I remember when I worked at a sandwich shop in college. I would occasionally have to sweep the parking lot and no exaggeration 80% of the trash on the ground was cigarette butts. The number of people that smoke that just chuck their cigs afterward is insane and and gives me a giant impression of smoker/trashy correlation.

That’s because the Chinese kids who come to the US for college are from extremely wealthy families in China. It’s the top 1% of 1%. No kids from the rice paddies are coming to the US for school
Yep, that’s what I figured out as well. Big schools like UofSC are looking to them to fill sizable chunks of the budget. We actually pay a third party company to deliver quotas of international undergrads
Don’t know if UM pays a third party but we get the same kids. All with the same MO. Rich, barely speak a word of English, family well connected with the govt, and cheaters. They were allowed translation books for tests and they would just type up their notes and stick them in the guide. Can’t prove it’s cheating unless you can read Chinese so it went completely unchecked.
Yep, academic integrity is a big issue here too. Charitably, I think some of it has to do with the difference in our ed systems. But yeah some of them are just knowingly taking advantage
When I was in school at IU, my parents started taking on foreign exchange students at the local community college. We had a Chinese student once and he asked me if I could take him to the mall so he could get a cell phone plan. When we got to the store he pulled out so much money out of his jacket it started making me sweat. Drug dealer sized stacks of $20s. He moved out a month or to later and purchased a brand new Escalade. He also took a cab from Chicago to South Bend when he got into the country.
Saudi kids on campus rich af too. Many come on some kind of royal/govt scholarship that pays for everything. They’ll get one bmw and rag it out and leave it behind when they go home for the next kid to drive. Cig smoking like wild
Parents had a few of these stay with them, too. One would smoke cigarettes inside the house in the basement and flush the butts down the toilet because he didn’t want to go outside.
I don't smoke or use any tobacco of any kind, also I find the smell of stale cigarette smoke particularly awful, but I do like the smell of "fresh" secondhand smoke. My dad smoked a lot growing up and I guess that's where I get it. I also like the smell of someone smoking a pipe. Pretty sure this is trashy

When I see the foreign kids on campus huddling together smoking in front of the no smoking sign, at first I think "these kids are knuckleheads." Then I remember how me and my American friends acted when we studied abroad
We had a Saudi prince in our class at UM. He was actually really cool. First thing he did when he got to his dorm was tell his roommate that his new best friend at college wasn’t going to walk around looking like a commoner. So they went to his tailor and got him like 20k worth of custom made clothes. had another that wore a 30k watch for his “walking around” watch. He recently got married and from the pictures, this wedding would have made the royal family jealous. Easily a 2 million dollar wedding.
UO built separate housing specifically for international students at the tail end of my time there that was insanely nice compared to the shitty regular dorms
