It’s so funny reading this thread because I feel infinitely safer almost anywhere on the north side than i do in most places on the south side
I think it comes from the fact that 10-15 years ago you didn't even think twice about anything crime related. So when you read press clippings from Lincoln Park/Lakeview shootings/car jacking/etc it feels like a stark contrast to how things were when I was a 25 year old jackass walking down alleys blacked out alone.
Yep. It’s all relative. For much of the 70s & 80s, Lincoln Park was pretty unsafe. Got much better in the 90s, 00s and 10s to the point you didn’t even think about crime. Past couple years have been bad again…but nothing like the 70s & 80s. And of course, even the “bad” crime periods in Lincoln Park have nothing on Auburn Gresham, for example.
I lived behind Pequods for a couple years. Its a great neighborhood but its a decent walk from the Fullerton stop. If you are set on doing that, walk a block south to Webster, stop in at Local Option at Webster and Seminary which is a great beer bar. It will split your walk in half and give you a stroll through DePaul on your way to get your pizza.
In fairness to this thread and the city of Chicago, I believe we gave you our advice and you ignored it.
not really i just had an opportunity to buy a house with 60k of immediate equity. I’d be an idiot to pass it up
oh hi i'm going to catch up on the thread but i'm moving to edgewater in 12 days i'm so fucking excited that's all for now
i'll try my best! i'm going to need as much time to prepare for winter as possible like, what kind of fuckery is this?
This is really mean of me, but I always get a laugh out of people experiencing their first Chicago winter. Especially you poor souls from the south.
This winter wasnt all that bad temp wise. Didnt have too many prolonged stretches below zero. We did stay below freezing for what felt like forever and the snow never melted and just turned in to gray sludge.
Besides the obvious stuff like getting a good coat , scarf, gloves ecf - gets some hand warmers to stick in your jacket pocket. I got some usb charging ones for a gf one time. Probably one of my more thoughtful and useful gifts Ive purchased. That is a low bar though lol.
The main thing I’d suggest as someone that’s lived in Texas his whole life is to spend the money on a good coat and gloves
my dad called me yesterday and bitched for 10 minutes about the weather and how he wasn’t able to golf this week. I listened then reminded him that golf season in Chicago starts in May, my mom laughed, and my dad just said every year I forget how terrible April is here
Hello all, hoping you could provide some insight. My brother went to U Chicago, left the city but now is back and since this will be his first summer not being a student for his birthday I’m trying to find something for him to do so he doesn’t stay in his apartment all summer. Any recs for festivals or summer places to eat, things like that would be appreciated
Follow up Lincoln Park question …are Ubers readily available? Have someone who hurt their foot so walking to the platform might be tricky.
i’m moving in today. driving my u-haul through almost the entire length of the city will be interesting
I don’t know how y’all deal with shitty weather for 5-6 months. Snows or freezing for 4-5 months. Then rain almost every day. Not complaining about the cold because I don’t mind it. But not being able to do anything outside for 6 month in the year is ass
Lake shore north to edge water shouldn’t be too bad unless you’re doing it at evening rush hour This is why everyone goes HAM in the summer
There's next to nothing left. I feel like St Louis preserved their world's fair stuff better than Chicago.
It used to be great when it was local but it sold to an investment group and the quality has tanked since
