It should be a suspension, but his foot is still on the ice at the point of contact so the league will use that to justify against one.

It looks like his feet leave the ice with the hit as opposed to the contact causing his feet to leave the ice. His body is moving upwards into it. I see what you’re saying slowing it down but that is just a really bad hit and it’s right to the head. Bennett might have it coming and that’s fine but taking your frustration out on barkov is just…. I dunno. If that derails the series that’s the thing you see in your sleep for years

also I’ll reiterate I don’t care about the refs call here. They see who they see at high speeds. Whatever. I’m only concerned with barkov’s health/availability.

His feet aren’t off the ice when contact is made, after sure.

It’s a clear headshot elbow with intent to injure, but none of that will matter because of an arbitrary skate still on the ice for a millisecond.

I don’t agree with it, but I think you’re kidding yourself if you think Draisaitl is getting suspended unless Barkov is announced out for multiple games prior to the ruling.

Said it in post above. To me it’s not a freeze frame but did you leave your feet into the full hit or did the hit cause you to leave your feet. I get a guys feet can go up with hits. This one it just looks like his body is going up and he’s leaving his feet on his own. That’s the distinction I’m making and not if his foot his down at first (which it is)

I agree this will be the case although I think he would get suspended if barkov is out for game 3 (regardless if he’s announced as out for multiple games). If barkov plays, Leon will too.

but I barely care about the suspension. I just want Barkov to be able to play. Couldn’t care less if Leon plays or not if Barkov is ok.

Trouba’s hits and attempts at hits were way more egregious. Draisaitl’s elbow is tucked, he hits him with both arms. The result is unfortunate but it seemed more incidental than intentional.

I won’t claim he intentionally hit him in the head but he definitely wanted to land something big and that’s the risk when you go in like that and have your body going upwards and not straight through.

agree trouba looks way more intentional

I lived through the Kronwalled years and the league made it clear that feet off the ice prior to contact = bad, feet not off the ice prior to contact = okay. I agree with you that there is definitely a difference between feet coming off the ice *because* of the hit and the feet coming off the ice regardless of the hit and wish the NHL did as well.

I think you gotta play result on this one. If you intentionally do something kinda dangerous that’s not a normal hockey play (even if the intent isn’t to make head contact) and it results in something that does injure someone, there should be a consequence to that. But i wont be surprised if there isnt.

Probably not (because nhl) but when the infraction is on the single best player on the team up 2-0 I don’t think it’s out of the question if they declare him in protocol or whatever tomorrow.

the fact that’s it’s barkov is absolutely part of the equation

He intentionally went for a check, which is a normal hockey play. It had an unfortunate result. If it was a non-hockey play like Trouba’s flying elbow, Trouba’s Superman-ing into the boards, etc plus an injury then yeah suspension territory. Trouba had clear intent to injure. Even if there was no injury I think that’s worse than no intent to injure and an injury maybe happening.

I don’t consider going hands/forearm first in an upwards motion a normal check so that’s why I called it a non hockey play. But I get what you’re saying. I think the drai hit was way closer to the super manning one that a normal hockey play though.

This is no where close to a suspension.

Someone punching the nhl’s most punchable face and people defending that punchable guy as a victim is wild. And Marchand was trying to deliver a delayed open ice hit on the play.

but people have their minds made up with the panthers. Fine. Win anyway.

Was just coming to post the same.

I’m sure most of it has less to do with understanding your own team’s situation, and more to do with seeing exactly where the rest of the league is at a moment’s notice. I’m sure around the TDL many are still using CapFriendly to gauge other teams’ cap situations.

That’s fine. Honestly I’m angry so if I misread comments my bad. But having any sort of “Florida fans can’t complain” I think is triggering when you consider the player hurt and the circumstances.

bennett can have it coming. Cousins can have it coming. But even with the hit to McDavid in game 1 or the Marchand hit- those guys were also looking for contact and just got the worse of it becuse bennett gets the most out of those collisions. Going high to barkov intentionally hands-first is just something that should be looked at on its own without the “but Bennett” stuff.

Okay I see your point but you're just angry that Barkov is hurt. This was not that bad of a hit. He didn't reach his hands out, kept his hands on his body. It's a perfectly okay hit. It's very unfortunate he's hurt but this is not even close to a suspensionable hit.

This is objectively incorrect. He doesn't chicken wing, but he absolutely leads with the forearm which makes direct contact with Barkov's jaw. That's the definition of a bad hit.

The reverse angle is difinitive. If he really kept his arm tucked and didn't jump, how the hell does his forearm make contact with the jaw of a 6'3" Center

Similar to icing, it’s not where you start your shot, it’s where it leaves your stick that matters.

I think a less talked about portion is that the blue line changes depending on which direction you are going.

His arms were tucked, maybe we have different definitions of tucked but they are against his own body when contact was made. How does a 6’3” guy hit a 6’3” guy in the head? Well it’s pretty easy when Barkov’s knees are bent more than Drai and his head is down.

You’re completely ignoring the other side. His left arm made contact first on Barkov’s right shoulder.

This isn’t what I would call extension, it wouldn’t be a hand ball in soccer. Extension is what you see after contact is made.
