    Milwaukee:

Most people don't take Milwaukee for being a happening city, but there is an incredible amount of stuff to do, depending on your interests.

    • Lake Michigan / Bradford Beach. Lake Michigan is beautiful, and Bradford Beach is a fun place to be in the summer, provided the air and water are both warm enough. Get here early, as hot days will fill the beach up to incredible capacity.

    • The Milwaukee Public Museum. This museum, not far from Bradford Beach (both off of Lincoln Memorial Drive), has fantastic exhibits year round. Next door, the Milwaukee Art Museum (featuring the big winged building called the Calatrava) is a Milwaukee centerpiece. There is a permanent large piece by the famed glass blower Dale Chihuly in this museum that is a must-see for any fans of fine art. Milwaukee Art Museum & Dale Chihuly

    • Restaurants and eateries. Milwaukee has a vibrant and diverse foodie community, and this is reflected in its restaurant offerings. If you are interested in Middle Eastern food (a personal favorite), there is an excellent restaurant called Shahrazad. There is fantastic Chinese (Emperor of China), Italian (Mimma's Cafe), and even Ethiopian (Alem Ethiopian Village). Of course, none of these are the classic Wisconsin food experience, which is offered by: Major Goolsby's, Sollly's Grille, and others. Plus also check out the Milwaukee Public Market, which has amazing food from local vendors.

    • Bars. I could speak for hours on the bars in Milwaukee. But it's better to experience. Head to Old German Beer Hall to celebrate Wisconsin's German heritage. If you want things with a little more razzle-dazzle, hit up Water Street, with bars such as Two Brothers, Lucille's Piano Bar, and Red Rock Saloon (disclaimer: these are big college-age hangouts, so prepare yourself appropriately). There's niche bars all over the place, such as the geek-geared 42 Lounge. Get a hotel, and an Uber. You won't be driving (or walking) anywhere.

    • Events. Depending on when you come to town, there are amazing, world-class events happening all over. Join us in June for Summerfest, the World's Largest Music Festival. This kicks off the season of festivals at Henry Maier Festival Park which features Wisconsin-culturally-relative festivals every few weeks throughout the summer. Coming in August? There's the Wisconsin State Fair! If you come in August, and don't get a cream puff at this event, you're doing it wrong. The Brewers also have great ticket bundles for this event. See a game, and the fair for cheap!

    • Shopping. Milwaukee has plenty of malls (Brookfield Square, Mayfair, Bayshore Town Center), all with great shopping options. There are tons of niche stores in these locations as well.

    And finally,

    • Gambling. Just down the street (literally, like a mile and a half away) from the ballpark is Potowatomi Bingo & Casino. With the recent addition of a high-rise hotel complex, this gambling venue has fast become the premier gaming location in Wisconsin. I've lost more money here playing poor hands of blackjack and video poker than I care to admit. Standard casino caveats apply. But seriously, it's a nice place.

There are some good restaurants/bars in the 3rd Ward too.

Milwaukee Ale House is a brew pub in that area with decent food, good beer, and a patio along the river if it's nice out. Cafe Benelux is a good spot in that area too, especially for brunch.

If you just want to drink your face off, Water Street downtown is a good spot since there are just a ton of bars there to go from one to the next.

I am acknowledging that this rec is much more generic than Emma's

I spend a decent amount of time up in Milwaukee because my inlaws live up there, but they never go out to eat at restaurants. They either eat at home (in other words I do all the cooking) or they go to the country club they belong to.

Unite Counsell with another ND grad in Coppolella! The Braves record of drafting pitchers along with the Brewers record of avoiding TJ surgeries would be a formidable outfit.

I don't like that list of candidates at all. Unless the Brewers go with my number one choice Jason McLeod they should just hire Montgomery who seems to have had a good draft. Makes no sense to me to pass on the best guy because he is too good of a scouting director.

