Clearly the best time of the year every year. Nd usually hits its stride around march/April it's all downhill after that.

Just kidding guys, I still believe. But there is a bit of truth to that.

Yeah, but it would be maybe the most athletic OL class under BK with a couple guys that aren't elite because they still need to fill out but have the frames to do so. This is a good year to do that because there will be no playing time for them for a couple years anyway based on who's on the roster.

Congrats Wicket on the saints landing Lennay and manti.

  5. This seems like a pretty weak national OL class so I don't mind taking some athletic projects and seeing how they pan out especially given how good the past two OL classes were

Sampson has been beating that drum for a while it seems like re: national landscape of OL

Agree with this. Hayes has 5 star potential imo. He's barely played the position and is a top 100 4 star

LOL, dug deeper, those fucks are now complaining that the facility is overkill and to large. Amazing. Apparently normal students need more than the single hoops court at XRoads, and the 2 or 3 they are adding to north dome. Also, Brey does not need 354 sq. ft. for his office. jfc.

I hate that place. It took a lot to even go there to see what they were reporting about the practice facility. But seriously, fuck that whole place.

Practice facility is gonna be awesome. New student rec center is going to be awesome and even though I wish they put all bball courts in one place, they took care of it with the courts in the North dome.

Also, JAG (at our spring town hall) said they've yet to start raising money (that's obviously what these booklets are about), and it'll probably be 6 months before they get there (think that was even once the new rec center opened) and then it would be 18 months before it was finished. I'm probably screwing up even that "timeline" but the point is that it's coming, but still a ways away.

But it's coming and Brey can start using this in recruiting bc it will be done before anyone currently being recruited is gone. Can't wait

18 months? who the fuck are they expecting to do it? KFI could engineer that shit in 2 weeks, and their normal contractors could roll it in 8 months after that. The renderings mean it is already on path, so it's down to fine stuff for the engineer. And looking at that after being in Rolfs, it's cosmetic BS. If they got money donated tomorrow it would be done by next school year.

Like I said, I'm probably screwing up the timeline, though I'm pretty sure he said 18 months. Maybe from a our town hall in Feb considering we're a couple months from the new rec center opening and they had yet to start raising money. You'd obviously have a better handle on timing of that whole thing, so I'll defer to you.

It's all about the cash (wink) But just looking at the images I've seen, 18 months after finance seems off. We can build whole dorms in that time, and we can renovate whole dorms in 3 months.

He's in a spot to under promise. that's a bit of his job, but, yeah. If you or I dropped 10mm or whatever the budget is tomorrow that thing would be done by September if it fit the campus plan.

  22. I used to watch a lot of tape on guys back in the day and make expert analysis based off 2 min highlights but I have stemmed that a bit but out of the higher rated guys I've seen this year they either - 1) are not going to come to ND regardless of how good a coach/recruiter Heistand is or 2) are not as good as the last year or two. And that is just looking at top 100 guys. Not a very good class with obvious talent that immediately jumps off the film.

To move or not to move, that is the question. We have a chance to move from south to north today, Basically gains ability to see the video board, Most of our friends have already moved to the boxes. SO no real attachment, but My dad and I have both literally watched almost every game for my entire life (We were in the pressbox for one season). It's weird.

    BG Offense practice report

For the first time in 12 days, Notre Dame returned to the football practice field for the third practice session out of 15 this spring. Following spring break (March 11-19), the timing appeared a little off in the early passing drills on Wednesday morning between the quarterbacks and receivers before getting a little more in sync.

    • There will not be any quarterback debates throughout this summer as there was the year prior. Although junior Brandon Wimbush has made only two games appearances (two years ago) and thrown a total of five passes, there is clear demarcation from him in arm strength, accuracy and mobility from sophomore Ian Book, senior Montgomery VanGorder and junior walk-on Nolan Henry.

In basic passing drills without any coverage, Wimbush completed 18 of his 20 attempts on quick out, slant, wheel or corner routes, missing only on a corner to sophomore Javon McKinley and a slant to junior standout Equanimeous St. Brown. Sophomore backup Ian Book was 9-of-14, which included a drop.

Per usual, there was mixing and matching in alignment among the receivers. The first group to come out on the 11-on-zero team drills were St. Brown, sophomores Chris Finke and Chase Claypool, with fifth-year senior Durham Smythe at tight end. The second group included juniors Miles Boykin, Chris Sanders and senior Austin Webster, the first non-scholarship football player at Notre Dame selected as one of the team captains for the season. Senior Nic Weishar was at tight end. The third group included sophomores Kevin Stepherson, Deon McIntosh and Mick Assaf, while McKinley, who had surgery for a broken fibula last November, was not seen as much.

    • The projected starting offensive line remained the same as what it was in the initial practice two weeks ago. The left side is established with fifth-year senior Mike McGlinchey at tackle and senior Quenton Nelson at guard, with senior Sam Mustipher returning at center.

