That was when I got the Chicago trip credit card bill... by now I’ve forgotten how ridiculous that was.
I got it for 37.95 and I think that is probably priced right, but that doesn’t matter. You used to be able to get it for less so it pisses us off. (Especially Artoo )
Yeah I’ve only seen that in SC and Texas in my travels. Fucking Texas with 1.75 of OWA had me shook. When I was there of course they never had it.
Expecting to get my best haul of the year from 1 store today, hopefully at lunch. Will post pictures if it comes through. All will be open by Sunday
Question for the group, my guy has 1 bottle left of widow Jane 10 year, worth grabbing? It’s listed at $75
That’s MSRP. It’s always on the shelf, and by the logic of “if it’s widely available and expensive”...
I think widely available and expensive is probably the best rule of thumb for bourbon. The thing is, it doesn't mean the bourbon is bad, it just means it's a bad value. Whistle Pig is the best example. It's an MGP product, and some of my favorite bourbons are MGP, but there are NUMEROUS $30-45 bottles that are the same or better. While I am guilty of giving some sort of credence to "trophy status" of certain bottles, the availability of WP makes it a complete no-go for me.
3rd. If you haven't tried WT 101 since College do yourself a favor and go get a bottle....then go get a bottle of Rare Breed.
Rare Breed Posted randomly in the other thread at one point, but Bond and Lillard, an expensive Wild Turkey release, tastes identical to Rare Breed with a small splash of water.
Yeah, they're all worth picking up. Single Barrel is a bit steep, but the RR10yr should be in the 30s and it's very good. Jimmy Russell is the master distiller at WT, hence the name.
Russell’s reserve 10 is on there and has been. I mean the name is related to the master distiller at Wild Turkey. Their single barrel is awesome I think but probably not special and worth the price.
I’ve had Russell’s 10 and thought it was a good product for the price point at the time. I don’t know what it runs these days. I wouldn’t spend more than $35 for it.
I have been told Longbranch is also good. My only hesitation is that Matthew McConaughey reps it and the commercials are annoying. Rare Breed is one of my favorites. Fantastic flavor profile.
The person who recommended it likes Kentucky Spirit more than me, so I could see where it's not as good. Rare Breed is fantastic though.
Think i am going to pop open my bottle of Weller full proof barrel pick tonight and do a blind comparison with my neighbor between: Antique, 12, Full Proof, and CYPB.
agreed, it's really good very interested to see how it stacks up to the Full Proof. TBH the 12 is probably my least favorite Weller offering, dont get me wrong its good but i just feel like it has too much hype surrounding it but that is the case with any Weller product really.
I was going to start a discussion topic about your own bourbon takes that others think are bad. I thought I owned this one myself on the 12. I will fight you on OWA.
Bulleit sucks (new)Black Maple Hill is a third trimester abortion Van Winkle Lot B is overrated Legent is delicious Weller 12 AND Owa is meh to me
Overrated (IMO) Weller 12 - meh but will buy at MRSP Weller Antique - meh but will buy at MRSP maybe a little more for a barrel pick (i think Ole Scout 107 kills this all day and is only $35-37) Bulleit Larceny Angels Envy - way overpriced Basel Hayden Kentucky Owl Elmer T Lee - i see this at $150+ GTFO Underrated (IMO) Bowman Brothers Single and Small Batch Wilderness Trail BIB New Riff Single and BIB OGD 114 Turkey 101 Rare Breed Makers Cask High West offerings (i love this shit) Evan Williams BIB Old Scout 107 Four Roses Single (not sure if this is really underrated)
I will also admit i really like Blanton's. I know that it can be considered overrated by many and i wouldn't argue that it isn't but i just like it for some reason.
-Wathen’s Single Barrel might be the worst bourbon I’ve ever had, so bad I wonder if it spoiled - Willett pot still Reserve is gross, and should be dropped from that portfolio entirely due to grossness - Blended bourbons frequently offer the best of everything. More character, more depth, more boldness. I’d put any Barrell Bourbon blend up against just about any allocated bourbon from a single batch or even single barrel, and Barrell will win a blind test a high percentage of the time.