Montgomery is very well regarded around baseball. Just give him the GM job with the directive to hire a new scouting director from outside the organization.

Coppolella is the GM in waiting in Atlanta and isn't going anywhere. He was the only name on the Haudricourt list that I would even consider. At this point I will be very disappointed if Montgomery isn't the next GM.

I never said that I hated Montgomery. I have always had questions about him and still do but I have warmed up to him. He is very well regarded around the league and it looks like he had a strong draft.

Unless there is some sure thing outside candidate and other than McLeod I don't know who that is I would just give Montgomery a shot. I would insist that he hires a scouting director from outside the organization but other than that he should get the job.

McLeod and Dipoto are the only other guys we should look at. I have no faith whatsoever in Attanasio to get this right and I am not even certain that Montgomery will end up being a good GM but I am more than willing to give him the chance.

I'm not going to pretend to know anything about these guys, but I would just like to see the the club brought forward to the 21st century level of thinking. Not saying I want to hire the guy with the highest SAT score of the group, but I don't want another grimy old scout. If Montgomery has made strides in the scouting department maybe he should stay put in that role and let someone else run the show.

Billy Epler of the yankees gets mentioned every time a GM opening comes up and I have no clue why. They have been every bit as inept as the Brewers in drafting and developing. Names like this make me very nervous. Montgomery doesn't have to be the choice but I have become more and more comfortable with him since everything I read about the guy sounds great.

No matter who the next GM is things wont improve until Attanasio stops interfering and signing every middling free agent pitcher. Jason McLeod is still my number one choice but Ray Montgomery is a close number two for me.

    PROSPECT PROFILE: MARCOS DIPLAN

In five June starts, former Milwaukee ace Yovani Gallardo compiled a stellar 0.54 ERA with nine walks and 25 strikeouts for the Texas Rangers. While depressed Brewers fans might view Gallardo’s month-long dominance as another dash of salt in this festering wound of a 2015 season, optimistic and forward-looking fans, buoyed by a recent stretch of winning baseball, might prefer instead to recall that the franchise-altering facelift many of them hope to see accomplished by the July 31 trade deadline actually began six months ago with Gallardo himself.

On January 19, 2015, Milwaukee dealt Gallardo to Texas for three prospects: shortstop Luis Sardinas, reliever Corey Knebel, and right-hander Marcos Diplan. Both Sardinas, a strong defender who could develop into a useful utility infielder, and Knebel, a hard-throwing righty with back-of-the-bullpen potential, have split time this season between Milwaukee and Triple-A Colorado Springs. One day the Brewers will return to playoff contention, and there is no reason to think that Sardinas, 22, and Knebel, 23, cannot be part of that revival. For the Gallardo deal to pay huge dividends, however, 18-year-old starter Marcos Diplan must fulfill his enormous potential.

    *****

When BP Milwaukee’s Derek Harvey profiled Diplan for Brew Crew Ball in January, fans knew little about the young right-hander their club had acquired. Born September 18, 1996, in Santiago de los Caballo, Dominican Republic, Diplan signed with the Rangers on July 2, 2013 for $1.3 million. As a 16-year-old, he was widely regarded as the top pitching prospect in the 2013 international class. At 6-feet tall and 160 pounds, with room to grow and a fastball that touched 95, Diplan drew lofty comparisons to another shorter-than-average Dominican right-hander named Pedro Martinez. (Brewers fans can wistfully dream on that comp for a few years.) In 2014, Diplan compiled a 7-2 record and 1.54 ERA in 13 starts with the Rangers’ DSL team, racking up 57 strikeouts in 64.1 innings. He also yielded 36 walks, which translates to a bloated 5.04 BB/9 ratio — an eye-popping number in light of his 1.06 WHIP. DSL batters, it seems, drew free passes from Diplan rather than try to hit him.

