I could help you out with the al/fl gulf coasts if you’d like, which would be fun. But I’d also recommend looking at Fairhope and Lafayette areas to visit because they’re two unique places and because they’re closer. But not sure what your interests are
I’m not sure what my interests/goals are if I’m venturing out of town either TBH... just looking to do cool shit. I’m a fan of drinking and having a good time but if I’m driving and doing a day trip need to watch myself. I’m open to most anything really, the main thing for me is variety and trying to get a real experience, not some touristy crap.
Both Lafayette and Fairhope are not touristy, especially Lafayette. You will eat the best cajun food in the State.
Well I would definitely look and see if those cities interest you. New Orleans isn’t a Cajun area despite what touristy restaurants say - it’s 100% creole. Lafayette and the surrounding areas make up the original cajun area and the culture is incredible - many still speak French and the food is great. Fairhope was originally an artist colony and is similar (designed by same person) to Carmel, CA - if you’ve been there. Those may be boring to you, but there are a bunch of other areas with history and culture that are different than the rest of the country, so look and see and ask if need be.
They have 2 spots. One by Touro and the other by Madigan's. Their milk shakes are pretty, pretty good (hence the name of the place).
The Hotch Let me know if you do plan on coming over to Pensacola. We just opened a new brewery downtown and it’s fucking awesome. Lots of good places downtown and on Pensacola Beach. Whoever said Fairhope is on point, though. Probably a better destination for a day trip.
I live near the one close to Oak St. I almost went there the other day, but instead got a poboy from Guy’s on magazine which was amazing.
Zydeco Breakfast at Cafe Des Amis in Breaux Bridge, LA. (Right next to Lafayette.) Worth the drive, worth waking up early, worth waiting. An experience you’ll never get anywhere else and one you will remember fondly for a long, long time. Order the Big Hat. Thank me later.
If you love traffic and chain restaurants Baton Rouge is awesome, other than that - solid meh at best. I live an hour away and avoid it like the plague. Like they said - New Orleans is not Cajun at all, 100% creole. Lafayette is Cajun country. I've lived here my whole life so if you head this way let me know and I can give you some recs. I'm used to seeing it all so it's hard to give ideas for seeing stuff but a swamp/airboat tour would be pretty cool.
booked a trip to New Orleans today for the French Quarter Festival. went a few years back and loved it (the fest; been to NOLA five or six times). very excited for food and drinks and all that jazz
next month they will. not too concerned either way. it's fun and there's so much delicious food to be had. http://fqfi.org/frenchquarter/fests/food/
I’m off for FQ Festival this year and can’t wait. Only heard good things. I may miss out on a lot of Jazz Fest, but I had so much fun last year at the Maple Leaf for late night stuff that I’ll do it again this year.
Will be back on Saturday for the make up Dead Co show. Gotta decide where to eat. In December I hit - Elio's, 504 Craft Beer Reserve, NOLA, Cochon Butcher, Urban South, and Courtyard. Definitely planning on hitting Courtyard again. Maybe NOLA just because it opens the earliest of the breweries I think (they had some killer sours last time too). Got a recommendation yesterday for Parlieux brewing?
Sneaky pickle. One of the best and cheapest food in the city that just so happens to be 90% vegetarian. Also in bywater. Also Mimi's in the marigny has some fiiiire small plates. Do their 'trust me' nom. Siberia has amazing Slavic soul food. These are all marigny/bywater side of the city.
The gf wants to take a long weekend trip to New Orleans next month. Is there a page with recs on areas to look for an AirBnB? Probably be getting down on a Thursday and leave on a Sunday.
This is where I'd stick to. Left out the quarter because you can't air bnb there because.... New Orleans. There are some decent places by Armstrong park but the homes are older and less kept up with. This graphic kinda shows the gentrified areas of nola. Remember. Jazz fest is last weekend of April and the French quarter fest is in the middle of April so that could be something to come in for but mind you the cost will be more. Good luck.
