I've said this several times before, but the problem for me with the movie was the build up. They sold the movie as this amazing female empowerment story. What they made was a story where anyone could have been Carol Danvers, and this one just happened to be a woman. Which is fine and once I stopped looking for the story they sold on the press tour I found it be to entertaining and thought the character was fine. From a development standpoint, I agree that it's like they decided they didn't have enough time and had to choose whether to show the story of Carol Danvers or Captain Marvel, so they chose Captain Marvel and just sprinkled in these little clips of of her past that Carol herself doesn't even remember. The lesson she learned in the movie wasn't anything about herself. It was essential,ly "I actually have a lot more super powers than I thought and I bet it would be fun if I used them!"
I’m so fucked up the first thing I thought of with “female Deadpool” is that she’d have painful sex her whole life with her hymen regenerating every time.
Thoughts on Scorsese saying Marvel movies aren't cinema? I like Scorsese movies and James Cameron movies but something rubs me the wrong way by how butthurt these guys get about the success of Marvel movies.
couldn't care less what scorcese says about the marvel movies. i find them incredibly enjoyable and i like to think that's part of the point of movies - to entertain.
it's not like popcorn/action flicks and movie franchises are a new phenomenon. Marvel just found a way to do it better than everyone else.
I mean it takes some talent to make 23 fucking franchise films and keep people interested. What they're doing is pretty unprecedented.
The rat at the end of the departed, along with the over the topness in Wolf of Wall Street eliminates Scorsese in ever commenting on such matters.
not sure where to post this, but it doesn't look like Disney+ is going to have an app for Samsung TVs and that's a problem for me.
Yep. My Sammy is 7 years old and HBOGO just dropped off. All that’s left is Netflix and Prime and I’m sure they’re gonna fall off eventually. Hate getting a TV before one dies but it’s gonna come down to it.
I don't really understand why some people (not you, but his comments have gotten a lot of play all over the place) get worked up about comments like these. Scorsese doesn't like Marvel movies. I do. I'm okay with that.
he didn't say he didn't like them though. he said they're not cinema. big distinction for me when someone goes that far to try to discredit someone else's work.
I don't really know what "they're not cinema, they're more like amusement parks" really means, though. To me, that just means it's a genre of movie he doesn't enjoy. I get that there's probably more of a dig there by putting like he did, but I just don't think it's a big controversy.
I can see why someone like James Cameron might be bitter, since he got supplanted from both the number one and number two spots recently and sees Marvel movies as the new event film that he's not involved in. Marty has never been a big blockbuster director, so what does he care which popcorn movie is on top? Maybe he's just bitter that he couldn't get a studio to finance the Irishman for 200mm or whatever it cost. He's still one of the best to ever do it. Comparing his movies with MCU films is apples and oranges.
Added Avengers:EMH. Fuck yes But this guy gets “it” Used to be on amazon prime video but they’ve completely scrubbed it from everywhere as far as I can tell.
It's not a big controversy because like you said everyone is entitled to their opinion but when someone that revered in their field says something people listen. Its like Oscar Robertson talking shit about Steph Curry. Comes off as extremely petty for no reason. He also said he wants less of them made and that they don't convey "emotional human experiences" after admitting he's never seen a single one. I would understand if he said something along the lines of we need more diverse types of genres and not a million superhero movies. But saying this particular genre that I don't like and have never seen isn't cinema makes it seem like you're sniffing your own farts.
hot take, but making a living off mobster movies is exactly the same as making a living off superhero movies if not worse. I realize that’s not all he’s done, but his movies have done a lot of work to glorify scumbag lifestyles
This. Scorsese can fuck right off. Not every superhero movie is some deep exploration into complex human emotions and relationships. But neither is every non superhero movie. The best ones are. I remember a quote from the Battlestar Galactica DVD special features that went something like sci-fi is not much more than a setting. That show was an exploration of human nature, war, and more that just so happened to be in fucking space. Same goes for the best super hero films. Christ, just trace back the origins of comics, the stories, and the creators to get a sense of what they set out to accomplish
Watched FFH on the plane to California yesterday. Peter Tingle cracked me up so much again. Got to the hotel and AoU was on the part where they’re trying to lift the hammer. Thor’s face when Cap moves it is one of the best scenes in the Marvel universe for me.
The exploration behind the psyche of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers from their debut to their 180 turn that resulted in Civil War and the finality of their arc in End Game is better than just about any film/media in the last 10-20 years. If someone can't appreciate that form of story telling just because big budgets and green screen and explosions are involved then they're probably just miserable cunts.
