Jesus Aguilar. That's in 280 PAs, only hit hit his 1st HR on April 21st or somewhere around there. 12th HR (Including both today) on 2-strike counts. The most Aguilar thing this season was a 13 pitch at bat that resulted in a walkoff HR. That man is quite something.
I don't want Machado unless we can get him for something similar to what Arizona paid to get JD Martinez last year. I hate the thought of giving up a lot for a rental. This isn't 2008 where we were desperate to make the playoffs. I would be willing to give something like Ortiz and Ray and even that is too much. I don't see Machado helping us that much when he is the worst defensive shortstop in baseball. If any of Hiura, Peralta, or Burnes is in this deal I will flip out.
Include as many as they want of: Arcia, Santana, Phillips Include one of: Lutz, Ray, Grisham Include one of: Diplan, Houser, Ponce Make it happen
Totally disagree about Arcia being in a deal for a rental. Take Lutz out of the second group and Diplan out of the third. Arcia is still the shortstop of the future. Throw this year out completely and realize he is great defensively and his bat was more than acceptable last year. No reason to give up 4 or 5 years of that for three months of Machado. I just hate the thought of giving away a good package for any rental. Two out of Santana, Phillips, and Ray and their choice of Ortiz, Houser, and Ponce is as far as I would go. Why the desperation at this point in time. We are positioned to be even better next year with a healthy Nelson and Burnes ready for the rotation. This team even being involved in these talks just reeks of interference from Attanasio again.
The #Orioles want #Brewers top pitching prospect Corbin Burnes. The Brewers are willing to give the Orioles Brett Phillips and Luis Ortiz in a potential Manny Machado deal. (@Ken_Rosenthal)
Really let Houser wear that one to rest the bullpen tonight. Last night was a horrible night to go 12 innings on the back of a short start. They have 5 games in 4 days starting tonight. Their last off day was like the 26th.
This is exactly why I don't want to make any big trades. We just aren't good enough yet. The rotation doesn't pitch nearly enough innings and the lineup is terrible.
It's time for this organization to give Woodruff a real shot at sticking in the rotation. There is no reason whatsoever why we chose guys like Miley and Suter over Woodruff. We finally have guys with plus stuff yet we go with mediocre or worse options instead.
It's time for some minor league updates with the major league team playing so poorly. Hiura who was slumping the past two weeks or so went 4-4 with a HR tonight. Tristen Lutz hit a HR and has been playing well lately.
I really hope this isn't a repeat of last year where we fell apart in the second half. Hopefully we can win a couple before the break and regroup. I think it's about time we go with our best pitchers out of the break which means Woodruff in the rotation and Miley released.
I don't know if you are being serious or not but there is nothing to love about this Brewers team other than the bullpen which will probably fall apart in the second half due to pitching 4 or more innings nearly every night. The offense is absolute trash and has been as long as Darnell Coles has been the hitting coach. We added Cain and Yelich and the offense is barely better than last years total suck fest. We will probably be in the hunt for a wild card spot but I want more and don't think this team is nearly where it needs to be. I just hope we don't panic and make a big deadline deal when this team is clearly not ready to win yet. Next season the rotation can be much better with Nelson and our young guys and Hiura should be ready to take over second base. Sorry for the long rant but this is the only team I really care about and they frustrate the hell out of me.
Counterpoint: The NL is down this year, and since the Brewers' two best qualities (bullpen and defense) don't tend to be long term pillars for contending teams, this is the time for the Brewers to take their shot because this might be the best chance of making the WS if you can land a big time starter (granted, only deGrom and maybe Syndergaard are on that level in this market, so that's unlikely). I just think that, by the time you've waited on guys like Burnes, Hiura and others to be significant pieces on a contending team, you're probably going to have a worse bullpen (due to injury or overuse) and lesser defense.
That is a fair argument to be sure but I don't see this team being one starter away when the offense is absolute trash and the rest of the rotation even with deGrom or Syndergaard is full of question marks. We have three absolute black holes at second base, shortstop, and catcher and can we really count on Aguilar to continue being one of the best hitters in baseball. I would rather just let this play out and let Stearns continue to build this organization. If I really believed that an ace was the difference in us being a legitimate world series contender I might be on board. There is no way to convince me to go all in when we are more than likely just a wild card team even with a stud atop the rotation. I do appreciate your point of view but I just don't believe the talent level of this team is nearly good enough. I think we are probably an 85 win roster and thats just not good enough to justify trading away our top prospects for any starter.
