If someone had no previous exposure to the MCU, and you only got 5 movies to build up the universe as but also as a lead in to IW, which would you pick? I guess my first pass at it would be: Iron Man 1 Captain America 1 Avengers 1 Guardians of the Galaxy Civil War
Maybe it's nostalgia but I think Iron Man was the perfect kickstart to everything and sets you up perfectly. But yeah beyond that there's little that would directly tie into IW beyond a better understanding of Stark's overall story arc
I think Winter Soldier is one of the best movies in the series but is there anything critical in it to IW or the larger part of the universe that isn't covered in the other movies? And I say that knowing the same could be asked of Iron Man
Stark is a nobody now that we have Shuri. He’s not even the best Stark (see: CA: TFA) Steve Rogers’ death will be the cheapened one if you dont see CA: TFA
only five? Can't be done. Iron Man Cap 1 Avengers Cap Winter Solider Cap Civil War GOTG 1 Thor Ragnarok
You need to see Winter Solider because (A) without it, half of Civil War makes little sense, and (B) it's the best movie in the whole franchise. You need to see Thor Ragnarok because it...uh...well how else will you understand why Thor looks so different from Avengers? (you're right about that one)
The original question is what 5 films are must needs to prime for infinity war. And IW is about 1 thing, Thanos collecting the infinity stones to become the destroyer of worlds to appease the goddess death. In knowing THAT, and knowing Hela will be the MCU portrayal of death, if limited to 5 you have to choose: Avengers GotG AoU Civil War Ragnarok
It’s really hard to leave off DS with the time stone being in there and how important the DS vs the ebony maw will be.
Its pretty cool seeing how the Marvel movies really transcends different age groups. Was at my golf lesson today and a late 20's instructor was chatting with his 50 yo student about the Star Lord scene where he tells IM his plan is bad in the new trailer.
I think it’s impossible to do just 5 movies. So much back story in certain movies that will contribute to how infinity war will play out. Also, you have to do every movie that has an infinity stone tied to it.
FWIW, we don't actually know that yet. There's a real possibility they do something with Hela(maybe casting down Ragnarok upon her banished her to some underworld, thus becoming Death...or something), but right now, there's been no indication they're going to follow the comics' motivation for Thanos. That's a big arc to cover in the first part of IW, and I just don't think it's going to happen. So, other than Thor's current appearance, that makes Ragnarok unncessary(but still in the running for the best of the MCU). And unless there's a serious curveball, I think we're being setup for Falcon to take the shield. Bucky may even be the one that hands it to him. And I actually think DS has to be included. He's the only one that's not featured in one of the other teamup movies(unless you're including Ragnarok, and his part in that doesn't do his power justice). I'd keep your list, and sub Strange out for Ragnarok.
Feels like it’d be easier to just cut out half of the MCU for prerequisite viewing. Here’s what I’d do: Iron Man (pivotal character to most other story arcs and likely to have an impactful death) Captain America: TFA (first infinity stone and another pivotal character likely to have an impactful death) The Avengers (can use this as intro to Thor, Loki, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow; introduces Thanos and more story regarding the Space Stone and intro of the Mind Stone) Captain America: TWS (introduces Bucky as a future anti-hero and is a top 3 film) GotG v1 (intro to the Power Stone and cosmic entities; gives Thanos a little backstory) Avengers: AoU (sets up Civil War, intros Scarlet Witch and Vision by implanting the Mind Stone and setting up the death we’ve known about the longest) Civil War (intro to Black Panther and Spidey and can use as intro for Ant-Man, Falcon, and War Machine) Doctor Strange (intro to Time Stone and brings magic into the MCU) Thor: Ragnarok (brings Hulk back and sets up likely one of the first scenes in IW) Black Panther (IW uses Wakanda as a major backdrop plus Shuri is coming in to be the new tech person; intro to Kendrick Lamar for white people) Skip: The Incredible Hulk Iron Man 2 Thor Iron Man 3 Thor: TDW (but briefly explain the Reality Stone was used to contractually obligate Natalie Portman to a terrible performance) Ant-Man GotG v2 Spider-Man: Homecoming
Agree with 90% of this list. Only thing I would change is I think Thor 1 is more important to understanding the overall picture of the MCU than Dr. Strange. You can watch Dr. Strange and still have no clue what the fuck is really happening there, so it's probably not that different from just getting the bullet points from the internet.
i have only seen 5ish movies of the entire 18 so JeremyLambsFace and i are starting a rewatch in preparation of the new movie coming out. renting a few, he owns a few and the rest are on netflix/fx on demand starting with captain america first avenger
