be the reason why.
I'm pleased with the staff so far for a first time HC OC - Anthony Lynn DC - Aaron Glenn RB/AHC - Duce Staley OL - Hank Fraley DB - Aubrey Pleasant
Holmes might try to hire some scouts or other front office types to promotions. A lot of GMs seem to do that after they leave an org. I don't think this had much to do with Holmes. Pleasant is from the area and may have just wanted to return. There have always been rumors about him coming back to Michigan whenever Harbaugh had an opening in the secondary, but he became a big enough commodity in recent years that he probably wouldn't have left the NFL for anything less than a DC role. He also may have just been pissed he got passed over again for DC in LA and decided to bolt.
Both he and Glenn have very good reps in that area. Given how badly we need Okudah to not suck moving forward, hopefully that works out.
What do you think of the staff Campbell & Holmes have built so far? John Dorsey - Sr. Personnel Executive Anthony Lynn - OC Aaron Glenn - DC Dave Fipp - ST Aubrey Pleasant- Passing Game Coordinator/DB Duce Staley - RB Hank Fraley - OL (retained from previous staff) Mark DeLeone - LB
I think on the surface the staff is solid, but I don't really see any possible assistant out there who is going to cover for him being himself. His personality is going to soak up the entire spotlight.
My theory was he had to surround himself with good coordinators to make up for his lack of coordinator experience. Similar to Mike Vrabel who talks about cutting his own nuts off. I think Campbell has succeeded.
Mike Vrabel has an excellent defense and a top 3 RB in the NFL. The Lions are one of the worst teams in the NFL. That's the battle Campbell is facing. His soundbites are going to fall dead flat when they get blown out by Rodgers.
No, my theory is that unless Campbell can find immediate success, his aura of tough guy football is going to quickly fall on deaf ears in the locker room. IMO he was best suited to take a good team that needed a locker room shakeup, not a bottom feeder that is about to start a complete rebuild.
I don't know. What I have been reading about Dan Campbell is that players & coaches around him love him. I agree his blustery press conferences are over the top & a bit ridiculous. But, I'm not sure how that relates to his coaching methods. I'm also familiar with a coach's aura quickly falling on deaf ears. See Matt Patricia.
Like I said earlier, with the dolphins, he coached like his press conferences. Oklahoma drills, bull ring drills, ultra physical every day stuff. The players all loved it day 1. They loved it after kicking the shit out of the Titans in game 1. Then they played Tom Brady and got the shit kicked out of them. All of a sudden, nobody liked the super tough practices anymore.
Is there a link to stories about players tuning him out and thinking he was a clown as the season went along? All I've read from Miami players during that run is that they loved playing for him, but those are the only stories local writers are going to put out there.
I'm sure they exist, but the results speak for themselves. They started 2-0, got bitch slapped by Brady 36-7 and were barely competitive the rest of the season going 3-5 the rest of the way with wins against sub .500 Philly and Baltimore, and a week 17 win against the patriots where it was clear the entire time, they were playing not to get anyone hurt.
I'm very aware of what his issues might be. I'm not going into this thing drinking the kool-aid. There's a very real chance that you might end up being correct about who he is as a person/coach and that the Lions have to fire him in 2 years. I do think there's another side, though, and I don't think it's that hard to see how that would work. That said, I think you're putting way too much into a 12-game interim coach stint. He took over a 1-3 team that wasn't competitive and fired its coach. He went 5-7 with some uncompetitive losses with players he had no say in bringing in and a staff he didn't hire, and you're reading into it like his personality was the reason it wasn't better. Just seems kind of odd.
Naw, what I've been saying the entire time is that he is an incredibly risky hire that has a high bust potential. I'm still rooting for the guy because the world needs his kind of entertainment.
I'm sure Brunell knows a great deal about the QB position in the NFL But hiring some radio host to give him his first NFL coaching job seems kinda dumb. And also seems kinda shitty given there's probably plenty of qualified people actually working in the coaching field right now who'd love that job and do it well
I don't know if the hire will work out or not, but it's stupid to suggest he's not qualified to coach quarterbacks at any level. He played the position in the NFL for 19 years. And he's been a HS head coach in FL for the last 8 years, I believe. How is he not qualified?
