Spoiler Everyone kept saying "He" even Yelena with TM, and it certainly gave off the illusion he's a dude but it was a nice twist.. plus if she hits that hard out of the suit I'd be surprised. First appearance suits are never top tier in MCU in my opinion, so when Olga does come back I bet they have something more fitting and she'll be very agile in it (though the character already is). We're definitely going to need those Earth villains who are tactical and elite at fighting when the "Big ones" are fighting demons, gods, etc. TM is a great villain for MCU like F&WS and Hawkeye series
This may be a dumb question, but if I order on Disney+, does that count towards its box office total?
MSU counted people watching at home on TV as being in the stands the last few years. Hell yeah, sellout streak baby.
Spoiler Thought it was really good, and at times great. Writing and direction were great, set pieces, especially in the first two acts were excellent. Third act got a little too fantastical, which is fine in a comic book movie, I know, but everything before this was so grounded it seemed a bit too much of a reach to get from motorcycle chases down the streets of Budapest to a flying city in the clouds controlled by Russian Harvey Weinstein and his magic ring. Pugh was amazing. Watching it was an odd experience. I basically just told myself I was watching a movie that came out after Civil War that I had somehow forgotten to check out when it released. My biggest problem with the movie is barely a problem at all: The main character doesn't really go on a character-developing journey. There's not a "(1) I want, (2) I get, (3) it's not what I thought, (4) I learn, (5) I grow, (6) I get what I needed, (7) I'm changed" journey that these sort of solo movies often have. Nat doesn't really learn or grow. She gets closure with her surrogate family, sure, but that wasn't something she needed or wanted when the movie began. She just sort of stumbled into it along the way. But that's a minor gripe. If anything the movie's real purpose was to bring Yelena into the MCU and set her up (eventually) as a replacement for Nat. First she'll be an antagonist, and I can't wait to see her pop up again, presumably in Hawkeye.
Spoiler It's hard for me to remember another MCU actor with this high of a batting average in terms of their lines landing like Pugh's do in this movie unless you're talking bit characters like Korg or something in Ragnarok. So many little bits and one-liners in the movie that she just smashed. The vest bit. The "cool way to die" bit. Making fun of BW for posing. The "I don't get my period, dipshit. I don't have a uterus" line and the stuff after that was delivered so well. Not sure how long this will be up on YT, but I enjoyed it.
Spoiler The delivery and sequence of this also got me... "I don't think we have enough fuel for St. Petersburg." "No, we're good. We'll make it." "Okay" (Helicopter crashes as it's out of fuel)
some nerds I watch videos of on YouTube are speculating that something happens in Loki or DS2 that fucks up the multiverse and the stories in What If are the result of that, but for the most part - stand-alone.
Spoiler her best “line” was getting into the chopper and going “hungh” while getting in. Immediately after “it’s dry….really dry”. So good.
Spoiler Pugh continues to be a star. She is magnetic and Yalena carried the film. Can’t wait to see how they integrate her going forward.
But at $30? The 7 year old and I spent more than that at a Sunday matinee plus Popcorn/Icee combo. It may be 15 years away but eventually there will be another Endgame-like event. I don’t see billion+ dollar opening weekends being available on my couch for $30.
That movie will skyrocket up everyone’s rankings on rewatches. So many great one liners. The dinning room table scene was one of my all time marvel favs. So many little ‘side eyes’ ‘shoulder shrugs’ ‘eyebrow raises’ ‘scoffs’ that were perfect. Yelena being a perfect assassin with cirque du soleil level skills but also old man grunting anytime she had to bend over was incredible.
Yea but do the studios get a cut of concessions? Plus, I'm guessing Disney could potentially make more as they wouldn't have to give a cut to the theaters? With a 1 year old, I prefer having the Disney+ premier option vs trying to hit the theaters for all the releases.
liked it, didn't love it. but was happy to see a movie in the theaters again, and glad it seems to be a box office success.
How reliable is the reporting about the Disney+ exclusive stuff? Because $60M over one weekend for this seems kind of crazy to me. Is that just Disney saying it and we all take them at their word?
Definitely a solid movie. Not earth shattering because of the stakes and lack of progress but a fun movie for sure.
Studios get nothing from concession. That's all house money, which is why they jack the prices up to stupid amounts. They only get a % of the movie's revenue but reap all the money from popcorn and candy, etc
Thought that it was a fun, solid movie…but definitely not a top-tier MCU film. It would have been awesome had it been released at its spot on the timeline (and would have created a lot more empathy for Nat’s death). Like I said, I still enjoyed it though. Pugh was outstanding. Louis-Dreyfus killed me in the post-credit.
Yes, I thought it was kind of boring overall, and lacked any real believable threat that made me feel like there was significant purpose for a Marvel movie. I am only a movie fan and have never read the comics, so I am not colored by fanboy appreciation. It's just a movie for me and from that angle I would say 6.5 out of 10.
Yeah like it would have been way more interesting to learn that this guy had control of Thunderbolt Ross and some other key players would have also retroactively explained why Ross’ tone is all over the place in the MCU
I get what you're saying, and that's kind of the problem with the MCU in general as it goes forward after the stakes of IW and EG. I think the way people go into this movie is going to affect what they think of it after the fact. If you went into it expecting an MCU movie that moves the MCU along and has stakes similar to what these movies have for the last 4-5 years, you'll probably be disappointed and won't be able to get over the fact this movie should have come out 5 years ago. If you're just looking to watch an action movie with a story that's more "personal to the main character" than "the world is going to end if the main character doesn't save it," I think you'll be much more likely to enjoy it. I said it over the weekend, but I think this is similar to Rogue One or Solo. Those are considered "Star Wars Stories" more than official Star Wars saga movies. BW is a MCU story more than an MCU saga movie.
I had no expectations, but if I was to lean towards one it would have been the one you said that I would be much more likely to enjoy. I was also going to make the Rogue One comparison, because it is fairly obvious. I just don't think this was executed as well. To the point that a lot of people have made it was a very weak villain (movie only) and I typically superhero movies have an imminent and somewhat believable threat. They didn't do a great job of making you believe it in this movie and that had nothing to do with us knowing what was to come in the MCU from the other movies. I think the other thing is that once we knew of the existence of the pheromone antidote it was fairly obvious to see how the conflict would be resolved.
It was a very obvious plot. The CGI was bad at times. I thought Weitz was fairly stale and boring. That being said, Pugh and Harbor were fantastic and the fight scenes were badass. I went into this with fairly low expectations and came away really enjoying it. Black Widow the character deserved that movie and they did a fantastic job of introducing a new major player. (Yelena)
This is kind of what I'm saying, though. The MCU has set up, for better or worse, the idea of "this is what a superhero movie is". Not every time, but there's a formula that people expect for a superhero movie. This movie isn't about a villain who is trying to rule the world. It's about a villain who has haunted the main character for her entire life, and in this movie she faces it. The stakes outside of Natasha's world aren't great, but that's not what the story is about. It's fine if people don't like it or thought it should have been better or whatever. I thought the third act was weak, personally. But I don't think the problem was the story they were trying to tell.
The third act had to be stronger, to your point. It was comically weak and bad. This guy who has haunted her her entire life was not even a challenge in the end. If you are going to stage the movie based on the tropes associated with Super Hero movies you can't have a weak villain (who haunted her whole life). They set the standard and followed the formula, but their execution was poor.
Ross has been very underwhelming thus far. But I guess juggling that many people and baddies isnt easy.
