And still, worst case you go to OT @ home with the better team. Not to mention GB DL had been creampie-ing Det’s OL in short yardage situations. It was a dumb decision but it was an aggressive decision. Aggressive is fun so fans avoid their cognitive dissonance by telling themselves it’s an “ok” decision because they like fun.
I mean what’s the worst case scenario for blindly going for it on 4th? You blow a 17 point 2nd half lead in the NFC champ game? Doubt that’d ever happen.
well if he thought it was 50/50 sounds like he got the bad one out of the way *this is not how math works but it is as equally stupid as what you just said
Not understanding how math works and admitting GBs DL was blowing up short yardage situations are not equal.
Has the everloving football cunt The Banks weighed in on Dan Campbell yet or just football moron DirtBall?
Goff fell down and made that handoff by the matter of an inch and dummies still argue it was a good call. Give me a fucking break.
Like, I know the lions have never won anything ever. And after this year they’ll lose both coordinators and the run will be over. But get some common f’n sense, unless you want to have another embarrassing exit and give KC a third title in a row.
Citing KC is funny considering they've made a living off of being able to easily get a field goal with like 40 seconds and no timeouts for a decade now
I think the bigger issue is a fan of Nebraska and the Bears is trying to argue successful football strategy
Dan Campbell is super fun and an awesome coach but its ok to recognize he pulled the same stuff in the NFC championship game, it didn't work and it likely cost them a very good shot at a Super Bowl
Last night's decisions were not the same as the NFCCG decisions. And you can disagree with both, but they were not the same things.
That is valid but that same decision making helped beat the Rams to win the teams first playoff game in 30 years. There’s always risk involved but it works out for him way more than it doesn’t.
I'm not really criticizing but I do think the national media has given him a pass for last year amidst the constant praise for how big his nuts are He's got a clear plan in these situations which I can respect since my team's coach used to have a plan and now this year has decided he's just going to flip a coin and nothing he does makes sense and very well could cost them the 1 seed based on the Falcons game alone
Underrated note, with Detroit entire front 7 2 deep beside basically Campbell and Smith out, Josh Jacobs only had 3.7 ypc. That's either pretty impressive by the Lions 3rd strings or embarrassing by GB.
Campbell gets a pass because the media crushed him when he was hired and then they realized that fans liked him so they pivoted into him being the lovable meathead. He definitely gets more rope on this stuff than others at this point. Media and fans don't know how to judge Campbell on this stuff because all they know how to do is judge things based on whether they work or not. The reality is that Dan Campbell is going to go for it on 4th down at least 15 times a year when 75% or more NFL HCs wouldn't. And of those 15 times, Detroit converts probably 10 of them. They're very good at it. But you're still getting 5 times where it didn't work. And you don't get the 10 conversions a year without having to also live with the 5 times you didn't, and you can't just look at the 5 times you didn't make it without acknowledging the 10 times you did.
These aren't real numbers and Campbell isn't an analytics guy, he's just aggressive Last year's two point conversion should've ended this talk but since coaches are generally timid people can't understand the difference
Maybe but I strongly disagree that he made some wildly risky 4th down decisions in that game. Especially the 1st one which was the most important. It was right on the edge of a shitty field goal kickers range. It wasn’t like he was giving away an automatic 3 points. Probably 70% chance he makes the kick vs 60 converting. And the gain from converting was more than worth the difference
probably covered but haven't seen anyone address this yet. Did the Lions have to go for it when they lined back out there? They had used a TO right before that, correct? what would have happened if they called another timeout after failing to get GB to jump offsides?
Curious what you mean by not real numbers. Of course don’t know exact but you have to make assumptions in all those decisions. I agree the Dallas 2 pointer was reckless but that was basically they felt like they were screwed and just said F it. Otherwise I do think they take numbers into account even if they are just fundamentally aggressive
I mean they're just made up numbers. They don't even take into account the chance of a missed FG in either calculation
I think most of the decisions he makes are backed up by the numbers, but then again most of the numbers seem to always say go for it so it's hard to tell sometimes. The Dallas going for 2 thing is the worst side of him on these decisions, which is the stuff where he's just trying to will something to happen for his team instead of adapting to a situation. Thanksgiving last year when he ran a fake punt on 3rd and 5+ at his own 25 was another case of that. I don't think his decisions last night fell into that category, although the last two certainly could be described as reckless.
I really just think that coaches are such cowards that a Meathead aggressive coach and an analytics coach overlap significantly more than people are used to
Also the Monday morning quarterbacking that the media does the next day. You need a coach with a certain ego who can take all the criticism if/when it fails
Assuming one of his daughter's classmates doesn't out his address on the internet the next day because of it
I figured they were just going to try to draw GB offsides, then take the penalty. They were pretty close, 5 yards shouldn’t have been a big deal. But props to them for converting. They’re a fun team.
the fact that he goes when he shouldn’t makes me like him even more tbh. I like when coaches are characters, it makes the league more fun