Maybe not the best Bahn Mi in Nola, but the best Uptown. Hey so I was just in New Orleans for like my 5th bachelor party there. Best part of the trip was we were staying right by the Irish Culture Museum and realized they have a coffee/whiskey bar on Friday and Saturday mornings. The coffee was absolutely fantastic. It was a different guy on a Friday and Saturday but they were both great. Decent courtyard area to enjoy your coffee in as well. Highly recommend
I disagree about the location, City Park was much closer (selfish) and with shade. Don't cook. Fantastic day. You?
I much prefer City Park in general (much closer for me too), just like the setup of tents being closer so you don’t have to walk 10 miles. Also City Park was always a mud fest, but shade was nice. I’m not cooking, though I have the past two years. Just enjoy cruising around now and checking out the ridiculous tents.
Can confirm hogs was great. Wonder what happened with Karl Denson. Texted his tour mgr last night to see what was going on and she told me she couldn't talk. Was very disappointed.
Going to skip Hog's today and going to the Louisiana Crawfish Festival with my people in Chalmette. I've made it a point this year to go to festivals I've never been to and this will be the first. I'm going to eat the following: Spoiler CAJUN CRAWFISH ROLLS CRAWFISH AND CORN SOUP CRAWFISH BREAD CRAWFISH CAKES CRAWFISH CHEESE DIP CRAWFISH CREOLE CRAWFISH ÉTOUFFÉE OVER FRIED GREEN TOMATOES CRAWFISH JUBILEE WITH WHITE RICE CRAWFISH FRIED RICE CRAWFISH JAMBALAYA CRAWFISH PASTA CRAWFISH PIES CRAWFISH BOUDIN BALLS CRAWFISH TOTS CRAWFISH POBOY CRAWFISH QUESADILLAS CRAWFISH CHIMICHANGA CRAWFISH POTATOES CRAWFISH KICKERS CRAWFISH EGGROLLS CRAWFISH PIZZA CRAWFISH SAUSAGE CRAWFISH STUFFED CRAB & POTATO SALAD CAJUN SAUSAGE SUBS CRAWFISH WRAP FRIED CRAWFISH TAILS & FRIES ALLIGATOR SAUSAGE ON A STICK ALLIGATOR WRAP BLOOMING ONIONS CHICKEN ON A STICK CRAWFISH SAUCE OVER CATFISH CHEESE BURGER & FRIES OR CHILI FRIES BONELESS BBQ RIBS & POTATO SALAD CHICKEN STRIPS WITH POTATO RIBBONS WHITE CHOCOLATE BREAD PUDDING CRAB CAKE SLIDERS & POTATOES FRIED ARTICHOKE HEARTS CRAB CAKES WITH CRAWFISH SAUCE CRAB BALLS WITH CRAWFISH SAUCE FRIED EGGPLANT WITH CREAM SAUCE FRIED SHRIMP AND ONION ON A STICK FRIED CATFISH JAMBALAYA FUNNEL CAKES GATOR ON A STICK GRILLED LOBSTER TAIL GUMBO HOT DOGS KING CAKES NACHOS OYSTER ROLLS PHILLY CHEESE STEAK SANDWICH PIZZA PORK ON A STICK ROASTED CORN ON COB SEAFOOD BALLS WITH CRAB BISQUE SEAFOOD ON A STICK SEAFOOD PLATTER & FRIED ONION RINGS OR FRIES SHISKABOB FRIED RICE & EGG ROLLS COMBO SEAFOOD STUFFED MUSHROOMS SHRIMP PASTA SHRIMP WRAP SOFT SHELL CRAB POBOY STUFFED CRAB BALLS SAAUTEED SHRIMP PISTOLS SHRIMP ÉTOUFFÉE SHRIMP ON A STICK SHRIMP & GRITS SOFT SHELL CRAWFISH PO-BOY
