It just creates more chaos for coaches to continually to recruit their roster along with 3-4 high school recruiting classes.
They'll burnout quick to and a decent number of them will either leave the profession or go to the NFL.
If only these rules existed in the days of Urban Meyer telling every high school athlete he envisioned them as the next Percy Harvin
It's good. Players shouldn't be more restricted than any coach. It does bring on a true free agency model, but that bandaid was mostly off anyways. Go ahead and get rid of the imaginary tampering rules, too
I think this will be bad for the sport, but Im fine with it. I think most of us have come to realize this sport we love was built on enormous exploitation of the athletes. Reducing that exploitation and giving more power to the players is a good thing, even if it changes the sport for the worse.
They should just combine the transfer and NIL issues, and let players sign contracts for one, two, or three years. Negotiate the money, terms, and length. And if they want to transfer (break the contract) they can pay an agreed upon buyout and/or have to sit out a year. It’s already basically college free agency so might as well go all in.
I do wonder how many players in the transfer portal ended up not finding new homes and are out of luck as a result. I remember there being reports of thousands of athletes being in the portal at one point.
They really need a players union to formalize all of this. Probably where it is heading, but it'll chaos until then
They need a players union, there needs to be an established governing body, and some kind of structure for NIL, transfer portal, etc. The current chaos is not sustainable.
The NCAA is a joke. They've let go of the reigns to try to hold on to their paychecks just a little longer, but its futile bc they know their days are numbered.
It's not, but also, idk why schools and conferences would agree to an overall governing body. There's no incentive for it. Especially for the top 5-10ish school. What makes sense for Bama and OSU barely does for a Illinois or Vandy. And even less so for a kansas or Ball St.
The easiest way to setup a uniform framework that would pass judicial scrutiny is classify the players as Employees --> let them unionize --> then come up with a collective bargaining agreement that encompasses all the rules. Problem is, the Schools don't want this. That would mean a significant chunk of the pie going to the athlete. And no longer ad hoc exploiting cheap/free labor. Thats why Sankey is lobbying Republican senators and implying a Republican congress is what they need...to get legislation that avoids the Employer/Employee issue. I do wonder if you could move Football, and only Football, outside the current NCAA framework.
UT has been looking for a transfer running back and we got room so if he does anything that is great.
that was across all sports at one moment in time and after the NCAA gave the extra free year. Of course inventory was bloated, there were more athletes for the same number of scholarships.
