The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is resuming their second Saturday in May food drive program. This week, you will receive a post card informing you of the drive and a paper bag later in the week in which you can put your donated goods. It's a tremendous program that helps to fortify the inventory of local food banks and I encourage all to participate, if able. However, I do ask you to keep in mind what it means for your personal letter carrier. He/she likely has about 500+ customers on his/her route. If only 20% of those folks donate, that's 100 bags that they will have to either carry back to their postal vehicle or, after delivering the mail, drive around to pick up the donated goods. They also have to unload the stuff at the end of the day. If you would like to make an incredibly tough day easier on your carrier, you can drop off your donation at your local post office or simply leave it at any postal vehicle in your neighborhood. I can assure you, the effort on your part will be appreciated.
All for donations to local food banks. I give money to mine quarterly, and have volunteered my time as well. good advice re: mail carriers though for this drive.