Although senior Alex Bars started all 12 games last season at right tackle, he was stationed at right guard while sophomore Tommy Kraemer, redshirted last season, continues to vie for the right tackle slot. Finding the two tackles to set the edge is a foremost priority for offensive line coach Harry Hiestand each spring, so the more Kraemer continues to line up at tackle instead of guard, the more confidence there is that he can handle playing in space. If he continues to be at tackle through the first half of spring, the chances increase that he will have that role. Meanwhile, guard would not be foreign to Bars, who started a couple of games there in 2015 before getting injured.

The second group from left to right featured freshman early entrants Robert Hainsey and Aaron Banks, junior Tristen Hoge at center and then junior Trevor Ruhland and sophomore Liam Eichenberg at guard and tackle, respectively. Hainsey and Banks switched positions since the first practice.

The third group from left to right was senior walk-on Sam Bush, fifth-year guard Hunter Bivin, sophomore Parker Boudreaux hiking the ball, Logan Plantz at guard and Jimmy Byrne at tackle. Helping Hiestand on the field was 2012-16 offensive lineman Mark Harrell, who started the final three games at right guard last season.

    • Maybe the most sobering part of the six periods that were available to watch were the one-on-one open-field tackling drills between the defensive backs and receivers. Using the sideline as the extra defender, the point of emphasis was to get an inside-out angle when setting up to make the tackle. The offense, especially early on, got the better of these drills, with McIntosh particularly displaying good wiggle on cutbacks that left defenders grasping for air a couple of times.

Remember the famous Vince Lombardi clip on the sideline in which he yells, “What the hell is going on out here?!?” and follows up with “grab, grab, grab”? The sophomore-dominated defensive backfield elicited a similar reaction on occasion from new defensive coordinator Mike Elko after numerous missed tackles in those one-on-one drills. As it progressed, it became a little better, highlighted by sophomore safety Devin Studstill bringing down McIntosh and sophomore cornerback Donte Vaughn setting up well to take St. Brown to the ground. On the bright side for the offense, sophomores Claypool and Stepherson also displayed some fine maneuverability in the open field.

    Defense

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame completed its third practice of the spring on this Wednesday morning, and it was the team’s first practice with shoulder pads. It also happened to be Notre Dame’s first practice since returning from spring break.

It was mostly an uneventful practice session, as the Notre Dame coaches continue to stress the basics of install and also the base fundamentals.

    DEFENSIVE REPORT

Defensively, Notre Dame began the practice with a “team takeoff” period in which the defense would line up, step forward at the snap and then sprint in the direction dictated by defensive coordinator Mike Elko.

Notre Dame’s first group on defense was the same as the first day. Up front, sophomore Daelin Hayes lined up at the drop end spot while senior Andrew Trumbetti lined up at strongside end. Inside, junior Jerry Tillery was the nose tackle while senior Jonathan Bonner started off at defensive tackle.

The second group of linemen had sophomore Julian Okwara at drop end and senior Jay Hayes at strongside end. Junior Micah Dew-Treadway lined up at defensive tackle with senior Daniel Cage beside him at nose tackle.

The third group up front consisted of sophomore Ade Ogundeji at drop end and classmate Khalid Kareem on the strongside. Senior Pete Mokwuah was the nose tackle and junior Brandon Tiassum was the defensive tackle.

At linebacker, Notre Dame started off with seniors Nyles Morgan and Greer Martini inside, with Morgan at the Mike position and Martini at the Buck positions. Junior Asmar Bilal began as the rover on defense.

The second group of linebackers consisted of sophomore Jonathan Jones at Mike and junior Te’von Coney at Buck. Junior walk-on Robert Regan lined up at rover with the second unit.

Running with the third group of linebackers was sophomore Jamir Jones (Mike) and junior walk-on Kier Murphy (Buck). Junior walk-on Devyn Spruell was the rover with the third group.

On the back end, Notre Dame started with senior Drue Tranquill at strong safety and junior Nick Coleman at free safety. Senior Nick Watkins and sophomore Julian Love were the first-unit cornerbacks.

Sophomore cornerback Julian Love continues to work with the first group at cornerback.
    Joseph Raymond
Notre Dame’s second group of defensive backs consisted of sophomores Devin Studstill (strong safety) and Jalen Elliott (free safety) on the back end and sophomores Donte Vaughn and Troy Pride Jr. outside at cornerbacks.

The third group had junior Nico Fertitta running at strong safety and classmate Ashton White at free safety. The cornerbacks were a pair of walk-ons, sophomore Temitope Agoro and junior Brian Ball.

    DEFENSIVE DRILLS

Following the team takeoff period the defense broke into position groups to work on individual drills. The linebackers worked on their initial footwork technique in one group run by position coach Clark Lea. Another group of linebackers worked on stack-and-shed technique with a solo sled.

One thing that is noticeable is the slim-downed physique of Morgan and Martini. Both are noticeably thinner, and both are noticeably quicker and show more explosiveness.

The secondary worked on their backpedal with position coach Todd Lyght. An emphasis for the group was keeping their pads low and distributing their weight properly, which helps keep the steps shorter and choppy. That allows the defensive backs to keep their feet closer together, which means they are constantly in position to immediately stop and change direction.

