Hope you get as good of weather as we got. One day was a record high at 66. The rest were hovering around 50s.
http://theknow.denverpost.com/2017/12/12/national-park-service-free-days-2018/169819/ National Park Service slashes number of free-access days from 10 to four in 2018 This May 5, 2015, file photo, shows hikers on the Canyon Overlook Trail in Zion National Park. The number of free-access days will be cut in 2018. (Trent Nelson, The Salt Lake Tribune via AP) The National Park Service on Tuesday said it will trim the number of free-access days to four in 2018 from 10 this year and 16 last year. “We hope that these fee-free days offer visitors an extra incentive to enjoy their national parks in 2018,” National Park Service Deputy Director Michael T. Reynolds said in a news release. But the move comes as the park service weighs public input on a plan to more than double gate-fees at its most popular parks, including Rocky Mountain National Park. And heat from conservation groups came quickly. “America’s parks must remain affordable for working families,” Center for Western Priorities’ advocacy director Jesse Prentice-Dunn said in a statement. “Instead of pushing massive increases to entrance fees and cutting fee-free days, (Interior Secretary) Ryan Zinke should ensure all Americans have access to our parks and public lands.” On the heels of its centennial celebration that saw record-level crowds, the National Park Service in October proposed more than doubling entrance fees at its 17 busiest parks. The entrance fee plan came only a few months after the Trump Administration proposed a budget that slashes park service funding by $1.5 billion. The proposal would push peak-season entrance fees in 2018 to $70 from $30. The agency said the added revenue is needed to address long overdue maintenance and upgrades at its 417 properties, of which only 118 charge for entry. Last month the agency extended the initially month-long public comment period to Dec. 22. The agency is taking comments at its website. Conservation and recreation groups blasted the proposed entrance fee increase. Zinke also harvested fierce criticism for his plan to cut about 2 million acres from the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante national monuments in Utah. “Not everyone can book a helicopter or charter a boat when they want to visit our national parks,” Prentice-Dunn said Tuesday, referring to news reports of Zinke using a government helicopter for travel — reports the secretary blasted as “total fabrications.” Free entrance to national parks in 2018: Jan. 15, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Apr. 21, the first day of National Park Week Sept. 22, National Public Lands Day Nov. 11, Veterans Day.

my mancrush on fly fishing legend George Daniel really took a hit when i learned he was bff's with DTjr :<
They announced that proposal months ago. Rather than use the budget to cover the parks they are taking it straight from peoples pockets.
Ryan Zinke is clawing his way to the top of my list. I hope that fucker’s next private plane goes down right outside of a national park and they leave it for people to piss on while they briefly pay the elevated fees.
Jesus Christ that's some bullshit. I'm pretty sure that's one service the federal government provides with our tax dollars that is universally loved. Hopefully that proposal gets mutumbo'd.
Yup. More than double the daily cost for the popular parks. That’s going to destroy some of the small towns that depend on tourism.
I’ve taken trips to a National Park with my family the last 2 years in August or September for 4 to 5 days. We did Rocky Mountain in 2016, and Arches/Canyonlands last year. Looking to do Glacier, Grand Teton, or Olympic this year. Will read this thread and be back with questions.
These National Parks are already strapped for cash and their maintenence is backlogged in the millions, especially with the rise In visitors. Trump has already cut 2.5 billion from their budget this year and Park employess get paid shit. Trump, Zinke, Pruitt and Perry can all go get fucked, they're setting us back decades.
You already posted about this. On this exact page even. Hope everyone went yesterday! It was free (zing cold where I'm at)
I'm impressed. It's not a place that many people jog. My oldest son jogged it, but he's jogged/ran several of Utah's highest peaks.
I don't understand the thinking. Annually, more and more Americans want to get away to the National Parks. Yet the Feds continue to cut funding to the Parks. I know that In Utah there has been a consistent pressure to privatize Federal lands so that already rich citizens can buy up those lands and become even richer. Are Trump and Zinke simply part of that movement?
Anyone been to Joshua Tree National Park? Going their for a 3-day weekend in a couple weeks and was wondering what types of hikes people have done in the park or other things you'd recommend seeing
A few times there was a logjam in the tight areas but other than that it was smooth sailing. First time running in 10 months

we have such good to great national parks . that is why I say we do not need a wall ? walls are meant to be climbed and dug . now that being said no-one listens . they are like the cop who is 50 years behind times , still smoking ciggs telling people what to do . never changes . the public reject went in the military, played with a gun , could not conform , so he became or she , a cop so they could continue doing just that . fucking cops live for swat practices . could you imagin a fucking cop in 2018 smokeing a cigg ???????????????????????????????????? what a fucking stupid fucking idiot . yeah no wall . why ? simple . for how long have each of us been saying that we need another commodity to sell to the world ? like 50 years ? duh ? and we got smart and adopted Spanish so the language transition would be easy . so ! just go on down and incorporate all the way down to brazill .and put a corner on meds ? smart huh ? and ! more great national parks ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
we have oxygen and meds on each side of us and all we can do is fucking complain and complain and more and more . and the ability to grow life sustaining food . also it takes us full cycle to continents . everyone benefits .
It’s not new to trump and zinke. It’s a republican platform thing. DOI hasn’t been properly funded in a very long time.
My bad. Didnt mean to waste your time looking at the same thing on the exact same page. Oh the horror.
Wife's spring break is the week of March 12 and we're looking to head somewhere for a few days of day hikes. Anyone know how the trails in Sequoia and Kings Canyon are in March? Not looking to do any snow shoeing. Thinking specifically of trails like Mist Falls. I'm sure anything around Mt Whitney or at high elevations will be snowed under.
If i was going that time of year, I'd hit a desert one that you wouldn't want to visit in the summer like Death Valley. Even the other desert NPs like Zion, Canyon lands, Grand Canyon, etc. could be snowed out that time of year. Edit - Big Bend would probably be nice.
we just did Big Bend in Nov, and Im doing Moab/Utah in late March. Yosemite and Glacier are top of my list generally speaking, but flights aren't super competitive. I'm buying for two, so cost is a factor, esp this close to departure date.
Glacier is my favorite. I think that early in March you may have to look at a snowmobile tour of Glacier. Camping doesn't open until June, iirc.
Snowmachining is awesome but it sucks that you’re governed to like 25 MPH and trails only down there.
