You ever had Tlaloc in Athens? That and Sr. Sol are two of my all time favorites. Cali N Tito’s, too. So much awesome food up there.

like I said I don’t go enough to become a regular. I think I can literally remember every time I’ve been to a bar. I think having kids so young made me “miss” out on some things. I don’t regret missing out on them but threads like this one remind of that. By the time my youngest leaves for college I’ll still be young enough to enjoy it.

When Covid hit, Ohio banned dine in eating for a while so the state started allowing restaurants to serve to takeout alcoholic drinks with each carry out order.

My local Mexican place started selling to-go margaritas in 40oz cups.

It depends on the owner and the city, McSorleys in NYC shouldn’t be there but it is and it probably prints money.

My college roommate opened a brewery in the city we live in, so they all know me a bit too well there.

there’s also a decent bourbon bar in town, where a few of the bartenders know me, and what I normally drink.

    adulthood hasn’t been all bad.

About to eat an edible, going to dinner at a place called Pierponts in Union Station in KC. I’ve got my sights set on oysters, steak, and a lobster tail.

Edit: definitely meant to post this in a different thread lol. Oh well.

This whole thread reminds me of when I was in college and working as a car washer at a car dealership
Had heard rumors of this one parts sales guy there that we all knew, that he was an alcoholic and went to the bar every night.
We went to old Joe one time and asked him what bar he went to (cause we kinda wanted to join him) and we were dumb college kids who thought we knew every bar in town
He named some bar name like 'Jessie's bar' on 33rd and oak or some shit we had never heard of.
We asked something like 'is it pretty happening there. Or what. Why do you go there?"

His answer...."it's the closest one to the house"

    Pretty sobering

This is now permanent. Went to one restaurant when everything was closed for dine in. They were selling their beers to go...at cost. Domestics were like $0.75 a bottle and locals were like $1.25. Was pretty sweet

TMB should just buy a bar.

No idea what city would be ideal for that but I've been pitched deals in multiple states that were basically just take over the lease and it's yours.

Had a great one, but it eventually closed. I guess it was fall of 2005 I’d see this run down building at a stoplight near I75 on my way to work. I eventually said, I’ll stop and have one beer and if it’s that bad, I’ll just leave. It was awesome. Afternoon versus the night crowd was definitely different. I’d usually go Saturday and Sunday afternoons and there was a group of regulars that were just fun to talk to. They did have some really good bands on weekend nights too. The food was really good, and the drinks were cheap. Everyone I took there loved it and requested we go there for food when they’d stop by. I finally took my wife there after years of, I think it’s too rough for you. She loved it. There was a biker crowd as part of the regulars. They invited us to a cookout, thinking we wouldn’t show up. We showed up and earned street cred. If I needed a driveway paved, tree cut down, havoc work, etc it’d be done no problem from that group. Eventually we had a kid and while my wife was pregnant, they put together a nice gift for us and food. They were always interested in how we were all doing afterwards and we run into regulars from time to time around town. Unfortunately, the owner was looking to retire and brought in a younger person to take over the bar. It seemed great at first but he became a huge asshole after about 3 months. The liquor license had been changed to his name (twice because he misspelled his own name the first time) and he had a falling out with the original owner. So he told the original owner to leave since he had the license and that was that. All the customers left and it hasn’t been open since. There is a bar most of the regulars go to, but it’s not the same so I haven’t even been for a long time. I still see some of the guys at the store or gas station every now and then. It was a great bar.

Bartended in college at a place that was for real a dive. A few months into my tenure there the owner was finally released from prison. He committed tax fraud. He was one of those conservative types who didn’t think the government deserved all the taxes they were taking so he kept some. Think it was Medicare iirc.

But that’s besides the point. The regulars were the grumpiest meanest old fucks around. They were lawyers, and lobbyists for the most part.

There were 5 members of this elite group, all in their 50s-60s. Every day they’d come in and drink between 5-15 light beers (they all had their own brands of choice). This isn’t an exaggeration btw. Every day. Rain or shine. Monday-Saturday (closed on Sunday’s). Three of the guys would go to the back bar which was only open for special events. They’d smoke cigarettes inside and watch old movies on TCM. They were super racist, but one of them was black, so they were only openly racist about black people when he wasn’t around.

One of them told me that all the good native Americans died fighting the settlers. What’s left are the weakest ones who didn’t want to fight. Truly despicable people. Glad I was exposed to them at a young age.
