That's a shit ton of money that only buys out 2 years of UFA for a winger

Back to boring hockey in Dallas since Hitch is back - hopefully Bishop isn't a leaky sieve like Lehtonen/Niemi were over the last couple of years.

6.67 AAV is a great price. I'm less concerned about buying out UFA years and more so happy that he's signed for 6 seasons.

How much did you expect a 21 year old who scored 34 goals and got 70 points last year to get? I wouldn't have been surprised if it was in the high 7s to low 8s.

He was asking for 8.8 a year. It's a pretty good deal for the club when you look at what he did as a 20 year old. He's also a great clubhouse guy and they really want him around all the prospects they have in camp. Given the amount of quality prospects they have in the system it would have sent a bad message if they didn't pay him fair market value.

The only concern would be he's had one good year. Big commitment without having a long track record.

considering it only buys out 2 UFA years, I would have expected it to be much lower. Panthers bought out 5 UFA years with huberdeau for less money. Panthers also got barkov who plays a much more important position for less. That's just one team. Im sure plenty of others spent much less on a first year RFA that has had a similar career to Pastrnak

    What AAV constitutes much lower?

Barkov signed his deal over a year and a half ago so it's not exactly a fair comparison. It's also a good deal for you guys so if every deal is compared to it then the overwhelming majority will look bad (similar to the Tavares deal a few years back).

Huberdeau has never had a season as good as Pastrnak's so I don't know why Pastrnak making 0.7 more a year is a huge surprise.

Huberdeau's deal buys out 5 years of UFA instead of just 2 for Pastrnak. that's where the value comes in. bruins likely could have given him a 2 year bridge deal and still paid around the same amount money (maybe 1.0 aav more). bruins gave him full value now and that will likely be considered a mistake in the long run.

Did the player want a bridge deal?
Did we pay him full value now? Or is full value for DP closer to what Draisatl got this summer?

I just don't see how 6.67/6 yrs isn't a perfectly fine deal in this summer's market for a player winger who scored 34 goals while still missing 7 games last year. Bo Horvat got 5.5/6 yrs and barely cracked 50 pts last year.

Players are catching on and don't seem to be signing cheap bridge deals anymore. They happen, but you're seeing a lot of younger guys get big deals even when they have multiple RFA years left

yup. and the canucks overpaid as well. that's why they are the canucks. going back to the panthers, they got trocheck who puts up similar numbers to horvat for 4.75 aav/6 years

Monahan and Gaudreau both just came off of their ELC's and signed deals in the 6+ mil range. Panarin signed a 2 year deal that buys out 0 years of RFA for $6 mil per. Saad signed a big deal with several RFA years left. I'm sure there's many more examples.

yup. and the teams giving out the big deals are the ones known for bad deals. Ive been propping up the panthers but they made mistakes as well.

the whole point of signing a deal right after the ELC is to buy out a couple UFA years on the cheap. The dumb teams are giving out contracts like these players are a year or 2 away from UFA instead of 4

Well that's for 2 reasons, 1 they don't want their star players to get to free agency or get close to it and 2 if a team just offers him a QO you can end up with an unhappy player or one that gets offer sheeted. I know for sure Saad was going to get an offer sheet which is why the Hawks traded him.

saad was going to get an offer sheet because the hawks are hard up against the cap not because the hawks were playing hardball with him

If you want to call the previous deals bad, sure, but those deals being made makes it even more difficult for Pastrnak to be signed for fewer $ than he was. You don't think his agent will use those similar deals in his argument. And with it being an Olympic year I think the KHL threat was worth noting.

Basically it seems like all the deals you're categorizing as "bad deals" became the expected market value.

Gaudreau got 6.75 for seasons of 68, 75, 64. for 90k less the bruins signed pastrnak for one season of 70.

monahan got 6.375 playing a more premium position with seasons of 62 and 63 and I would argue that contract is a touch high considering he isn't a great defensive player.

the argument for giving pastrnak 6.675 becomes worse and worse the more I look at it.

The Gaudreau deal is a steal. I, and seemingly most of the media, don't think the Pastrnak deal is a steal but rather fair value. And like I said before these 2016 deals aren't as relevant because Johansen/Draisatl/Horvat/etc. have already signed for large amounts this summer (us leaving the Pastrnak deal so late is definitely a valid criticism). I'm getting the impression that you like to compartmentalize deals as either underpayments or overpayments.

I'll end the argument here from my side so the thread can get back to its regular scheduled programming, namely enjj anecdotes, Russian bashing, offside rule debates, and Panther game referee bitching.

Been a quiet summer of anecdotes but a new season brings new hope!
Going to be paying attention to junior hockey a little more. Wife's nephew made the Soo and two good buddies had kids make Flint and Kitchener. All 2000's and all D men. One was committed to Maine while the other two had offers, college hockey was not on their radar yet. The allure of playing in the O was too much. Personally I would have advised all of them to go the NCAA route but these teams are handing out 4 year school packages.
