Beggars and choosers and all that but good lord did that kid look soft. I'll be shocked if he ever cracks that starting lineup
Michigan has run into problems with several guys the last couple weeks because of when classes started where guys like Spindler, Coogan and some others wouldn't be able to come in for spring ball to win jobs.
We’ve seen it more with basketball recently but Michigan seems to be especially rigid when it comes to admissions of athletics transfers.
we are like a month into school, it’s kind of weird to allow kids to transfer in when the semester is 1/3 over at some places
It’s almost like there’s no sign off process for a late admission to whatever bullshit electives they planned on signing up for, or split semester courses.
It’s weird that you think all schools would be created equally in this regard. They all have different calendars and policies
Michigan's winter admissions period is closed, which means players who enter the portal this late and want to take visits are going to have to wait to join the team/school until May when the semester is over. Not sure why pointing that out would annoy you. I was just explaining why Spindler and Coogan seem unlikely to land at Michigan.
And this is going to especially come into play if the coaches' proposed changes go into play regarding the new portal windows. That would screw anyone who starts in early January over.
Sherron Moore: We have this transfer that would really help out our team if our admissions policies weren’t so rigid, can we do anything? Known academic stalwart and sports hater Santa Ono: nope sorry Sherron nothing we can do. We must uphold the academic integrity of the university
Seems like this easily could be solved by allowing players to practice who have been admitted to the school and enrolled in the next available semester that the student is eligible to take classes. When Ohio State was on a quarter system through the 1990’s, we did not start Fall Quarter until the second week of September. We had been practicing for 6-7 weeks by that point and usually played two games.
There has to be a way to formalize this loophole. CJ Carr went through bowl practices last winter after he'd enrolled but before the semester started. How would your suggestion technically be different?
Michigan had the same thing with early enrollees and bowl practices, but I am assuming the difference is that classes weren't happening during said bowl practices because the semester was over.
Second semester at Nebraska started last Monday, 1/20. This Tuesday was the deadline to add classes for the semester. They would allow anyone to enroll in classes up until Tuesday. Not all schools start on the same date. Not sure why it would matter that other schools “are like a month into school” for whether a University would allow a student to enroll in classes at their school.
Good point about ongoing classes. Maybe programs could get creative with the use of truncated 1/2 semester courses that start at the back half of the semester, or something like that. My son had one of those last semester.
Michigan has difficult transfer admissions stuff that has been true forever It creates disadvantages where kids they might want aren't options, and nothing has really changed in the 4-5 years since the start of the portal on that end. It is what it is. This isn't the main transfer difficulty. Just kind of a weird thing because of the calendar. I'm not complaining about it.
Michigan started this term Weds, January 8. I assume most schools started Mon, January 13. That doesn't seem significantly different? What is the difficult part of their calendar
I don't know. From what I've read from Michigan people, they've just said that Spindler wouldn't be able to be there for the spring because the admissions window for the semester is closed. I'm guessing the same is true with Coogan. It could also be an issue if he hasn't graduated yet because Michigan basically can't take upperclassmen players who haven't graduated because they have to take 60 credits at UM to graduate. That's an issue for all sports every year at UM that doesn't seem to exist at most other schools. It is what it is and doesn't seem to be changing any time soon. UM got a kid from Michigan State last year who somehow graduated from Michigan State in mid-December but was on the team at Michigan last year. I have no clue how that worked.
I noticed UMich charges a late fee if you register for classes after Jan 7. That's different; we don't assess any late fee for changing your schedule through the drop/add period. Seems like that would be easy to finesse but maybe that's a part of it. Professors have to love that -- your roster at UofSC is musical chairs the first week.
Every school has its own stuff. Some are semesters while others are quarters. Some start really early while others have January terms or whatever, or they start weeks later. Some are more strict than others. Michigan seems a lot stricter than others with transfers because of the credits stuff that drives some of our fans nuts, but I don't really care. As long as the coaches understand and accept who they can or can't get in and prioritize accordingly, there are so many guys in the portal that it's not really a big deal to me. Juwan had no clue how stuff worked and tried to take multiple guys who had no chance of getting in and then complained when it happened. Dusty May accepted what it was and found a bunch of really good transfers and made a top 25 team out of it. It's not that hard. And if the stricter rules keeps Michigan from relying too much on the portal and instead makes them prioritize HS recruiting and development, I'll take that trade off. I think the overwhelming majority of kids in the portal are overrated and aren't really any better than guys we would already have on the roster.
I got you. I work in advising/scheduling so this is daily stuff for me. Just providing perspective from someone at another school. Michigan calls this Winter. We call it Spring down here haha
