Driskell is clearly about a month behind on Keeley. Same with Hanafin.

And it makes me wonder if it’s actually our coaching staff not realizing the reality quickly enough on a handful of kids.

So the good news is that even without keeley and bowen this is still a well above average class for ND standards. It sort of eliminates the hope of maybe not joining uga osu and bama, but being the next program up

Seeing Bowen flip to TAMU and Keeley post a "respect my decisions but I'm down to a final 3 of Alabama, OSU, and Florida" post is going to sting the week we head into Columbus

I would not be surprised. I could see him keeping it silent so he could hit up a couple early games like OSU/ND before going public.

They really need a good edge in this class, if not two.

It had nothing to do with Jimbo. It was a direct message to his boosters that they aren't paying enough to get the top guys. They listened. Bama has been on a tear ever since

It's not like Keeley suddenly recognized that Bama is dominant in CFB over the last month or two. Boosters stepped up to the plate

I don't believe for a second that's the lead pitch for this group at this time. And there are still a lot of top kids in this group that a lot of the factories would love to have. Keeley's the one who hurts most to lose, but he's being lost to a program that has been better over the past 15 years than any program over the history of the game. The evidence still points to recruiting at a higher level than our old Midwest Catholic school grinders.

Hell, Ohio State's had a couple decent kids flipped lately. This is happening to big programs all over.

Keeley silently committing to Bama on his visit must be the worst kept secret in recruiting. Pretty much every post about him from any service in the last couple weeks has mentioned "ND commit who is strongly considering Alabama", the Hayes Fawcett "Boom!" post followed by a couple posts from On3 about "Is Keeley flipping?" etc.

It probably gives us a 2% chance that he hasn't just flipped yet in maybe having Freeman work something magical or sticking with us if we start 7-0 or something, but he's gone as of now

    Things I'd like to see:

Find two new edge prospects for 23 class
    Carr reclasify to 23
    Find (1) more WR
Evaluate and get another DB to visit as a Bowen replacement

Off Season- bring in a Portal WR and Edge

    D3 Intel on the team

I’m holding off on putting out too much until after the scrimmage. There’s really just not a lot I’m comfortable with putting stock in until they get through the mid-point of fall camp and definitely after the first scrimmage, which is Thursday.

But a few nuggets to wet your appetite ….

*** I mentioned in a post earlier that Tyler Buchner dominated the QB battle. From what I’ve been told by a few different sources it wasn’t because of what he’s doing with his legs. Buchner has really taken to the offense and is showing great command, which backed up our summer intel. He’s been aggressive throwing the ball and his deep ball has really taken a jump forward. He’s also more comfortable with his mechanics and his footwork has become a lot more consistent. His accuracy issues from a year ago, when they did flare up, were about his feet not being in good position and his release point would get out of whack. He limited that more over the summer and it’s improved even more in fall camp.

*** Two backs that continue to get rave reviews are Chris Tyree and Audric Estime. Tyree has made plays in the run and pass game, and his speed is back after battling injuries last season. Estime has had a really, really good fall camp so far. He’s not only a hammer but he’s really making a lot of plays with his eyes and feet.

*** Freshman WR Tobias Merriweather continues to come along steadily. He’s not forcing himself into a starting role yet, which was expected, but he’s steadily improved I’m told, which is a good sign. You don’t want to see the flashy days surrounded by the bad days. He’s still working through freshman stuff (missing assignments, thinking too much, etc) but he gets better every day.

*** Two tight ends I keep hearing about are Cane Berrong and Holden Staes. Berrong is still not fully back and can’t block yet, but he’s making plays in the pass game and his speed has impressed. Staes has been really, really good in the pass game so far. We all know about Eli Raridon, and he’s still working back to full speed as well and I’m told there’s no doubt he plays, but as I reported this summer, Staes is going to play this year as well. He’s really athletic. I know that Kevin Bauman is getting a lot of second team reps, but I haven’t heard much about him. It doesn’t mean he’s not doing well, and the fact he still is getting second team reps says he’s doing some good things, but I just haven’t heard anything.

*** RT Blake Fisher has been a bit up and down at times but when he’s on he has been really, really good so far. Left tackle Joe Alt has gotten punched in the mouth a few times (figuratively) and he’s gotten a bit feisty in response. I actually like that about him. The offensive line got bullied by the defensive line last year, and they just took it. I remember hearing things like, “They don’t have any fight.” The last couple days I’m told they’ve had some dust ups between the OL and DL, and they’ve gotten aggressive. Now look, I’m not a fan of fighting in practice. I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world but I’m just not a fan. Having said that, I’m glad to hear the OL is showing a lot of fight this year. Another thing I’m told is what Sean wrote about yesterday, the OL wins some battles, the DL wins some battles, but the OL is battling, and that’s the key. At the very least the mentality is 180 degrees different.

*** Overall I’m told the defense is still ahead of the offense, which is to be expected this early in fall camp. The offense has their moments, especially in some 7-on-7 stuff and in the run game, but the D is still a bit ahead right now.

*** Freshman rover Jaylen Sneed is starting to splash. His confidence has gotten better and better and when he knows what to do he is impressive.

*** I was told Blake Grupe nailed a 53 and 45-yard field goal today in key situations.

    D3 Recruiting

Just a few recruiting tidbits to share ….