Lyght then worked with the secondary on proper angles when coming up to tackle, something that requires a lot more work moving forward. Following the individual period the defensive backs went against the wide receivers in a one-on-one tackle drill. Notre Dame’s offensive players certainly got the most of the defensive in this drill.

At issue for the defensive backs during this drill was poor angles and some uncertainty when arriving at the ball carrier. Lyght and Elko kept harping on the defenders to take an inside-out angle, but many of the defensive backs were either tentative – which allowed the offensive player to get past them outside – or they over-pursued and allowed cutbacks.

The uncertainty when arriving at the ball carrier resulted in the defenders not driving their lower body through contact, which allowed the offensive players to run through far too many tackles. It prevented them from playing with any power. Tranquill was the best defender during the group we saw. Vaughn also looked solid during this period from what I saw.

Vaughn is one of the most impressive athletes on the roster. He’s quicker and more fluid than he was as a freshman. Senior Nick Watkins also looked good physically, showing good quickness and easy athletic movement skills.

Notre Dame’s other safeties really struggled during this period.

Prior to the one-on-one period the defense worked a great deal on proper run defense skills. The defensive linemen – led by position coach Mike Elston – worked on firing off the ball, proper aiming points when engaging blockers (focusing more on playing the edge this year) and Elston really emphasized using hands. At one point he got on Bonner about being faster with his hands and leading with his hands, which is very important for up front defenders.

If the linemen were attacking the gap of a pulling lineman the emphasis was on really pushing their way into the backfield and blowing up the play. Elston also emphasized pursuit.

Senior end Andrew Trumbetti had a quality early portion of practice on Wednesday.
    Joseph Raymond
Senior end Andrew Trumbetti looked comfortable on the strongside, which is a positive early sign. He held up well during the inside run period, which is a big question mark about him. Today he looked good, but the key will be doing that on a consistent basis. Junior nose tackle Jerry Tillery played with some intensity during today’s practice.

Notre Dame’s ends, linebackers, rover and safeties worked on a run period that was led by Elko in which the emphasis was proper alignment, proper post-snap assignment and of course proper fits on the back end. The safeties had to know when to stay deep and when to come down into the alley pre-snap based on the alignment they saw.

Also emphasized was the need to have hard outside angles from the safeties so that if they don’t make the tackle they can funnel everything back inside to the linebackers and pursuit players.

    OFFENSIVE REPORT

Blue & Gold senior editor Lou Somogyi will have more on the offense, but there were a few things I was able to glean today from the offense.

Junior quarterback Brandon Wimbush looked solid again today, showing impressive power on perimeter throws, which the offense worked on today. Wimbush and the other quarterbacks were asked to throw outs and corner routes from the far hash, which requires a lot of arm. Wimbush was the only quarterback capable of making that throw with some zip.

The ball really explodes out of his hand despite the fact his throwing motion is quick and easy. Wimbush does a good job of using his base to drive into throws, which means he doesn’t have to exert more from his arm, which can cause accuracy concerns.

Notre Dame’s four running backs – juniors Josh Adams and Dexter Williams, sophomore Tony Jones Jr. and freshman C.J. Holmes – all looked impressive from a physical standpoint. Their footwork was good and each player showed outstanding quickness working through drills.

Quarterback and running backs worked on handoffs during different drills. Of note is the fact that the quarterbacks worked from the gun and pistol – which is expected – but they also spent time working under center. The emphasis during individual drills was working on the downhill runs, including the read-zone from the pistol alignment, which requires different footwork for the quarterback and back.

Sounds like Kizer had a pretty mediocre pro day. I really think he should have come back. I brought this up to someone in my family who knows someone who works with Kizer's dad*, and he told me that Kizer's dad said the biggest reason he left is that he didn't want to compete with Wimbush for a starting role. This is the second time his dad has told this person that (and I think the second time I've posted it). So, in the spirit of our collective offseason boner, I am pleased to present more material to be irrationally optimistic about.

    * Also, this person's best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with a girl who saw Wimbush pass-out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.

Asked Jarron Jones about the new strength program here...
    12:55 PM

After Pro Day, I caught up with Jarron Jones about a few topics, among them how his younger brother Jamir Jones likes the changes in strength and conditioning under Matt Balis. The answer was interesting.

Q: What has your brother Jamir told you about the changes here, especially strength and conditioning?

Jarron Jones: Things are a lot more intense. We’re being pushed, actually. That’s something I felt like we weren’t getting last year. We weren’t being pushed. We weren’t doing hard work. The drills and stuff, people could just get through them. It wasn’t challenging. I felt like he tells me every day is Camp Kelly. Camp Kelly is a normal day for them now. He gets them better, they feel a lot better. I see results from Jamir, he’s huge right now. I’m looking forward to what this season is gonna be.

Think this sounds more like an "annoyance with Kelly" problem and not a "Wimbush is actually awesome" thing.

Kelly made Kizer fight for his starting job in so many unnecessary situations. People were tabbing him as a first round pick the same week Kelly was benching him. People get fed up with that.

I think both sides are better off.
