Are you aware of the track record of previous Bama oc's who looked great with more talent than the opponent?
Maryland has done what exactly besides the Fridge tenure? Those dildos thought they could do better than the Fridge.
who is in the same division as OSU, PSU, UM, and MSU. this is a bad hire and will do nothing to push them ahead of where they currently are, this is a fan service hire and they'll be doing this all over again in about 4 years.
Because they just fired a coach that was directly liable for the death of a player. Now isn’t the best time to hire a coach with a history of assaulting other coaches and sexual harassment allegations. A coach that is 2-26 at that
I can’t wait for this emporer’s new clothes phenomenon to run its course and the media acknowledge how dumb this was.
Outside of John Calipari, when has "He's a good recruiter" ever worked out as a HC hire? If that's what you lead with, it's probably not going to work.
I mean, people give Cal shit and the program has struggled the past couple years. But he has two final fours, a runner up and a championship in 9 years. I get that that's the expectation at Kentucky but it's hard to say it was a bad hire in the grand scheme of things.
He’s obviously proven himself as a head coach now (fake punt notwithstanding), but at the time of his hiring he’d been a successful Saban coordinator who recruited well.
Be interesting to see if he's learned anything since New Mexico. That's a nearly impossible job, but he was terrible on top of the difficulties. He's going to kill it in recruiting in that area though.
VT doesn’t really depend on dc md va, they’re more Richmond / 757 and North Carolina based. potentially Bama. They’ve cleaned up Baltimore over the last couple years.
He took over New Mexico at its peak. Rocky Long left the program in pretty decent shape. Locksley destroyed it in short order.
Going to go on record and say I think Locksley will be relatively successful at Maryland. Lots of talent in that area if you can keep them at home. Hell, DeMatha puts out 10 D1 guys a year by itself.
Yeah, but Long left after going 4-8, and I remember in his press conference him basically saying as it was that New Mexico was basically an impossible place to win, because he had struggled, and he was a good coach. Locksley was awful at New Mexico though, no doubt about it--on and off the field. It's possible that he's become a better coach from learning some things from being around Saban, I don't know. Might be worth the chance for Maryland because he will make the roster much much better. I would just have him on a short leash if he starts behaving like he did at UNM.
It will hurt a bit but we have pivoted away from Maryland to Virginia in recent years. We are still good for 1-2 guys a year from MD but we are more likely to lose the MD kids to Bama or FSU than MD. Locksley will definitely make it harder that’s for sure but nothing too drastic imo. Franklin has finally started to go a bit national and we are starting to get some decent kids from FL and other places as well. VT, Miami and others continuing to suck will help.
Long's lowest win total season in his 10 seasons at UNM was 4 wins in his first and last seasons. Double the wins Locksley had combined in his 2.5 seasons. That's a special level of terrible Locksley brought to UNM.
There will always be a kid or two every year or so that simply will want to stay home. Like Stefon Diggs did. Kids who don’t care about big bowls games etc. Like some Pittsburgh city kids did with Pitt in years past. But until Locksley shows he can get past 4th place in the east the top kids in the DMV will go elsewhere. I’m sure he will fight like hell to get Bresee to give MD a serious look.
I don't understand the "New Mexico is a difficult job" narrative. It isn't an easy job but I don't think it has any exceptional challenges that other middling G5 programs don't face. Obviously not a ton of in state talent but Texas and California are close enough. Rocky Long went to 5 bowl games in 11 seasons. Firing Rocky Long was pretty dumb.
I don't think Locksley is a great hire, and there's some troubling stuff from his only previous HC run. At the same time, I don't think his failure at New Mexico has anything to do with how he'll do at Maryland. New Mexico was a stupid job for Locksley. It makes no sense that program hired him. Maryland is probably the best case scenario for him. I don't know what success for him at Maryland would look like, but there probably aren't many programs in the country where he's better suited to coach at this point.
If Locksley takes DL Coach Larry Johnson from Ohio State, that hurts us because of the coach more than DC Metro recruiting. We have three starters from DC Metro, but Dwayne Haskins was camping at OSU since he was 8 and Tressel coached. Isiah Prince (RT) has been okay. Chase Young (DE) could be a top 10 overall pick in 2020. Young and a 2019 three star DB Shaw are the only DC Metro recruits in our last three classes.
since he wouldn't be able to recruit and 4 out of 12 games went without an offensive touchdown, which is bad considering he is an offensive coach.
Long is the one that said it about the problems inherent with the job--mainly support and facilities I believe, not me.
