I don’t understand the Hughes hate. Dude is 20 and is obviously not a complete player, hence why he saw no ice in the 3rd. No shit he’s a poor man’s Karlsson at the rookie stage of his career (53 points in 63 games is okay, I guess).

His PP footage from this game was dynamite. Get him to develop even a semblance of an all around game, and he’s generational. And fuck it, even if he’s strictly offense and develops that game further, he still is

 

The likelihood of him developing into a competent defenseman is the concern. Hes a specialist, and damn good at it, which is fine. But he will always need to be babysat. Nothing wrong with an elite #2D

I think Hughes will be fine, he will be better defensively than karlsson. He doesn’t have the shot that karlsson had.

i would compare him to niedermayer style wise, not as good defensively but a little better offensively.

my comment was just because that clip was nothing to write home about. It was very ineffective hockey play actually, you can see that his skating is elite but hockey is not a figure skating competition.

 

Hughes reminds me of Gostisbehere’s rookie year.

 

More analytics about Hughes being good defensively. He is far and away the best player on the Canucks at preventing clean zone entries.

I truly don’t know where the idea that he’s bad defensively came from.

 

probably because he is small and fast, he will never be a force along the boards but I never saw him as a pure offensive guy

 

I think perception is probably a big part of it for sure.

 

Boqvist is the guy that is hit or miss, that guy is awful defensively but has some upside offensively
