The other aspect is that Diomande drew Rimando to that side of the goal, so he definitely impacted the play while offsides. This should have been caught by VAR. Both plays are confusing. Several certified referees tweeted that the officials called the plays exactly as FIFA has taught them to call them.
I don’t see how the overturned RSL goal can be defended. It was called a goal during the run of play correct? The only thing that makes sense to me is that it was called off and the VAR ruled it wasn’t “clear and obvious” the ball came off the LAFC guy and not the RSL guy.
It’s my understanding that the AR on the other side of the field called the off-sides. She could see Saucedo in an off-side position, but I doubt that she saw the ball deflect off of the defender. The Center official probably should have over-ruled it and the VAR definitely should have, imo.
Went to see Red Bulls vs Orlando last night with my soccer club. Got an on-field press pass to take pictures and then went up to the press booth to hang with Shep Messing. I've been friends with Shep for a few years and he is super guy. Pretty cool experience.
