A lot of mocks have us taking a HS outfielder Kyle 12:13 You, Klaw, BA, and MLB.com have all had the Brewers taking Adell or Beck in the latest mock or in recent mocks. Is it known the Brewers are targeting high-ceiling prep OF or is this just how the board is likely to fall for them? Eric A Longenhagen 12:14 Have heard them on OFs, unsure who they prefer. Adell has some teams that love him and others who don' t have him in their top 30. Wish there was SP there on the board but I know it doesn't make sense to reach for positions in the draft.
This organization keeps drafting OFs in the first round every year. I am completely against it unless the guy is a sure thing power hitter and these two kids are more athletes than pure hitters from what I have read. I will try not to complain too much when we pick one of these guys but I am definitely not going to be happy about it.
Watch out for this North Carolina RHP J.B.Bukauskus if he slips to our pick. He is a short RHP like Sonny Gray and I think Montgomery drafted him out of high school when he was with Arizona.
This would completely infuriate me. Montgomery has had two potentially great drafts in a row and now this. I know that he got a promotion but our best scout needs to be the main guy handling the draft.
Did we really just pick a guy with no position who can't throw. Why does this team torture me every single draft.
Wonder how the slot $ plays out. Lutz and Lemons are thought of as no guarantee to sign. Wonder if they are getting a discount at 9.
The Brewers don't draft guys they deem unsignable so it will probably not be an issue. They probably got a discount on Hiura since he has no position and may need Tommy John surgery. The guy does appear to be a great hitter and could be a solid pick if he can play second base.
Corbin Burnes our fourth round pick in last years draft continues to dominate. We definitely have a ton of pitching depth in our system for probably the first time in team history.
Woodruff was scratched from Game 1 of the doubleheader because he injured his hamstring. Instead we get the pleasure of watching Brent Suter and his 85 mph fastball. I think I might just skip this one.
Looks like we are back to sucking again. I didn't expect much this year but the division being so bad really opened things up. Too bad we just aren't good enough to take advantage of it.
On day three they took like 9 straight high school players with good scholarship offers. Looks like they are shooting for upside over quantity. Will be interesting to see what they do with the money.
We can't continue to use Knebel as often as we have. Counsell needs to start trusting Hader in some big situations and can't keep going back to Knebel and Barnes every night. Its also time to give Wei Chung Wang another shot.
Ronnie: The Brewers remain in first place despite an MLB worst 18 relief losses. Despite likely being incredibly lucky so far this year have they still underperformed their optimum luck to an extent? Is that even a thing? 10:30 Jeff Sullivan: Their bullpen, by WPA, has been basically average. They lead the majors in “meltdowns” but they also lead the majors in “shutdowns”. So! I’d say their record makes sense. Bullpen losses aren’t all just bad luck
I have a feeling Jeffress will be back in the next month or so. For some reason he only seems to pitch well for the Brewers. Peralta for Jeffress would be a good trade for both teams.
Draft signing tracker. https://www.brewcrewball.com/2017/6/12/15781040/milwaukee-brewers-2017-mlb-draft-and-signing-tracker Already see a couple guys going above and below slot. 5th round HS 3b got the same money as our 4th rounder and $150k over slot. Will be keeping an eye on what happens with the players round 10-19. A bunch of HS players with good scholarship offers similar to McClanahan last year. The second round pick Lemons that signed was no sure thing so that is good.
They saved some money by signing the 9th round pick for 10k. This new scouting director clearly did not rely too heavily on analytics with the majority of these picks. Hiura was definitely a guy that has to be loved by stats guys but we picked way more high school players than usual which was a real shocker for me.
Unless Hiura signs way under his alloted bonus we probably won't have enough to sign most of the later round high school guys.
https://www.milb.com/sky-sox/news/a...n-in-colorado-springs/c-237820390/t-196093366 I think this means that the Brewers will be getting a new AAA affiliate but that one of their two rookie league teams will now move from Montana to Colorado Springs. Next season will be our last in Colorado Springs for AAA thankfully.
Having already paid several picks over slot I don't see much flexibility left for our later round picks. Hopefully we can sign a few of them but it's not going to be easy.
This coaching staff at our high A affiliate must be awful. Last year the team in Brevard lost around 100 games and this years team in Carolina which is loaded with many of our top prospects has a decent record but the top guys are all having terrible seasons besides Jake Gatewood who is having a great season. Isan Diaz in particular has been just terrible the last 6 weeks or so.
Is that a pitching friendly league in general? They have promoted two pitchers up from Carolina to Biloxi while nobody on that team has an OPS above the low 700s. (Which is true across all our minor league affiliates other than Colorado)
I am not sure if that league is skewed either way. The FSL where we had our Brevard team was known as a bad league for offense but I don't know about this league. I just know that all of our prospects on that team have had bad seasons other than Gatewood who has been tremendous.
I never liked Trent Clark and I think my feelings on Corey Ray have been well established but it is really disappointing to see Erceg and Diaz struggling so much. I think they will both turn things around but Diaz in particular has hit a wall the last 6 weeks or so.
