Sure. I got a horrendous response to those posts but am still firmly committed in my beliefs on them. I have spent some time thinking about how to frame these discussions and put myself in others shoes.

I regret the soundbite in a dress comment but stand by the general sentiment that her policy is not nearly as well reasoned as it is perceived to be.

Only as much as the entire American system is on trial. You can look it up. Amazon consistently has one of the most favorable consumer perceptions while Comcast and other telecoms rank at the bottom.

If your true intent is to protect consumers it seems very odd to pick on a company that is so highly regarded.

That's fine and you should vocalize that, but you're basically criticizing her for her rhetorical prioritization choice as a way to criticize her policy or anti-trust regulatory desires.

If you don't think the government should use anti-trust regulations against big tech companies say that instead of saying telecom should be her center piece of anti-trust framing. Which isn't on its face a bad take but doesn't take into account shes done the work on that issue for years and the media wouldn't cover a Democrat going after Comcast with 1/10000th the attention they would if its angled at other companies for anti-trust regulation because telecoms have been targeted for decades. But this is more of a discussion of what is the best for her to talk about politically and what she would do if she won, I think this is where the disconnect is happening, because she'd do both.

The biggest arguments on this board almost always boil down to people not saying what they think but instead crafting circuitous and facile arguments as a way to prevent getting criticized.

So my whole argument here is that I think telecom regulation is the most important pro consumer regulation available in the tech space. It is also extremely popular with constituents as evidenced by consumer favorability.

The fact that she’s intentionally not making a point to go after them given the above makes me think she has some type of aligned interests with that industry.

The bold just isn't based in any semblance of reality.

And I don't disagree with the top either, we'd quibble over "most", but that'd be dumb to do. I think, like I said above, you're taking a high profile policy plank decision designed to get attention in an environment where this is maybe the hardest thing to do and then elevating it even further without taking into account her entire history.

She is not aligned with industry. She wants to break them up. She wants to undo their past problematic mergers. That the media isn’t covering that is confusing you. That she isn’t pushing that opinion forward at this moment can be a criticism of her campaigning strategy.

But I don’t think that you can look at the things she’s said and done in her career and come to the conclusion that she doesn’t want to do anything about telecom monopolies.

This is a fair point. At the same time she has a medium post ostensibly authored by her that specifically targets amazon google and Facebook and no similar post on Comcast. I think you’re right that maybe the media has latched on to this more than she intended but she started this narrative on her own.

With that, appreciate the discussion and you guys helping to fill the time before my next meeting.

That’s because despite “consumer favorability” Amazon and Google are larger threats to the economy than Comcast

Because companies like Amazon are now making moves to control not only the supply chain but products. They’ve eliminated brick an mortar retailers and are now developing their own products. It’s an insane amount of power for one company to control. There becomes a point where you need to separate the platform and delivery mechanisms from the production otherwise, we are looking at a point in time where you’re only going to bu Amazon products at Amazon locations

One of my friends younger brothers worked at warehouse here over winter break& only a handful of people are full time. Most of them are seasonal. Nobody gets overtime and shifts are like 4-5 hrs. Its a good paying second gig, but nobody is paying their rent year round.

We mustn’t attack or break up our tech monopolies who don’t pay any taxes, exploit workers, and profit off our data bc there might be a foreign replacement to backfill them.

The idea that a company can make billions and use all the benefits taxpayers pay for or paid the research for (roads, gps) and not have to pay taxes for its usage is so fucking wild logically to me.

Did you not read that Amazon is 42% of the e-retail sector which is growing exponentially, primarily by Amazon? Or that Amazon is about to overtake Walmart as the top retail spot regardless of avenue?

That also doesn’t take into account actual Amazon brands.

Maybe you could make a better argument that Amazon isn’t becoming a monopoly?
