Nah it was Cota a few years back. It rained and the tires were rooster tailing so bad no one could see. Combine that with straight aways where you get up to 150+ coming up to a turn where you have to get down to 50 to make the turn and no one could see. It was demolition derby.
One of the more embarrassing moments for NASCAR recently and there have been a lot of those moments recently
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Build the wall in Texas. Set up barriers. Make these dummies figure out how to make big car go vroom vroom on the racing surface. The racing would be so much better if they had to slow the cars down to make those corners. Make drivers drive instead of just hauling ass in the biggest possible arc around every corner or shaving off the S’s.
Post race they said that when the 9 got to the 1, the 1 just totally moved out of the way and let him by.
I didn't think Harvick was great his first year but I think he's gotten a good bit better. Still do not enjoy Bowyer. /Creed thoughts
I have a dumb question. Is it the general consensus that the points system is broken, or am I (as a newcomer) completely off base? It seems like winning a nascar race is exceptionally hard, and doing it three times in a row should almost certainly mean you are at the top of the standings. Just seems like the values of things like laps lead and stage wins should be adjusted. I think someone has explained this ITT before, something about some driver broke the system years back or something.
I personally think it is. Maybe not so much the point system but the way the playoffs work and the way wins automatically get you in the playoffs. It's manufactured drama that pretty frequently doesn't reward the best team for that year. I am old school and like the old system from 20 years back.
Stage racing. Fucks with the point standings and also ruins the racing now. I’m assuming fans do not give a flying fuck about stages at this point, so chasing stage points is just another tune out.
A win automatically gets you into the playoffs so the point standings are really there to judge the other things.
Playoff 100% need changed and I think those are coming next season. The regular season stuff is fine, best cars are still getting to the playoffs.
So in a way it’s setup so that if you don’t get a win and an auto bid but you’re running really good all year, you still get a shot at the playoffs? I guess that makes sense. Similar to CBB with auto bids and at large teams.
The win being everything I think creates shit that isn't racing like wrecking the top 2 cars to win the race like Richmond last year. I guess that's entertaining to some extent and creates drama but I mean that isn't racing.
I’ve been getting some old nascar reels of like peak Earnhardt and Gordon days on TikTok lately and holy shit. I’m sure it’s all romanticized because they are picking the best clips but the racing just seems incredible.
Yea I've been seeing the same. And yea the racing was much better. Like the cars were more free to be driven, if that makes sense. And you had packs of cars jockeying around, not playing follow the leader. So many tracks today are fun for a lap on a restart and then there's 1/4 lap between cars after that. You wait for 30 minutes for maybe the 2nd place car to run down the leader to maybe get some racing.
I don't know if it's technology or what but yeah the racing is very bad now and used to be way more interesting
I think this gen car is capable of good racing. They need to lean into what they’re seeing with the multi-compound races, even if it’s just to bring a softer tire that cant’t make a full fuel run under full push as the only tire. Stage racing is fine I guess, but don’t throw a competition caution. Just stay green and award the winner or whatever. Get some aerokit in the hands of the teams or manufacturers, or at least open multiple corporate packages for each race. Let the teams take more responsibility and risk with their choices for a race again. Make the playoff a punch card system. Maybe 2 or 3 wins gets you in, maybe only the top 4 winners by win total get in, then fill out on points from there. Make the whole season matter if you’re going to do the whole song dance about a full time competitor missing half a race and saying he shouldn’t qualify. It’s fairly simple to make some of these changes to get a better product without blowing up the framework. Oh and shorten at least 80% of these races. Anything beyond 2 green flag stops should be cut down. 200-300 hard miles.