Thames and Guerra to the DL. Thames shouldn't be out long but Guerra has a forearm injury and that could be bad. He has been our best starter so we are fucked if its a long term injury.
I guess my thoughts on Milwaukee is I think it makes more sense to go all in for a starter like deGrom than it does to dip your toe in the water for someone like Happ or someone of his ilk. I like some of the guys in your farm system, but there's just not anyone I think is a star or an ace. Maybe Hiura if the defense is good enough at 2B, but even that seems a bit high for him, IMO. If you're telling me Burnes + Hiura + filler gets me deGrom, I'll take my chances on figuring the rest out because I think that changes the dynamic of your current roster in a significant way. If you're a small market team like Milwaukee, you're always going to have holes like you're talking about because it's pretty much impossible to develop a system good enough to cover an entire rotation + 8 every day players + a legit bullpen without acquiring established players in their primes. I just don't think that mentality is realistic if we're talking about building a team good enough to contend. If you want to win a title, you're more likely to succeed by finding one pitcher who shoves for a month than hoping to find multiple legit every day pieces to fill out a line-up. I think it's a really interesting conversation about team building, and we just view it from different sides.
Hard to believe that a team hitting Hernan Perez 4th would only score one run. Looks like another second half collapse.
Yeah we totally suck and need to pull out of any Machado discussions. Secondly we MUST fire Darnell Coles at the all star break. We scored three runs total in a doubleheader with two of them coming in the ninth inning down 6-0.
We should only make moves for cheap rentals that won't cost us anything useful. I think we all knew this was coming at some point with this offense sucking as much as it does. We add Cain and Yelich and get a ridiculous first half out of Aguilar and the offense still sucks.
Asdrubral Cabrera is my number one choice but Dozier will do. I am only willing to give scraps like we did for Neil Walker last year. There are a lot of decent middle infielder rentals available so it shouldn't cost much.
You can have both Aaron Wilkerson and Nate Orf. I hear Mike Zagurski is also available so you should grab him quick.
The need to decide whether they think they are in a dogfight for 90-93 wins or if they think the Cubs are going to pick it up and get to 96-98. The Cubs were a second half team in 15 and 17. 16 they just ran away with it from go. If it is the former, sure get aggressive. If it is the latter I think we wait it out with smaller deals. If nothing else with Stearns, you at least know that any aggression is informed by exhaustive analytics and not an emotional decision.
A lot of our better pitching pieces are fringe starters with a strong chance of ending up in the bullpen so I can envision a scenario where we have a good bullpen for a long time. Peralta, Ortiz, Houser, Diplan are all guys with big stuff but risk ending up in the pen. If they push in for an ace, fine. But if they sit still they are positioned to have good bullpen arms for a long time.
I don't think we were ever winning this division. The question is how desperate are we to win a wild card spot. I don't think its something worth going all out for. In 2008 when we traded for Sabathia we were desperate to make the playoffs since we hadn't been there since 82. There was also no play in game then so we knew we had a shot at winning a series. At this point in time I feel no desperation to make the playoffs if we don't have a legitimate shot at winning the world series. We just have way too many holes to win it all this year but I think we can be a bigger threat in the next few years when our rotation has guys like Burnes and Woodruff and our lineup has Hiura in it. With so many middle infielders available on the rental market it makes complete sense to go that route like we did with Walker last year. As frustrating as this week has been I think we all knew it was coming. We have a great GM that has turned this team around in a very short time. I am pretty certain that he knows that now is not the time to go all in for a short term solution like Machado. This rotation is not nearly good enough to compete in the playoffs and as I have said so many times the offense sucks. There will be a time to make a big move to win us a championship but that time is not now.
Hiura is starting and batting 5th in the futures game today. Ortiz was a late add to the team so maybe he will get in there as well.
I don't get why you don't want your team to go all out if they are in contention. No guarantee you will be in same position next year.
I see no reason to trade away our top prospects for short term solutions. We are positioned to be better in the next few years than we are now. Our rotation will be a strength next year with Nelson and Burnes and Hiura will give us a potential star at second base instead of the garbage we have been rotating at that position this season. We probably aren't winning the division and there is never a good reason to go all out to secure a wild card where its a 50/50 chance of your season ending in one game. You go all out when you are losing a star like Harper or when you have real championship aspirations.
I think he pretty much sucks. He can hit some but is one of the worst defensive players I have ever seen regardless of whether he plays second or short. Miller is a good bat off the bench but nothing more.
