It's the high risk all out attacking style of forecheck. Panthers basically tell all 6 of their defenseman to always push forward and pinch at every opportunity. It leads to odd man chances, but the vast majority of the time it keeps teams pinned in their zone. It's a style that perfectly suits mobile defenseman but wouldn't work at all for the traditional slower defensive defenseman. Jack Han does a great job of explaining it.
The traditional slower defensive defenseman has been dead for a decade. Douglas Murray isn’t walking through the door anymore. Every team is looking for 6 mobile puck moving defensemen.
Benoit was signed as a FA for 775K after not getting a qualifying offer from Anaheim. He’s played two full seasons for Toronto. Are you thinking of someone else?
I could have sworn he was a deadline addition. Either way. There are still teams who employ big/slower defenseman. They aren't necessarily bad as long as they know how to move the puck. Chris Tanev is a prime example. He's really good for the leafs, wouldn't be so good for the panthers.
The guy responsible for those decisions just got let go so I’m not sure that’s the best example for your point. And it’s not like Florida’s group are all elite skaters, Ekblad’s skating has obviously been declining quick, old man Schmidt and Kulikov aren’t what they were 10 years ago when it comes to their skating. It’s like you’re taking Forsling and Mikkola and projecting it onto the entire D corp. Seth Jones has been solid in his lower role which I think everyone around the league agreed thought would be best for him.
The Russian players that knew this decision was coming had every opportunity to speak out against the invasion.
I dont think that would have changed the result. Also, im sure there are plenty that supported the invasion, some that are just dumb jocks that somehow couldnt speak intelligently on it one way or the other. And those who are against it and have families still in Russia cant speak out without fears of retribution.
Regardless of an IIHF ban, it is very likely that many of the European countries (especially Czechia, Sweden, and Finland) would refuse to participate if Russia was in the tournament (and the war continued).
Yeah, that was why the 4 nations was what it was iirc. Sweden and Finland insinuated that if Russia was in, they were out.
How would’ve 5 nations worked in theory and been fair? Easiest decision in the world to leave Russia out.
I do think Florida in round 1 was a different team than Florida in the ECF. If there was a chance to beat them, it was before they got the ball rolling. I’m still really surprised Tampa went down that quickly.
but still, this team is now just bulldozing carolina. Maybe it’s just the opposition but I think they now found their stride
CF3234 i saw a post of yours the other day that made me think that if the panthers go on to the finals you would prefer dallas, is that accurate and why? i would think you see Edmonton as a more dangerous team because of the elite talent while dallas is a little like florida but maybe less talented. my opinion is thât Dallas would give the panthers more trouble
It’s over, florida can just play their game and they will smack Carolina. I predicted carolina and I was wrong
sorry to bring math into this but I have Florida as a slightly bigger favorite v. Dallas (53%) than Edmonton (51%)
Also, had a convo with one of my friend that is coaching and played good hockey and he is really down on hutson. The narrative the last few years was that you need a d like him but out of the four left there is not any of these types left. I think this was overblowned because of makar, but he is not just a point guard type of offensive defenseman
Jeez McDonagh, maybe pivot from your random anecdote to make the call on the 2 on 1 short handed with Connor McDavid
I was just coming to comment on this. First time I chalked it up to just a misspoken mistake. But it's been 5 or 6 times.
Have no idea what we do with Cole but hope Lane keeps killing it so can at least have trade value. Our problem is left sided defenseman is kinda set for a while Chychrun, Sandin, and Fehervary is our closest thing to one of the speedy defensive defenseman that thrive in playoffs. Maybe take things slow and things work out because love the Hutson’s game Good talk, always love him but hopefully we don’t get crazy and hold on to Carlson after next season due to nostalgia. He’s still pretty good but abused in playoffs
he is always the same average goalie, if edm gives up anything they will get scored on. He is exactly the same goalie every game but the shot oppurtinities change is what I would say maybe we have some data?
