Same, it is a lot of work to box all this up and print labels, and I think my wife may kill me this time if I had to take possession of all of these to go with the already overwhelming amount I have closeted away throughout the house.
13 year rye please. Guarantee we could get these sold between here, the River Roots facebook group, and NEBC if we linked it in there after everyone here had a shot.
The note about the IPA-like hoppiness of the 7 year California barrel is really intriguing. But I'd be interested in a couple bottles no matter what the pick.
He just got back to me and said if we wait 2 weeks (not an issue) they are getting in a brand new lot of higher proof 12 year MGP rye. I think i would prefer to do that because as much as I like the 11 and 12 years that they have put out from this barrel lot, they must be getting down to the bottom of the barrel in terms of people who picked other barrels and chose not to pick these. The Reapers that were great were around 124 proof. I am also really tempted by the malts. It's totally different, but that is what makes them interesting and the flavor profile is not something you will find anywhere else. I am going to put out a survey form shortly.
I’d be totally down to wait for new batch. I am not a fan of malts but would be down to try. Would likely not commit to any though prior to at least a sample.
Please put in your preferred choices in order. I am going to try to get 3 samples each of our first two barrel type choices or more if I can. Barrel Choice Survey
Offer is still open for a River Roots sample pack including hazmat 13 year malts so you can at least know the profile.
Not sure when it’ll be but I can keep an eye on r/OhioLiquor to see when 107 is out and grab one for you
Do you have any more info on the source of the Belle Meade? I know those guys through a friend who is their cousin, but I thought everything they put out as Belle Meade was MGP and their own distilled stuff was all Nelson’s Greenbrier.
I don’t. Technically I’m not supposed to know it is belle meade but saw a picture of the rickhouse and it is stamped on the barrels. I don’t think Belle Meade exists anymore as a brand.
I think they transitioned to selling all of their own distillate and to differentiate, stopped the BM line. I could easily be wrong, but I’d worry these were the old bottom level MGP barrels they decided not to use once they made the swap.
Cam from drums and Drams had selected one and then gave it more thought and decided the quality wasn’t good enough for him, so you could be right. I’m not leaning towards these at this point.
Thanks for putting together the survey. Very intrigued with the California malt as I'm not typically a malt guy. I've had a few of the 10 year beam picks (via Prav/Dream) and really liked them. As far as MGP rye, I agree to wait for the new batch as some of the 95/5s I've gotten recently have been underwhelming.
I am thinking I would like them to send me samples of the MGP rye and the malt if they will do that. This way we can check overall quality of one versus the other and maybe even do 2 picks. I sent them an email asking if they would do that but I suspect they will. Also Cam from Drums and Drams is supposedly sampling some of the new 12 year MGP ryes this weekend. I put word into him to let me knwo what samples that he doesn't pick that he thinks were also really good, so that maybe I can request those straight away.
I'm definitely interested to see what new mgp ryes they get. Preferably some that are higher proof. In my experience those have been my favorite of the 95/5.
He is going to send me 3 samples of the higher proof 12 year MGP rye and 1 sample of the malt. He said that if I don't like the 1 malt I won't need to try more. I am just going to ask him to wait a little, because I only have 7 days to make a choice and I need to get these to people to help make the pick so I need to confirm availability.
This is fucking badass. Thanks for doing this NYGator . I think several of those choices were very interesting. 13 year MGP 107 proof rye sounds phenomenal. If it was like 115-25 proof that would have been the absolute jam. But still pretty awesome at 107. Also there's something just cool about doing a barrel for our little group and messing with the labels and just the whole process. This thread rules.
Maybe you didn’t read the note…they just got in 120 or higher proof 12 year MGP rye today. That is what we are getting.
NYGator making big moves. While I’m with everyone on the rye. Don’t underestimate the potential of the malt. The older ones we’ve tried from this distillery have been off the charts good
If you need help moving bottles on a pick count me in. Loved the Baby Saz and Stellum Rye picks that were done in this thread.
This pick is going to be different (thankfully) in that we will have a password link to a store, so everyone will order their own directly and have it shipped to you. It will make it so much easier for me. It is also not clear to me on whether I have to lay out money or not, since they collect the payments, although I am responsible for getting rid of it within a week or so, which shouldn't be a problem for a pick like this even if I need to bring it to some of the other groups we are in.
Some of these stores in GA that bought a ton of inventory to get allocated bottles are going to be in trouble some day soon.
My local guys are constantly bitching. Legal recreational marijuana has also hurt them according to the store owners.
