Because why would he leave Louisville after one year for Arkansas or Ole Miss?

He was so chooses in pursuing jobs before, I would be stunned if he left Louisville in the next five years.

I think I must have a lower opinion of UL than a lot of people on this board because someone said something similar a couple weeks ago.

I think OM or Arkansas is a definite step up in terms of prestige, money, and opportunity from a school like Louisville but I’m open to hearing otherwise.

Yep. He's got a much easier life where he is trying to get Louisville to the top level, than having to do it in a division with LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and TAMU.

What opportunity exists at Ole Miss and Arkansas? I don't know what he's making at Louisville, but he has a much better chance for success there than in the SEC West.

It's pretty simple. Without even ranking MSU, Arkansas, or OM, if you take one of those jobs, you are taking what is at best the 5th best job in a 7 team division. You can be successful at one of those places, but it's going to take a lot, including luck. Meanwhile, he's at a place where even though he's in the tougher division, he has the resources to compete with all but maybe 2-3 teams in the league.

Ole Miss and Arkansas both just fired guys after two years. That doesn’t exactly fill people with the warm and fuzzies. I also can’t imagine any coach is thrilled with annual games against LSU, Auburn and Bama. Frankly, Missouri is probably the most attractive of the three SEC openings.

Your rivals guy probably got the Healy info from our rivals guy, who has said the same. That's disappointing because I like Healy a lot, but insisting on bringing his entire staff is a bit of a red flag.

For what it's worth, Luke never should have been hired in the first place. He was not the plan to follow Freeze and only got the job as a result of winning the Egg Bowl as the interim and players loving him. Certain factions of our fan base wanted an "Ole Miss guy" and pushed him through. The hire was immediately unpopular for the vast majority of our fans, and attendance, fund raising, and ticket sales reflected that.

I didn’t wake up today thinking I’d be dying on the OM > Louisville hill but here we are. Couple points in favor of OM/Ark:

    1) SEC West is the best division in college football. If you’re wired like most of these guys you want to keep moving up and challenging yourself in the best possible environment.

    2) the SEC has way more money than the acc by the nature of their tv deals.

    3) moderate (10-2) success in the SEC = NY6 bowls and prime time coverage. 10-2 at Louisville gets you the belk bowl.

    4) despite the current relative standing of both Ark and OM, each has had periods of success in the last ten years (Petrino/mallet sugar bowl, high freeze era at OM).

    Whatever just some thoughts.

I haven't participated in this thread but just a few thoughts here:

    1) It's a lot easier to move up when you aren't getting destroyed by Bama/Auburn/LSU every year.
    2) While this may be true, Louisville has plenty of cash due to being the only game in town and aren't going to be outbid by an Ole Miss unless they are ready to get rid of their coach.
    3) Louisville went to the Sugar Bowl in 2012 (I think?) at 10-2. I see no reason why they couldn't again. Shit, an 8-4 UVA is about to go to the Orange Bowl.
    4) See #3

If you're good at Louisville, you can get a job like Texas (see Charlie Strong). Why settle for an Ole Miss (no offense to our OM posters, I know my team's place too).

    1) I don't think most coaches are actively looking for scenarios where it has to play in a division like that. If they were, the candidate pool for these jobs would be better than it is.

    2) True, but are those SEC schools going to spend the kind of money that blows a school like Louisville out of the water on Scott Satterfield? Satterfield is currently making $3.25M at Louisville.

    3) 10-2 at Arkansas and/or Ole Miss isn't "moderate success". In the current CFB landscape, it's a pretty damn close to a miracle.

    4) Hugh Freeze's best ever regular season was 9-3. Petrino did better than that, but an Arkansas team has lost 3 or fewer games 3 times since 1990.

We're not looking at Satterfield so this is all moot, but we were paying Freeze $4.5mm.

    UPDATE:

Here's what I can tell you: The pressure on Carter to seriously consider Kiffin is immense. He has felt it. It's real. I do anticipate, as of this moment, assuming Ole Miss can't get Norvell, it will listen to Kiffin in person.

Others are telling me things are moving quickly with Kiffin. I'm not exactly sure what that means.

People talk in code and in proverbial whispers during these things. A lot is left open for interpretation.

If Ole Miss is your destination job, then sure it makes sense because OM can pay well, you're in a great college town, and you'll have good job security if you can win your non-conference games and go around .500 in league play most years.

But, if you're trying to move up to get an elite job, its going to be easier to do that at Louisville because you're not starting most seasons with 3-4 guaranteed losses before you even take a snap.

To be fair I am always skeptical of the numbers reported for coaching compensation. For a long time Roy Willians was 15-20 on those lists for CBB but I guarantee you there were some supplementary income streams boosting him up.
