fair but the players are not happy with getting less money, do the nfl players get a cutback in paycheck? What about the tv money, are they the same in cutback between the nhl and nba?
Hard to compare NBA and NHL. Two different economic realities. Hockey owners are looking to play games in front of fans at some point to increase revenues. NBA can get by on their tv contract. That drives their separate decisions.
LeBrun Spoiler Sources on both sides confirmed the following to me: • The Jan. 1 start date both sides were clinging to is no longer realistic given where we are on the calendar. On Thursday, for the first time, the NHL asked the NHLPA about a mid-January start to the season. • A 52-game and 56-game schedule were both discussed as options Thursday night, but a source says the preference for both sides would be 56 games for obvious revenue reasons. • Training camps for all 31 teams would start around Jan. 2, although that could still be tweaked. • The seven-day voluntary pre-camps for the seven teams not involved in the postseason remains on the table, a source said. But another source said it wasn’t 100 percent it could happen, that both sides need to figure that out. The NHL definitely wants it. The pre-camps for the Ducks, Kings, Sharks, Senators, Red Wings, Sabres and Devils, under this new timetable, would be slated to open in late December. • Obviously, the COVID numbers remain a huge concern. As we get deeper into December, the NHL and NHLPA have to keep the door open for further delays depending on the safety of being able to lunch the season in mid-January. The pandemic could still force a further delay and start into February. • Sources suggest the NHL is adamant about wrapping up the Stanley Cup Final by early July, ahead of the summer Olympics. In part, because TV partner NBC is broadcasting those Olympics but another important part is wanting to get back to the normal schedule cycle ahead of the 2021-22 season. Not only is Seattle entering the fray as the NHL’s 32nd team then but the NHL and NHLPA still plan to send players to the winter Olympics in Beijing and therefore have to plan an Olympic two-week break into the schedule. Again, the financial issues remain before this season’s plans can be finalized and announced. This is just me, but at some point, over the next week I do think the players will finally come back and be willing to defer a bit more salary, but not at the level the NHL asked for. And the players will justifiably want something back in return. All things being equal, however, it does appear there’s a shortened season on the way as long as those economic issues finally get resolved and the pandemic allows the NHL to safely drop the puck.
I.e. the draft is a complete crapshoot after the first round and later round picks are worth very little, generally.
It’s a confusing graph unless you click the link he provided. What the graph essentially shows in your example is that the drop off in value from slot 22 to 23 has been larger than the drop off in value from 12 to 13.
this is why fans going wild over getting or losing a 2nd or 3rd round pick never made any sense to me
it’s about value, trading away a second round pick for not much might look like a great deal when you compare the player that was picked versus the player that scored 30 goals in 3 seasons and was a nice 4th line player but you might have missed on a big trade because that second rounder was just the little thing that made the trade not happen and another team with more picks get the player they want because they now can spare that pick.
Adding 2/3 round picks is currency to move up to get your guy. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Better to have the option than not. https://www.sportsnet.ca/juniors/article/longtime-bulls-frontenacs-coach-larry-mavety-dies-age-78/ Legendary junior coach.
i have no idea how these guys can coach junior for so long, it’s an absolutely crazy grind for older guys. They have all my respect.
I rode the buses for a few years covering the 67’s. Was rough some nights. My buddy did it for years in the WHL. That my friend would be painful. Kilrea would just sit there at the front of the bus smoking his cigars and drinking his Export.
the west is insane, these guys are dedicated I played in bathurst half a season and it wasn’t the worst but it was a lot shittier than victo. The trip to Quebec then mtl(rocket back in the days) then we go up to Rouyn Noranda and Val d’or, then Gatineau, back towards Drummondville and back home. It was a week and a half on the road, complete grind but some great moments. You basically spend 1/3 of the week in the bus. When you finally get back to your billet’s bed it’s a glorious moment.
The number of times that I woke up in the bus so happy that I got some sleep and then I would look at the clock and I slept 20 minutes and we are still 5 hours away. Jesus I do not miss that feeling.
Been a rumor here for a while. seems like it's picked up steam this wknd (bucs are on a bye so maybe that's why)
1st + 3rd? + a 2nd next year? They’re cap dumps for Tampa, but they’re legit middle 6 players. They’ve got playoffs experience and have won a SC. Seems like the kind of trade the Oilers should’ve done a few years ago to surround their young core. Plus, Ryan is coming off the books next year and Nielsen’s a year or two away two, no?
They’re both consistent 15-25 goals scorers. That’s literally middle 6 production, and they’re not declining. Killorn just had his best year last season and Johnson is a year away from a 29 goals season. Let’s not confuse their value due to their contract with their capacity as players.
Wait are you suggesting the Wings give up a 1 and 3 for them or Tampa send a 1 and 3 for Wings to take them?
I figured, thought he meant wings gave up picks for them and was about to rant then re read it and figured he probably meant that
