Not sure what brought them to it. Guessing the dude in DC that got harassed by Catholic kids. But I literally have no idea. Seems like something that has been planned for longer than that.
By the way, we are talking about 19th century artwork commissioned by the founder of the University. I think the Knights of Columbus are getting blacklisted from selling steak sandwiches on campus.
I wanted to go with mock turtleneck Brey to honor the original groundwork laid but was too lazy with my Google images search. I went with the Brey that looks like he is sweating out one too many Manhattans last night.
so I didnt think the end of the saints season could be crappier than the end of NDs season but they managed. Done with football for a bit. Luckily the off season just started
No. It already happened. It was tongue in cheek I was pointing out the similarities between protesting the removal of monuments to the protectors of slavery to the dismay at covering 130+ year murals Christ-washing a brutal tyrant. Let me know if you have other questions.
My displeasure is more aimed at the refusal to address certain far more serious matters that have been brewing. But, I am also of the opinion that the murals being out in the open created a dialogue that wasn't happening before. There is offensive artwork in most museums in the country, but usually they are movable, unfortunately these are not. Your hate boner for me is impressive though.
That open dialogue that led to the murals being covered. We can have dialogue about conflicted historical figures like Columbus who are both worthy of admiration and admonishment without displaying pictorial propaganda. It's currently -8 degrees. My turtle dick hasn't got any boners whatsoever.
Gents, My brother and I are planning a trip to take my Dad to the UVA-ND football game in South Bend for his bday next year (he's a UVA season ticket holder and we all grew up big fans). Going to search through the thread (as I know I'm not the first to ask), but what are some things for us to consider, recommendations in town/campus, best option for tickets, etc.? I assume we'll fly in/out of Chicago and probably drive down to South Bend for the day, unless you all would advise otherwise. Thanks and if there is already a thread or something on a ND trip, my b.
Good question. It’s been asked and you would be tough to find it through all the pissed off rants. It brings up a good point that someone should pin it to the first post the recommendations. I’m not the right guy to give advice.
Your best bet is to fly into Chicago. You have a couple of options there, depending on what day you are flying. I would book a hotel or place in Chicago near downtown and either rent a car or take the South Shore into town. The SS runs pretty regularly in and out of Chicago to SB and back game day weekends. It'll drop you at the airport and you can cab or uber it to campus. If you rent a car, the drive is about the same and the only real difference is worrying about who drives but you can control when you leave. You can get tickets pretty easily and I am willing to bet they will be available around campus, but any secondary site will have them. I'm guessing this won't be a push for a sell-out. When you get here, the basic visitor spots are The Grotto and The Basilica on campus but the campus is really small and easy to get around. You'll want to check out The Backer because it somehow still exists, and Corby's if you want to see the place where the Rudy scenes were shot. If you are staying for food, there are pretty good Italian restaurants in the area, but you can also head back to Chicago and have a thousand more options. The commons are pretty good for a good hangout area, and I know that myself, NilesIrish and laxjoe always have tailgates where you are welcome to come and hang out or if you need a home base before the game. We can revisit this as the game gets closer, but hopefully, this is a good starting point.
How long will you be in town and where are you flying from? Chicago, Indianapolis, and Grand Rapids are all roughly two hours from SB. You also can connect into SB. If you plan on flying in late Friday, driving to SB and being there most of the day for game day activities/the game, and then flying out Sunday, I don't think it matters where you fly into. Chicago has chartered buses to SB on game days, so if you want to spring for that instead of renting a car then that leans in favor of Chicago. If you plan on making it a longer trip, Chicago probably makes the most sense. There is a lot to do on gamedays. Obviously tailgating is a popular activity and you will find ND fans are gracious hosts. A few posters here have regular spots. You should come and see hi. They don't bite. The grotto is popular. You can walk into and see Joyce. There is often an open scrimmage going on Saturday. The bookstore is probably worth a visit. You might time a walk north of the stadium to see the Basilica, the grotto, and the main building to end around the time the band marches to the stadium from that area. You can walk south along with the band, hearing a tune that will hopefully be played a few more times after kickoff, to the stadium and get into your seats in plenty of time for the game. I usually hit up the Knights of [Redacted] (just ask where the KoC is) for a ribeye sandwich. Pro tip - they don't mind you using their restroom, which has no line and is clean. Maybe do that on the front end of a trip to north campus. There are usually sporting events throughout the weekend. As a visiting fan, you're probably not interested in watching an ND women's soccer game Friday night though. During the game you've got to get a Ben's Pretzel. If you're lucky enough to sit next to me, I always buy visiting fans a pretzel at halftime. It's my form of evangelism. If you're driving, I usually park on Northwood Drive. I arrive about 3ish hours before kickoff and usually park around Northwood and Corby. It's super easy in and out.
