No one is saying he's an elite coach. His record certainly doesn't indicate that there's 65 better in the country year in and year out though.

I didn't realize everyone would get so wound up about it, so I will say shitty is the wrong word choice and he's an average to above coach. He doesn't give a shit about defense and he's incapable of making adjustments and he's a weird dickhead which is why he doesn't get better talent or coach at better schools. Will always respect the hell out of him. True offensive innovator. One of the things that draws me to football is the importance of playcalling and strategy. No other sport is so reliant on coaches. The ones who can create programs from nothing by winning for a few years with less talent, by virtue of strategy, are the great ones. This could be more a condemnation of Nebraska at the time, but this dude commonly made it look like two teams playing different sports. Ahead of his time, and unapologetic when criticized for it.

He had one season in 10 at Tech with a losing record in conference (his first season). They have had six consecutive losing records in the conference in the six years since he was let go. He had had winning records in conference the last 9 seasons he was there.
If I were a Texas fan, I would welcome him with open arms compared to the product Charlie Strong puts on the field each week