Following the trade, Diplan reported to extended spring training, where the Brewers got a much closer look at their young pitcher. Club officials liked what they saw, for Diplan skipped the Arizona Rookie League and received an aggressive assignment to Helena, Milwaukee’s short-season affiliate in the Pioneer League. Reid Nichols, Director of Player Development for the Brewers, offered both a positive assessment of Diplan and a simple goal for the youngster. “He has a big arm,” Nichols told me, “but he just needs some time. For now, he needs to learn to pitch down” in the strike zone.

In the fifth inning of his second start with Helena, a June 24 game at Missoula, Diplan encountered some adversity that called for reinforcement of that simple message. With the Brewers leading 2-0, Diplan surrendered a pair of solo home runs.

“He reacted like you’d expect from a young pitcher,” Helena manager Tony Diggs told me. “He had that look on his face like ‘What am I doing wrong?’” Pitching coach Rolando Valles made a trip to the mound. “They had a quick conversation,” Diggs recalled. “Rolando reminded him to work back down in the zone, and after that he kept the ball down.”

Diplan escaped the fifth and made it through seven innings. His final line was 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Additionally, seven outs came via the ground ball. This constituted an improvement over his first start on June 19, also against Missoula, when he struck out eight and got the win, but lasted only five innings — in part because he walked four and induced only three groundouts. It is a verysmall sample, but one can hope that Diplan’s early results, bolstered by a consistent, organizational approach to his development — pitch down – auger well for his future as a starter.

In a sport whose educators are charged with turning teenagers into professionals, a player’s “makeup” — a term that encompasses a variety of intangibles — becomes part of his scouting report. According to his manager, Diplan is “a good kid, grounded, and very coachable.” This impression stems not only from his brief time in Helena but from extended spring training, where Diggs also had a chance to spend time with Diplan.

Diggs added that as the youngster worked to improve his mechanics he also was developing anunderstanding of how to pitch. “There’s no panic,” Diggs said of Diplan. “I saw in extended spring that he keeps his poise even when he doesn’t have his great stuff. He goes through the same routine, pitches at the same tempo.” Like pitch location, poise and tempo helped Diplan move past those two home runs against Missoula and finish seven strong innings.

To succeed as a starter in the majors, Diplan will need not only excellent mechanics and makeup but a starter’s repertoire. “He has three pitches,” Diggs told me, “and he commands two of them.” The early results suggest what Diggs confirmed: Diplan has great command of his fastball and curve, but that third pitch — in this case the changeup — is where the rubber meets the road for a starter. “He projects well,” Diggs said. “I think he’s going to be a major-league starter.” Still, when asked about Diplan’s weaknesses, Diggs was quick to note that the changeup must get better. There’s time for that, of course.

Indeed, his exceptional talent notwithstanding, Diplan’s biggest advantage might be time itself. At 18, he is the third-youngest pitcher in the Pioneer League. Assuming he continues to develop, he should receive his first taste of full-season ball in 2016. From there, it is not unreasonable to think that he might get a late-season callup as early as 2018, or that he could win a rotation spot by 2019 or 2020.

At that point, Brewers fans would have every reason to hope that their young pitcher, acquired as a teenager, mentored and developed with a consistent approach through every level of the organization, will spend the next decade of his career helping them forget about 2015.

Prospect of the Day: LHP Wei-Chung Wang, Brevard County

What's infuriating is that no matter how good this team is, as constructed, is good for a month to 6 weeks of terrible baseball where everyone slumps at once. Regardless of when it is the results are about the same the last few years.

    In 2013 it was May
    In 2014 it was Aug-Sep
    In 2015 it was April

Ownership thinks the same way you do and it's why this team is not even close to contending. If we can make smart trades for Segura, Gomez, and Lucroy we can be good again within a few years. Not making these moves will leave us battling the Reds for last place for many years to come.

This team is pretty much a 75-80 win team. They aren't nearly as bad as the Phillies and Marlins but also not nearly good enough to make the playoffs. We have some assets to trade but who knows if anyone worthwhile will actually get dealt.
