I'm assuming there's a 3D option where they pay you?

I looked at this back when it was $50/month, it's almost a no-brainer now.

my understanding is that the theaters don't even need to "sign up." The company just pays them directly for the full price of the ticket

I don't see how this is a sustainable business model at $10 a month unless they are counting on a bunch of people signing up and just never using it.

I would think the % of non users would have to be extremely high. The theater back in my home town is over $10 just to see one 2D movie. Use it once and the company has already lost money on you for that month.

The article I read said that their main source of money from this will be selling the users' movie going info to production and marketing companies.

I understand the concept at the most base level. The service is there to offset the revenue loss of films playing to small audiences in off hours, or people who are dissuaded by full theaters for big time releases.

With that said, $10 still seems incredibly low. I don't see casual movie viewers buying this service. It seems like those who would be interested are those who go to see films 2-3 times a month. I mean, at least in my experience, walking out the door, it's probably around $20 to see a new release after the ticket and any concessions.

Give me the opportunity to see any film I want at $10 a month in movie theater quality with my own snacks? Sorry, but any theater is about to lose money in that exchange.

They originally were set up like a gym where they hoped enough people wouldn't go so that they'd make money. That was at $30-50 a month. At $10 a month they will 100% lose money, but they're counting on targeted ads. My guess is that they can't stay solvent long enough for the ad revenue to get them to a sustainable level. It's a really cool idea though and I hope it works. I'd sign up for sure.

Just like any startup in the modern age, it's designed to survive on equity infusions for several years until consumers become dependent on it

Yes I was a member for 2 years or so before they changed the program. Not sure if they changed it back but after it being a movie a day (only can see a movie once) it went to a certain number of tickets available in an area and would sell out before I could ever go see a movie so I called them (horrrrrible customer service, its seemingly 2-3 guys in an office somewhere) and canceled. I'll have to see how its being run now but $10 is a good deal. The app is easy to use. You pick a movie, it loads the money onto a credit card they send you and then it will work for the ticket. Then you have to wait 24 hours from that moment to buy another one.

The big catch is you can't buy online in advance. you have to be at the theater and I believe you can only use the app for a movie once so no repeat viewings under the program.

But with as frequently as I go to the movies and how expensive it is now ($9 and change for matinee) this seems more than worth it

You can select any movie in the app and still choose another at checkout. For a few months they required you to take a picture of the stub but I noticed a couple weeks ago it wasn't requiring that anymore again. Also, works out well with the building up points on whatever rewards your theater offers.

When I was looking into it earlier today I did see that they are no longer doing the 24 hour rule, but a 1 a day... I don't think I'd go to to 2 movies in a day but I could see myself going to a Friday night and then a Saturday day time feature

Doesn't make sense. If I signed up for this in the summer, which is about the only time this would be worth my while, I'd actually go see a movie much more frequently. That's just more money for them. But what do I know? :idk:

"AMC believes that holding out to consumers that first run movies can be watched in theatres at great quantities for a monthly price of $9.95 isn’t doing moviegoers any favors."

Reading the press release, they are worried about the long-term consequences. If MoviePass fails, then movie goers will be disappointed they can't see movies so cheaply anymore and may be more reluctant to go back to paying the high prices of yesterday. If MoviePass succeeds, then AMC is worried that other theaters participating in the program will be of lower quality and discourage movie goes in the longer term and they are worried that it would undermine profits for studios.

Also AMC does not want to offer discounts to MoviePass in the future, which is their speculated long-term plan. Right now MoviePass will buy the ticket for you, essentially. Reading between the lines, either AMC stands against the discount, which likely leads to MoviePass pulling AMC support, due to them not being profitable to MoviePass, to which the PR spin will be against AMC and will be a boon to competing theaters, or AMC caves and their profits do go down in regards to ticket sales.

As someone who hasn't been to the theaters at all this year, I have no interest. However, if they threw in unlimited popcorn I could be persuaded.

This is what I was thinking as well. FB data is incredibly valuable for obvious reasons.

I don't care if these guys get a million users... how is it valuable for advertisers to know that Maria went to see Madea's Halloween in October?
