I’m so confused. I clicked on a link on the first page that showed a LeBron James dunk. People are paying for the video that I just saw for free?
I got in yesterday. It makes no sense but I have the feeling this is going to be huge. Like buying Bitcoin at $20.
This blew up in the past couple weeks. Packs used to sit unbought for weeks on end. I think they're figuring out how they're going to manage supply given the boom in popularity.
Is it only new highlights? I'd like to buy a gif of Scalabrine for someone for secret santa this year.
You will never know when the random base packs will drop. You just have to be online when they drop and get lucky. All the other drops will be announced ahead of time and you basically just have to be at your computer, willing to wait, and have some luck on your side
It’s honestly kind of a cool thing, it’s like owning digital baseball cards. I don’t look at it as an investment or anything like that more like just buying a pack of baseball cards when I can and they’re available.
but with a baseball card I physically have it and can display it, this is just a highlight I saw on espn right ? But I pay for it
A couple reasons I'm bullish on the model: Like someone said earlier, it does seem like Beanie Babies or Pogs or something. But we're only just beginning. Imagine getting a limited edition beanie baby and selling it at the height of popularity. There's a ton of room for growth here. As someone pointed out earlier, if they can get rights to historic moments, that's a huge expansion opportunity. They're also planning to release a game that goes along with the moments where you use them to play the game (more on that below). The MUT/FUT market has proved this is incredibly successful, especially among kids. The lootbox stuff is a goldmine, as are "unboxing" videos. I'm betting big on kids getting super into this as it gains tractions Twitch/YouTube celebrities. Perhaps most importantly, with an official NBA license, the NBA has a vested interest in making this happen. Expect TV commercials during the playoffs, in-game references to moments, etc. It's not just riding the coattails of NBA popularity, the NBA has a vested interest and has been very good at monetizing its brand outside of just selling ads on TV There's no app yet. I'd be willing to be once there's an app, this really explodes. That being said, I've only modestly invested so if all this shit goes to zero, I won't lose any sleep over it.
This is the same thing as a baseball card but instead of needing to show you in person I can send a link. Also it moves and has sound. I can google pictures of Ken Griffey Jr rookie year instead of buying the card just as well
They've somehow managed to take the actual gameplay out of video games with loot boxes, make the loot boxes their own game, and charge idiots to play. Some of you are literal degenerates.
Just wait for them to announce the next exclusive packs Not worth chasing down the base packs right now because of the insane demand
Sure, but how often do you get physical cards out and display them? This requires zero organization on my part, the card quality isn’t up to the card company centering the card right, or have any possibility of being damaged, and doesn’t require you to deal with a third party grading company. I have two kids, 3 and 1 years old. Physical cards would be a disaster with them because they’d want to touch, bend, etc them. This is a kind of fun alternative to that. Am I paying hundreds of dollars for cards? Not a chance, but it’s fun to buy packs of cards for $10-15 bucks.
There are a handful of CCs that will return good value, but you're right, you're mostly going to pull three cards that will sell for $1-2. The supply is so limited right now though, I wouldn't be surprised if you're almost guaranteed to make your $9 back if you manage to snag a pack.
Ur right, I’m just honestly old lol I got tons of cards on display in my office and people always stop by to look and talk about them which is what I find fun, if I had digital cards it wouldn’t be as fun because it wouldn’t be a conversation starter, no one wants to drop what they are doing so I send them a link.....but like i said most of office peeps who like them are old like me
This. But I’ve bought a bunch of moments. Isnt being able to own a serialized version of this that I can build a showcase around better than having a static picture on paper? It’s just sports memorabilia for a more technologically advanced ecosystem https://www.nbatopshot.com/listings...1ad2a7a9+8d5f8379-aa09-4bd1-9a71-80e5a606cb63
in the future you could have a digital picture frame that lets people scroll through your Top Shot moments
The real values still lie in Series 1 Golds. Plenty of players are undervalued as a whole with only /299 or /150 mints. My Ja Morant I bought on Monday for $4,550 is $9,990 low ask now. Several buys in between my buy and the low ask to raise the floor. The Season 1 Holo’s are even rarer (/49) but they don’t have much movement daily. Not many are going to shell out the $25,000+ minimum asks on those too often. I am kicking myself though for not investing in a lower mint LeBron earlier. Those are just insane.
Literally everyone in the world with an internet connection has access to this highlight - and even this highlight, as particularly packaged by TopShot. If you’re doing this for entertainment, have fun, as an investment, I hope you make some money, but the speculative nature of this is, honestly, some really stupid shit based on the most artificial kind of scarcity possible. They’re about to invent YouTube playlists?
What's the difference between the scarcity of NBA Top Shot producing a digital highlight and selling it as a collectable item and a sports card company being able to print as many cards as they'd like?
I have been targeting low mint Series 1 commons, which are all retired now. I'm thinking if this does become successful, Series 1 is going to be insanely valuable, just because the mint won't be anywhere near the later series.
i think the communication gap is NBA fans fucking around with this and collecting them for fun and the people who think they're going to get rich off these
I doubt I ever get rich off of it. And have 0 plans to actually buy anything on the marketplace...but buying able to buy a $14 pack and flip it for $200 plus is fun I do think things are overpriced and all the advertisements I've seen are look at this Lebron that sold for 100k!!! $5 million in sales in $24 hours!!!! Some peoe are about to lose some big money I think
nba is a sport with a billion fans globally. I think next edition series 2 starts to have 20-30k mint and will be much easier to get. I’m buying S1 where I can (I’m not buying the thousand dollar moments) and s2 LE. I also have some guesses about what’s going s2 Le in the next update
Like killerwvu said, watching the moment I was given for free from Top Shot go from a value of $80, to $150, to now $245 has been fun as hell. Seeing a common moment I sold for $55 two nights ago being valued at nearly $200
Just listed my Will Barton LE for $500 and I think it sells before the Davis Cool Cats challenge ends. Currently trading for north of $300+ - grabbed that thing for like $4