This is really solid. I personally would do Chicago Thursday and Friday night. Come in Saturday, then stay in the area Saturday night. Go back to Chi on Sunday and leave Monday. Campus is easy. Depending on game time (most likely 3:30) get here as early as you can and wander. You can legit wander and see it all. You’ll be surprised at how small it is. And, as Beeds said you have several tailgates that will welcome you in. I’d go heavy on the checking out campus. It’s very different from the other places I’ve been but UVA may be very similar, heard it’s great. As time comes we can throw more detail. Most of us even have a good feel for Chicago. Tickets will not be hard. Vivid seats is the official one, but for that game you may be able to get them from the ND ticket office. If not you’ll have a ton of shots leading up.
The ND athletics website actually has a pretty solid itinerary of all the game day activities. Closer to gsmeday come back and we will post the link and give suggestions
Awesome, appreciate it guys . I’ll make sure to check back in as it gets closer to next fall, just was looking for some guidance to start the planning process—which y’all provided in bunches. Definitely a bucket list trip so we want to do it right
IU did something similar with some murals in a lecture hall that had been there for forever a few years back
Talent make up (does not factor in 5th years or transfers): 2019 team- 51 (4 star or better players signed) 2018 team- 50 (4 star or better players signed) 2017 team- 50 (4 star or better players signed) 2016 team- 57 (4 star or better players signed) - what in the fuck 2015 team- 56 (4 star or better players signed) 2012 team- 48 (4 star or better players signed) 2020 team- starting with 41 plus next years class- should sign 15+ ( 4 stars considering a 12-1 season). So 2020 could be ND's most talented team in modern history
I think you are taking one measure where ND is doing well and not another where ND was struggling. ND is stuggling with top end talent. Look at the 2015 team, ND was ranked 8th in overall talent, 2016:10 2017:10 2018:10 were all consistent and lower ranked. Look at the score 857 --> 842 --> 837 --> 847 and next year should probably be a touch higher although losing wimbush, dex, tillery, bars & mack we do lose quite a few guys on the top end of our talent chart
The 2015 team should have made the playoffs, and if Kelly was ever going to win a title at ND that would have been the year. I don't think ND will have that much talent again. It's insane that that team's best win was Temple.
Seriously parents. Haleigh Bailey? You really went with a name that rhymes like that? No wonder those eyes are filled with rage.
Hamilton being a 5* Butler basically being exonerated and the comedy in the mural thing makes me happy.
eh, hurt and REALLY young. Trust in Brey. I don't like the recruiting process but this team is going to be bonkers soon. Wouldn't be shocked f they come together and win the NIT or something. We all knew this year was a trash year.
Listened to power hour on offensive depth chart and roster. Basically their down on our offensive player development. Dont think our OL played well and dont know how that group is as good as they need to be. Won despite them (disagree with them somewhat), not impressed with WRs (my question is were a lot better going in this year than last IMO). Also feel utilization and development of TEs are lacking. Kmet should be better or produce more. Basically really negative feel to it. My question is how the heck did we win any games. These guys basically felt our offense wasnt good and dont see where we get much better. Not surprising from Mike Frank but somewhat from Jamie.
I do feel like our OL needs to play better. Do feel like there is some under development at TE/WR but the talent is pretty good and I feel like Hainsey/Kramer played hurt. Banks/Eichenburg first time playing college football we can and will be much better. Center is a ? But Ruhland has played and can fill in. (Who they thought was a guy who may potentially transfer if he's not told he's the starter at C). Kmet, Young, Austin and Keys (maybe Lenzy) need to play. Those guys are a step up in Talent
Why would you listen to Power Hour? Mike Frank is a fart that has taken the form as a quasi human being
