Really think the US should bring in Finlay for a camp. Young at 24. One of the best true wingers in MLS. Born in the US wants to play with US, but can play for Canada.

The "core player" has been in the works for a bit. Essentially its a 4th DP that has a max salary, I think 400k was the number being tossed around. How much does Omar make? I would think with the other 3 he would get slotted into the "core player" spot.

    Over $1 Million. $1.25 Million I think in 2015.

You are not even a DP unless you make more than 400K.

I'm sure my numbers are way off. I just remember Robb Heinneman talking about it on the radio a month or so back. Essentially said it'd be like 3.5 DPs because the "core player" would have its own max salary unlike a normal DP.

I think it will (and should) have a max salary. Just saying the DP's (over 23 years old) count around $425K towards the salary cap. The rest is covered by the club, so the max salary for a core player would have to be greater than $400K and I would imagine would be in the $1.5-2 Million range, so it can cover Omar.

Not the best effort from Sportings video dept but worth the watch for Doms FK and Nemeths chip towards the end.

Dos Santos and Chicharito would help the MLS make inroads with higher popularity in Mexico and more waves internationally but I hate to see the continued focus on exploding the top tier pay scale and the lower level players get left behind further each day. More should have been done to make the minimum salary higher at the negotiations during the spring if MLS is going to keep adding DP slots.

I agree but they did significantly raise the minimum.
    Didn't it double from 30k to 60k?

Double it again, imo. How many players are on the roster? It would cost 600k-1.2m per team - less than 1 more dp and would immensely improve the overall quality of the league.

And I agree. I just watch the Metros try to overpay a random retiree from Europe way to many times...

I've just always though that this plan of "add a dude who makes 3.1 million to a roster that makes $100k each" was dumb. I think that a team of 20 players who are worth 250k each beats the first team 9/10 times.

Are there that many guys on the league or that would come over that are worth $250k? No need to overpay mid tier guys. Glad they upped the minimum, but it's even better that they now have reserve teams in the USL where those guys can get minutes to develop.

MLS is right between Colombia and Greece.
In general, an extra 60k on average puts the MLS up above the Scottish Premiership in terms of drawing talent.

MLS makes up the rules as they go. If anyone here tries to tell you they know how players are assigned when they come to MLS they are full of shit

I believe typically foreign DPs are treated like Free Agents and can sign with any team as long as they have a DP slot. Basically just ends up being about money and the willingness for said player to play in MLS at that particular club.

American DPs are treated differently and are subject to some sort of allocation order, but typically also just go to the team that offers the most money in the location that those players are willing to play in.

In the end, MLS basically just tweaks/changes the rules as the seasons progress, so that they can sign certain players that will move the needle.

If MLS can sign Dos Santos, but only in LA then they will make it happen in some way shape or form because getting a Mexican Star is worth the PR hit that comes with constantly changing your player acquisition rules.

For Jermaine Jones, both Chicago and New England wanted him and they both had spots.
They did a "blind envelope draw". They basically drew from a hat to decide.

This is an example where MLS deserves to be mocked.

NE/CHI basically offered the same contract to Jones. Jones didn't really care and the league didn't want to play favorites, so they did a draw from a hat.

I believe MLS changed that policy not that it would likely ever happen again anyway.

Exactly, the allocation order is complete BS. Case in point, Dempsey going to Seattle when Portland was #1 in the allocation order and by the way the rules read at the time had the right to sign him first but were never even allowed to offer a contract as he was hand placed in Seattle.

So the "core player" rule is released. MLS will provide each team with 100k to "buy down" the contracts of one of their DPs. As long as that 100k lowers their salary to below DP level it will open up a 4th DP spot. The catch is if a team uses this they have to replace that 3rd DP with the 4th DP.

So like I said earlier for a team like sporting this helps cause Besler/Zusi can be bought down into non DPs but I don't see how it'll be beneficial to LAG with their DP contracts cause I'm guessing Dos Santos will want to sign for more than the $530k or whatever it takes.

Edit: so it looks like each team gets $500k total and can use all that in 1 season if they want to buy a contract down to under DP level. But then they would have to trade with other clubs to get more of this "targeted allocation funds" to use over the next 4 years or be s.o.l. in the 4th DP dept.

As always, this is MLS so this rule will be rewritten when need be.

The way it was explained to me was that teams have always been able to pay down DP Salaries with allocation money. The CBA provided an additionally $100,000 per year of allocation money, but you can use up to 5 years or $500,000 at one time. Gonzo makes $1.25, but if Dos Santos comes in late for say the last 1/3 of the year then the Galaxy only owe Gonza a fraction of that amount and then can pay down the prorated portion of his salary and be able to sign Dos Santos.

It only looks like a 1/2 season fix for LA. Not sure what they would do in 2016, but think this is last year of Gonzo's contract.

Obviously if this is the case and you only get the extra $100,000 then the change is minor and will basically allow a team to add one additional low-priced DP for a short window.

This is the best video I have seen on covering something on MLS. I wish the league would do a better job of marketing the clubs, instead they are so focused on the individuals that your average joe thinks the fans move around like a little kid following his favorite player.

Club and country are more important than any 1 individual.
