Had a great first visit. Summary of my favorites:

River boat cruise, fan boat bayou cruise, Museum of Art, musicians on Frenchman Street (skip Bourbon Street), beignets, jambalaya, crab cakes, shrimp or anything else with grits (I found all the grits in town to compare favorably with SC standards), muffuletta sandwiches, Abita and Faubourg beer (skip the hurricanes and hand grenades), musical heritage walking tour, Jackson Square, Louis Armstrong Park (don't miss Congo Square), ride the streetcar to the Garden District

City is going to start filling up for Essence Fest but you'll probably be just ahead of that so yeah it shouldn't be all that bad.

Kinda depends on what you're looking for. More bed and breakfast type places in that area than big hotels. Then some super swanky stuff in old mansions and such.

We stayed at the Creole Gardens down there in April. It was quirky and fine and quiet. They did however switch the room I had booked to a different room. Same price but a downgrade I think because the rooms are so different. But my goal was to spend as little time hanging in the room anyway and it was Jazzfest weekend 1 so I can't complain too much.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm considering a trip Labor Day weekend. All the FQ hotels are marked up already but I noticed some nice looking B&Bs in the Garden District that were priced pretty well in comparison at what I would expect to pay on a non holiday/football game weekend.

I have extended family in New Orleans. Just like many folks… They are getting out. The random violence etc, is pretty bad. I love that city and will go to Saints games, but I’m not sure spending the whole weekend their going to late night concerts, etc is such a good idea anymore

Any good articles on the situation? I've been a half dozen times and always enjoy the city. I hate that things are apparently getting worse (obviously there were always challenges with crime before)

Pretty good article on the current situation as I wondered the same thing. Lived in NOLA for a few years while I was in grad school, got married here, love it still but yeah everyone I talk to still there is pretty fed up.

Comp to Chesa makes this obviously silly

Been to nola twice in last year, mostly the same. Friends lives and works there and dynamic is basically the same. Crime has risen similarly across cities throughout the country from Jacksonville on over.

I mostly just wonder if folks in this thread avoided the city in the 90s when the rate was higher

Or the three years post Katrina

Etc. Growing up in NY colors my view on all this panic.

Agreed that was comparison was over the top but there was a decision to be lenient on certain crimes combined with the whole host of other issues that have hit/were masked in NOLA in recent years have made it erupt.

I wouldn’t call the homicide rate this year “the same.” Granted it’s not happening uptown,
the French quarter, or hitting tourists so it’s not getting the play it should.

That all said, I still go 5-10 times a year and love this city. I haven’t had any issues when I’ve come in but have had plenty of friends that live here have (mainly car break-ins)

Sorry not trying to scare others from the city, Im planning on going to the game myself. It’s just frustration at the broad problem.

See you in the hammock district.

Eh the stats don’t tell the real story. Aside from having the worst local govt in the country, the crime is way different than the nineties. Someone gets murdered just driving their car on the interstate weekly. You used to be conformable around the park and certainly on a street like Audubon Pl… now they have issues. There have been carjacking in the middle of Old Metairie pretty frequently - that used to never happened. In short, people in the East used to stay there for the most part. Not so much anymore. Our police force is about to be nonexistent since everyone is quitting, not that they patrol places like the Quarter anyway.

Yeah nola obviously has issues I just hate these articles that overlook its a national issue that is happening across ideological spectrums or local control efforts

MY? meltdown haha. I told one guy he would be ok and had 50+ angry responses.

In the article that was linked above I was one of the people that helped form the coalition to fight the crime. I know all the data - but thats also why I was saying you can’t look at that to get a feel for it if you don’t live here. And certainly can’t if you’re a tourist once or twice a year

Yes downplaying the Roe decision the day it happened to the tune of hurrr nothing is going to change for you and saying everyone was emotionally fragile was an insane reaction for someone to have and throws your credibility on all topics into the gutter.

I'd be happy to see more micro data though.

I think the issue is more so it is becoming more prevalent in the safer areas and larger tourist areas. People who live in the nice out lying areas like old meterie are getting followed home and getting mugged at their home in broad daylight at gun point. In the 90s most of that violence was contained to the low income poverty areas of the city. Now that is not ideal, but more of the norm for cities. I think it being more random and happening more often in areas that were semi contained from it has people worried.

I'm a local. I've done the FQ for CFB titles and the Super Bowl. I have zero desire to be around folks who can't handle their drinking on a 3 day weekend. Not all places in the quarter are created equally (I highly recommend going to Peychaud's and The Will & The Way). But some spots are just a complete waste of time. Also, New Orleans is more than just the quarter. You can have a successful gameday without spending the entire day in the quarter.

Crime segregation is bad but I also have been waiting on most these cities to prove this expansion is the case beyond vibes or memory which are very very faulty.

Bayou Beer Garden will always have a special place in my heart. But Wrong Iron is where some of my friends like to go for gameday. Tchoup Yard will likely be packed and full of 20 something’s in the hot September sun.

Well Mrs Scorpio has finally agreed to go to New Orleans for the FSU game. Think I'm going to aim at booking one of the B&Bs in the Garden District. Currently looking at Creole Gardens, Chimes, and Garden District B&B.

Any #Florida State Seminoles got a ticket hook up?
