Viggo actually breaking his toe kicking the helmet Sauron wrecking shit during the War of the Last Alliance is one of my favorite scenes of the trilogy
My guilty pleasure of the movies is the arrival of the elves, lead by Haldir, at Helm's Deep. I get chills during that scene. The Tolkien purist in me has some self hate for loving that scene. Elves at Helm's Deep was NEVER in the books. It's a total Peter Jackson corruption of the source material. I understand why he did it, because other than the Last Alliance scene, and Legolas/Elrond, the elves aren't really seen contributing to the cause. In truth, there were other battles between the elves of Lothlorien and the orcs of Dol Guldur during the war of the ring in the LOTR books. This isn't covered by the main books though, only the appendices and Unfinished Tales. It's a shame, because seeing Galadriel and Celeborn leading the elves in numbers in forest battles, against Khamul (the second-ranked Nazgul), and armies of orcs, would have been epic.
My chills moment is when the wall is blown and Aragorn and the Elves draw their swords and charge. Also a bastardization of the source material but still gets me.
Finished first part of TT extended, ended when Faramir captured Sam and Frodo. Can't wait to finish tonight.
"One by one, the free lands of Middle-Earth fell to the power of the Ring. But there were some who resisted. A last alliance of Men and Elves marched against the armies of Mordor, and on the slopes of Mount Doom they fought for the freedom of Middle-Earth."
Really hate that these moves came before the whole "split the final book into 2 movies" thing. If there was ever a book trilogy that needed 4 movies its LOTR.
i actually think they did a good job with the split on the LOTR movies. the hobbit movies were abomination. three movies for that single book contributed to how bad they were. to quote bilbo: "stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread."
Yes the Hobbit shouldn't have been 3 movies, but there were other issues as well. Most notably Jackson just said fuck it, I'm going to CGI everything.
He's a Maia (he's above the living), and as the ring's creator has complete power over the ring. Invisibility comes to ones that put on the ring but don't have the power to control it. Plus, that's not his real body. Sauron's physical body was vanquished when Eru (God) destroyed Numenor in the 2nd Age.
You'd think he'd have worn the ring in a safer spot than his hand. Put that sucker on your toe so you'd at least have two hands to retrieve it with if the need arose.
when return came out i went to see it with my sister and a friend of mine. as the theater goes dark my buddy leans over and says "so what's this about?" Me:
It's true that after the downfall of Numenor, Sauron was not able to take his 'fair' form, which he used to deceive both the elves and the men of Numenor. However, it's a common misconception that Sauron had no physical form in the Third Age. He was not, as depicted in Jackson's films, a giant floating eye. The 'eye' of Sauron as it's referred to in the books is a metaphor used by the characters, and I always thought it was a bit ridiculous that the movies took that reading literally. Sauron did indeed have a physical body in the Third Age. He was just never able to return to his 'fair' form after the Second Age.
Fellowship was always my favorite book and I would have ideally liked a slower pacing, especially on the trek from the Shire to Rivendale, bring in the Tom Bombadil storyline and do a little more with the Nazgul pursuits.
I'm not a huge LOTR guy but my favorite part from the movies is the part right before that when Aragorn is yelling at Legolas to take down the thing attempting to blow the wall.
It was just so dramatic and important for him to make that shot. It just added to the drama of an already badass battle scene.
The design of the elven armor is just exquisite. Their arrival to Helm's Deep is one of my favorite moments of the trilogy even though like previously said creative license was taken. I remember being blown away watching the helms deep sequence in theaters. Just stunning.
"What's happening out there?" "Shall I describe it to you, or would you like me to find you a box?" GOAT
The amazing thing about Tolkien is that the War of the Ring isn't necessarily most epic story in his Universe. And he didn't even get around to writing the Battle of Battles when Morgoth breaks out from the void and returns to wage war only to have Turin slay him for good. He only wrote the prophecy about it.
The 3rd movie was super long and should've been two. Also would've been cool to see Glorfindel. I mean that fucker fought a Balrog.
This thread and re-reading The Hobbit to my kids got me motivated to read The Silmarillian. Just downloaded.
What's this thread's opinion on The Hobbit movies? I was very underwhelmed by the first two and never bothered with the third one.
I liked them but I think that's because I was just so happy to have more LOTR related material to watch. That said the gopro barrel footage from TDOS still makes me cringe.
i thought the Glorfindel that fought the Balrog was a diff Glorfindel from the lotr books didn't Glorfindel die killing the Balrog chief?
Thread inspired me to start reading The Hobbit to my kids last night. The dwarves haven't even left Bilbo's pad and the kids are fighting over who the best dwarf is
