Most of the lynchings out there were probably ruled suicides as investigators were more familiar with people living in west Texas wanting to hang themselves.
Just an uneducated guess but: Mountains don't leave room for farming/ livestock. Rocky terrain doesn't afford the travel logistics to get manufactured goods out to the rest of the country, so no factories either. So all that's left if retail. Just a dumb tired guess on a Sunday night.
And in a weird way, a lot of these resort towns (I've really noticed this with ski towns) you get a tone of outlet malls and retail stores in them. Every ski town I've been in (and I started going since 2005 till now) always has a lot of them. From what my dad tells me it used to never be like that (he went a lot in the 80's, or obviously closer to the 1990)
