What do you guys think about Old Elk? I have a chance to get a single barrel of their wheated bourbon but it's $105. Yay or nay?

Yeah 105 feels pretty steep for what it is.

I'm a fan of their wheated bourbons, but that's a little much. I picked up a single barrel yesterday for $79.

the high proof wheated ones are delicious. I'd pay like $70-80. And that's really more than I should. Anything over that is BS

 

Was talking to Maisano the other day and he was talking about how age statements are overrated. Some bourbon is way over aged and doesn't taste good. Gave example of some 18 year old bourbons. I guess I agree to a large extent. I have a 6 year old WFE that is delicious. But generally the 10 year old bourbons are smoother than something aged 4-5 years. I'm somewhat torn on the subject . What do yall think?

 

I’ve found the same general trend as you in terms of 4-5 yr vs 10 yr, but it totally depends on the barrel. I’ve had some 5yr Nashville Barrel Co MGP bourbons that have tasted much “older” than that to me.

 

Feels like there's a sweet spot. But older definitely does not mean better always.

I think blending different years is the way to go.
