I don't think the point is that he's not still really good, (He's still probably the best defenseman in the league) it's that he's almost assuredly going to get a 7-8 year deal at a crazy high cap hit, and that he's already 29 with some pretty significant injury issues, so there's a good chance that when he falls off in a couple years. he's going to fall off hard.
That makes a lot of sense but I still think you can find a place for a guy like him, a little like joe Thornton. He can play the power play even when he loses his speed
Since he’s an elite UFA, I think he might try to make it 11 AAV so he can be the highest paid winger in the league.
would make sense that he wants to be #1. But I got to hope that he'd be happy getting the most real money and not AAV which allows the Panthers to get a bit of a cap discount.
He’s already the third highest paid goalie, so he won’t go down I bet. I’m thinking he nudged ahead of Henrik. Maybe 8.5?
It’s stupid to pay a goalie 10 plus but price almost put mtl in the playoffs...and that alone is worth more than 10 millions We are fans so we think like fans but paying price 10 mill a year to make sure people are coming to the rink is surely profitable
Yeah, between 13-13.5%. I'm not predicting it's going to result in cups, just saying that that is, and has been, the going price for a top of the line UFA winger. Of course, the last couple years in an 8 year deal in this situation are almost always going to be bad. (Largely because of the NHL's completely stupid approach to free agency) Though I wouldn't expect Panarin's downhill slide to be near as steep as those two, as he plays a completely different and less harsh game. (Plus he didn't break into the NHL until much later than most players)
The Ducks made the playoffs every year of that Perry contract until this year and they made the conference Finals twice.
Evolving Wild has him at 11.3 https://public.tableau.com/profile/...pHitvsRateofWARpoweredbyEvolvingWild/CapvsWAR
You also have the most likely situation of whatever PEDs those guys take while playing untested to keep them young. Jagr came back from the KHL 10 years younger than when he left.
Didn’t benn just sign his deal and Dallas made the playoffs and made it to game 7 of the conference semis
Finally, you seem to take whatever stats that will fit your argument. But my point is probably the same that you are making. Having a few top players almost guarantee a playoff appearance and the owner makes money off of it. Nothing worse than not being in the run. People lose interest. A contract like the price one is not bad for an owner because price should be able to make the habs interesting every year. For a fan it’s a shit contract. It doesn’t help your team winning the cup
Exactly, and that’s why Colorado if they don’t fuck up should win a cup. They are paying a top 5 player in the league under what Milan lucic is making. That’s how you win if you make the right moves.
