If he was on an expiring deal, he absolutely gets claimed. but two more years when he's been on a 2+ year slump at this point was a non-starter.
no shot imo. Knight is a stud, but a 19 year old isn't ready for the NHL, especially for a team in the thick of a playoff run. Maybe Knight dresses for a game to burn a year off his ELC as part of his agreement to sign, but the Panthers will almost certainly treat Dreidger as their own rental.
completely agree, maybe give him a game or two especially if you are locked in into a spot at the end but it’s not time to mess with your team. he should play in the ahl a lot
the issue is that the Panthers are sharing an AHL affiliate with Tampa this year. So starts are getting split among both teams prospects. Getting Knight games in the AHL is going to be tough. I think the plan is to just have him hang out on the taxi squad for the rest of the season.
Meanwhile Sens going full Sens and have had JBD, Sanderson and Pinto in contract talks going on day 4.
i think it’s a great contract for Vancouver. He is very very good, and he did not just all of a sudden get good. He was always a top prospect
Goalies are super volatile. You don’t have to look any further than Carter Hart to find that out. Going five years is unnecessary imo.
Money is whatever, but skipping a bridge deal for him doesn’t seem prudent. Especially when you consider this:
I do think it’s more likely than not that Demko provides at least good value on this deal. It’s not crazy to think he could become Martin Jones though.
Wonder what model he’s using for GAA. Most I’ve seen have Demko in the top 3-5 this year. (And that kinda makes sense to me. Vancouver’s defense is bad and he still has a .917) Maybe he’s using last year as well. Goalies are so difficult in contract situations though. When they come up at 24-25 do you risk giving them a 2 year deal that walks them straight to free agency and then they have you by the balls? I guess the way that I think about this deal is that you’re locking him in for his prime at league average goaltender salary. It’s a risk, but unless you want to play musical goaltenders every couple years it seems like one you kinda have to take.
Demko is listed at 2.77 GAA this season on hockey ref. I get your point though, but Demko has played in 62 career games. A five year commitment to a goalie with such little track record is terrifying to me.
i always liked demko, and I think it’s his time. i get your point, but i think it’s a good gamble for Vancouver and I would not give up on carter hart
Yeah his advanced numbers are very good. The arbitrators aren’t looking at those numbers so much as the counting stats though.
Ah, I see what you’re getting at. Not necessarily saying it’s a bad deal for what he is as much as they overpaid for what goalies generally get paid for/what he’s accomplished. I can see that.
Yeah I like Demko. I just think Vancouver’s salary structure is such that adding him at 5x5 is an unnecessary gamble. This further ties their hands moving forward. I mean it’s at the point now where if these guys aren’t very good - great, they could be the Oilers.
And if they are very good/great they’d lose them when they had to pay them market value. At some point you have to take a chance with the way the NHL is structured
Sure, I don’t disagree. But Demko has two months of great play to his name in the NHL, and he just got a five year deal. And let’s be honest, an NHL goalie might be the most volatile player in all of sport. Based on what’s on Vancouver’s books now, and the deals they need to do in the near future, they now cannot afford for Demko to fail. They cannot afford financially. And again, they made that commitment on a 62 game sample size.
Philly should be banned for a week for these performances vs Buffalo, who is already without Cozens and eichel and had just traded Staal
Colorado with 5 goals in the first 7 minutes against Arizona. Donskoi with a natty hatty in 3 and a half minutes.
Love Rhys. Always has time to talk hockey and knows a shit ton about analytics. Still pissed the panthers let him go.
Is Barkov playing tonight? And are the Canes ever going to let Mrazek play? He’s been practicing for like 10 days now
The Sens were pushing an ATO and he balked. Repeatedly. But they had to get him signed and he wanted to be here but wasn’t coming to play on the AHL.
