My thoughts on ASOIAF as I read it ***Serious Spoilers!!***

I'm about 260 pages into A Storm of Swords and I'm going to use this thread to give my thoughts without spoiling someone else's ASOS thread. I'm not planning on updating this after every chapter, only when there's something on my mind.

Anyways, I just got done with the Catelyn chapter where Robb has to kill Karstark. I can't believe the Tully's are so fucking stupid (except for the Blackfish). Edmure went out and fought Tywin and ruined Robb's plans. Cat is stupid and selfish and for those reasons she let Jaime go. Lisa is also stupid and selfish and is scared to leave the vale to help her family.

Robb is doing his best (although even he went and married Jeyne Westerling and cost himself an alliance with the Frey's), but his family, friends, and bannermen keep fucking him over by being selfish dumbshits.

What the fuck is wrong with these people? It's like watching Michigan St. when Johnelle Smith was coaching them. They had a 17 point lead going into the fourth quarter and now they're fucking it all up.

 

So Dondarrion and the Hound just fought.

 

Just got past the chapter where Bran (as Summer) and Jon fuck up the Wildlings. I wonder if Bran was aware that it was Jon that he was helping? Obviously he didn't attack Jon, but when he's in Summer is he able recognize individuals and then remember them once he transfers back into his body?

Bran is going to be a force to be reckoned with if he can ever gain full control of his third eye. He can already "merge" with Summer, and he did it for a split second with Hodor. If he can ever learn how to do it with any animal that he wants, he can become pretty dangerous. It also means that he'll have to die twice in order to be really dead. Once as a human and once as Summer. Hopefully he doesn't die at all, though, because he's become my favorite POV character.

Speaking of POV characters, I think the only one that has died so far was Ned. Every other POV character is alive and well, and Theon is the only one who I can see dying. Of course, he may already be dead since he hasn't had a chapter since book 2 and he isn't in the table of contents for book 3.

His dreams as Summer are awesome and their group has been relatively successful. I also love the Reeds. They seem to know a lot about his dreams and also about the history of their father and Ned. And since something important obviously happened at the Tower of Joy and Ned has died, they're probably our best chance at finding out exactly what it was. I feel like I learn more about the world in Bran chapters than I do in other chapters.

Hodor is also hodoring all the time, which always makes me chuckle.

 

Welp just got done with the Red Wedding. I spoilered myself about it a few years ago (before the HBO series was announced) so I knew it was coming, but it still bummed me out. I kept hoping that I was remembering it wrong and Robb didn't die. Robb was one of my favorites .

What is the point of introducing Oberyn Martell if he's just going to die a few chapters later?

 

I'm hoping that it causes the Martells to rebel against the Lannisters... but so far nothing I've hoped for has actually happened, so I'm not holding my breath.

 

Stannis

 

The last 150 pages or so are a complete mindfuck with so many people dying and changing allegiances, not to mention Cat coming back to life (after Arya/Nymeria pulled her from the river). If anyone watches Community, I felt like the dean in the fake gun scene from season 2.

Now that Joffrey and Tywin are dead, the only characters I really dislike are Cersei, the Freys, and Littlefinger. On the other hand, I'm starting to really like Jaime.

All Cersei wants is power and she'll do anything to get it, and now that Tywin is dead there's really no one to stop her from doing whatever she wants. She has always been an evil bitch, and it seems like even Jaime has started to see it. The loss of his hand and his time with Brienne seems to have changed him for the better. He showed remorse for Bran and says that he let the Kingsguard turn to shit. I especially like that he realizes the rest of his page in the white book will be filled with whatever he chooses, so if he does good things his page will be filled with good things. And if he's evil, his page will reflect that, too.

Littlefinger is a lot like Cersei. He just wants to be in power and doesn't care who he tramples over to get his way. Lysa was insane, but it was fucked up for him to tell her he always loved Cat and then shove her out the door. Now that he doesn't have a wife, he's probably going to try to force Sansa to marry him.

As for Sansa, being around Littlefinger will make her smarter. From the beginning of the series she's been naive and gullible, but she's starting to realize how the game is played.

Jon being the Lord Commander wasn't really a surprise, especially with Sam being the one who was going around trying to unite everyone behind a single candidate. I'm just happy that Jon and Ghost are both alive. If they had died in addition to Robb and Grey Wind I probably would have stopped reading.

I wish there had been another Bran chapter near the end of the book. I think he's going to do something awesome once he finds the crow with three eyes, but I guess I'll have to get to book 5 before I find out. He's also the heir to Winterfell.

Tyrion going to the free cities is better than him dying, but either way it sucks that he lost and Cersei won. He got to kill Tywin and Shae, but I think that will just make Cersei more powerful. Although I think it's just a matter of time before he and Dany link up and he joins her cause.

 

I'm about half way through A Feast for Crows, and it's not as bad as people make it out to be. The only chapters that really annoy me are the Brienne chapters... I'm not sure why I need to know about her wandering around crackclaw point looking for Sansa. Jaime is continuing to grow on me and I actually kind of like the chapters in Dorne and the Iron Islands.

I really like the Cersei chapters. She's batshit crazy and a lot of people are starting to see it. I don't think she'll be able to continue on this path for long. She's losing a lot of friends. Her downfall (if it happens) will be awesome.

 

Just finished AFFC and I really liked it. I don't think it's half as bad as people make it out to be. I really liked the new viewpoints.

Cersei is one of the WOAT people. She sucks as a mother, sister, and queen. I can't wait for Tyrion or Jaime to strangle her (if the fortune teller was right). Jaime is awesome for not responding to her letter. I hope he can regain his honor before he dies (since I'm really starting to like him I'm assuming that he's going to die so I'm not surprised when it happens).

I do feel bad for Brienne, though. Whether she's alive or undead, Cat Stark is a pro at fucking things up. She sent Brienne to bring back Arya and Sansa, but now she's killing Brienne for trying to bring back Arya and Sansa. At least we don't have to read through any more of her chapters.

Things seem to be going alright for Sansa, but she's starting to trust Littlefinger too much. He'll turn her over to the Lannisters if it helps his own advancement.

Now it's time to start ADWD.
