If you can get Brayden Point for what amounts to Mantha, Cholowski, Veleno and Svechnikov, I think you do it.

I used those players because they were all first rounders in the range of where Detroit would likely be picking with Point on the roster.

Like others have said it ensures you get paid most of it in a lockout. I don’t think we have seen it outside or the larger contracts for star players. Stamkos, kucherov and Hedman are the only lightning players that have that to my knowledge. Stamkos has $1 million salary with the rest in bonus. Kucherov got some front loaded bonus money with a lower salary. I don’t think hedmans has it as aggressively as those 2. With the salary cap it seems like the structure of the payments and the taxes are the only 2 different variables you can really see team to team.

The benefit to the signing bonus is that it makes trading the giant contract to the Coyotes because there is no real money on the deal.

Nhl signing bonueses are paid at the beginning of each season not all upfront like the NFL. So the salary is still there. Only place it really helps is if the deal is done right after the payment date. Gets the acquiring team a season for free.

That would be the equivalency of picks if you offer sheet him. Most teams wouldn’t even have that success with those picks.

I’m bullish on Point though. He’s only 23 and he’s basically already an elite center.

The team that trades the player still has to pay the bonuses, or so goes my understanding of the rule.

In a straight draft pick Trade with Tampa what do you think would be fair compensation for Point (assume you mean Four 1sts not worth it)

    1 + 1 + 2 + 3

    1 + 2 + 3

His next contract AAV is going to be at least at those levels

Im sky high on Point but feel like 4 1s for him is too much unless it means youre locking him in for a ton of otherwise UFA years at a discounted cap hit.

Right, I wouldn’t trade four firsts or those four for him.

He’s a 5’10” 165 lb center on the top team in the league with easy matchups and an unsustainable shooting percentage. 56% of his points come on the #1PP in the league.

What would that take in terms of AAV for them not to match, though? 14 million? 15? It would probably have to be significantly higher than what Tampa could offer to get him to leave a team that good.

And then it seems like it would be brutal trying to fill out a decent roster around him with almost no cheap/good ELC contracts coming up and 1 guy getting that much. Seems like it would be Edmonton 2.0.

Screw us out of a good goal blowing the whistle early and a terrible high sticking call 5 feet from Tim Peel, what you'd expect from him.

Sure, it’s a gamble. I get that. He’s also only 23. He is still several years away from his prime which is part of the appeal.

I think it would probably take somewhere between 12-13 AAV. The Wings have Larkin at 6 mil AAV for the next five and then lots of young guys that will be on bridge deals the last few years of Larkin’s deal.

Plus we still have shitty deals that would expire in the next few years that would clear up room.

I’m not risking a 10-13M contract on a guy like point, especially when these next two drafts could be very high picks for Detroit.

I think Point is going to stay in TB fwiw. It’ll be interesting if Yzerman takes over on July 1 and tries to get a meeting though. I doubt these RFA’s are signing any extensions until later in the summer (assuming they aren’t extended before the draft)

Tampa is a good example bc they dont have a ton of cap space.

At some juncture a team would rather have the Compensation rather than the Player.

In all honesty, it’ll probably be the Jets that get hit by the offer sheet this summer. Just too many guys that need long term deals. I like Connor a ton, but I can’t justify that compensation for a winger.

Could see roslovic getting one tbh. Good player that is just behind a pile of other good forwards for ice time. Offer him 3.5-4 million AAV, which I don't think the Jets will be able to pay, and only give up a 2nd rounder.

Both, the compensation scale doesn't count contracts over 5 years into the AAV. For example an 8 year/$64M contract should be $8M AAV, but it would be $12.8M AAV under offer sheet compensation. So that contract would now be in the top tier now.

Only the year the player was traded because bonuses are paid the first of the hockey year. The new team pays the bonuses for the rest of the contract.