*** On Keon Keeley, here is basically where things are. Spoke with folks on both sides of this tonight and right now Keon has not made any decisions. The decision that needs to be made, however, is whether or not he’s going to take official visits, and if he’s willing to stay committed while doing so. Notre Dame’s stance is this, if Keon takes officials they will need to start recruiting other players in case he goes somewhere else, but Notre Dame is not going to force Keon to de-commit. If Keon decides to de-commit that’s his decision, and says a lot about where things stand. At this point official visits are likely going to happen, but according to a source on Keon’s side it’s not 100% decided, no matter what is liked or said on Twitter. According to sources that I spoke with within the last hour he hasn’t made a decision on either topic right now, but I do expect him to take visits at this point. I’ll have more on this once he makes a final decision, but that’s the focus right now for him.

*** Based on the intel I got this evening after the initial update was posted, I do think Keon will make a decision in the very, very near future. It’s going to be a bumpy ride, but he still very much loves Notre Dame, going to be an interesting fall.

*** Sources on both sides of this recruitment also still consider Notre Dame the clear leader for St. Louis running back Jeremiyah Love. Texas A&M is throwing some big money offers at him, but right now Love remains really, really high on Notre Dame.

*** Expect California wide receiver Taeshaun Lyons to visit for the Notre Dame vs. California game. Notre Dame is high on Lyons and has been on him for some time, but Hanafin had the last spot locked up. As soon as Hanafin decided on Clemson (which didn’t happen today, he just announced today) they immediately went to Lyons. This was not a situation where Notre Dame was left scrambling when things went south with Hanafin. Notre Dame also recruited Malachi Riley, another California wideout, but right now Lyons is the higher priority. If things go well during the visit I would expect his recruitment to wrap up soon.

    D3 on Hanafin

Hanafin was the last dancing gif, but obviously things didn’t work out that way. It’s quite an interesting back story, so here goes.

For one, Hanafin didn’t tell Notre Dame officially that he was committed during his official visit, he said he wanted to finish his visits, but I had multiple sources tell me that he did tell coaches, other recruits and others on the visit that Notre Dame was going to be the pick.

During the week after his visit I spoke with someone very close to Hanafin’s recruitment, very close, and that person told me that Hanafin had made a decision. He was going to commit to Notre Dame, he was happy about it and the family was excited about it. But he wasn’t going to go public until after the Alabama and BC visits, which were coming up over the next two weeks.

At that point Notre Dame viewed Hanafin as a silent commit.

After his visits were over the story out of the Hanafin camp was the same. Notre Dame was the pick, just needed to figure a couple of things out. I was even told at that time that he would go public with his announcement in either late June or early July. As we got into July, Hanafin started second guessing his decision a bit. At that point I started hearing things I had never heard before.

Marcus Freeman and Tommy Rees primarily handled Hanafin’s recruitment, and Chansi Stuckey wasn’t quite as involved. That was due mainly to the fact that you already had the head coach and OC involved. Don’t get me wrong, Stuckey was involved, but having Freeman and Rees so high on Hanafin it allowed Stuckey to focus on other players, and helped ND close out on Greathouse and convince Greathouse to jump on board, and to close on Cam Williams in the 2024 class.

In July I started hearing some things about Hanafin not being sure where he was on the priority list at WR, especially for Stuckey. Notre Dame kept reassuring him that he was a priority and a major want, but for some reason Hanafin just kept letting that creep into his mind. Then I stared hearing things like, “No, Notre Dame is still the pick, but he’s just having a hard time saying no to Clemson.” Hanafin loved Dabo Sweeney, and he really connected with the WR coach at Clemson in a way that he never did with Stuckey.

As this dragged on even more Hanafin went really quiet, even on Notre Dame. The staff was trying to get with him to continue reassuring him but they couldn’t connect with him as easily. At that point there were major concerns that he had changed his mind.

When I dropped the update on him a couple of weeks ago the intel I got was that he had talked with Freeman and the impression the ND staff got was that Hanafin was back on board. Literally within a week of that conversation he had called Clemson and told them he was committing to them.

I honestly don’t know what happened with Hanafin, or why he could just never pull the trigger. I was told beyond the comments I alluded to above, I had another source tell me that Hanafin had picked up the phone several times to commit to Notre Dame officially, and to end his recruitment, but he just couldn’t say no to Clemson.

    So that’s the back story.

Guys Loy thinks ND leads for

Let’s take a look at 5 names on offense in the class of 2024 that I could potentially predict to land at Notre Dame on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

    Four-star running back Aneyas Williams

Notre Dame impressed the Hannibal (Mo.) high school four-star running back when he was in South Bend for camp. Since then, the staff has been showing him a ton of love and staying active with his recruitment. There are plenty of others still in play, but it seems clear that Notre Dame is a top contender for the 5-10, 195-pounder and he has a ton of interest in the Irish.

    Five-star receiver Ryan Wingo

Notre Dame has done extremely well with the 6-2, 198-pounder from St. Louis (Mo.) University School. Tommy Rees, Chansi Stuckey and Marcus Freeman have Wingo feeling very good about the Fighting Irish. I think the big selling point about Notre Dame right now on the field is his relationship with five-star quarterback commit CJ Carr. The two hit it off early and that relationship gives them an edge here. This one has a long way to go though.

    Four-star receiver Mylan Graham

I believe Notre Dame is the team to beat for the 6-0, 170-pounder from New Haven (Ind.) high school. A Top100 talent per 247Sports, Graham loved his trips to check out the Fighting Irish this offseason. As long as things continue to move in the right direction and Notre Dame pushes harder as the recruitment gets deeper, I like them to land Graham.

    Four-star receiver Emmett Mosley

It’s easy to see why Notre Dame feels good about its chances with the 6-0, 175-pounder from Santa Margarita Catholic in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. His parents attended Notre Dame, and the school and program have done nothing but impress the entire family during Mosley’s recruiting process. I like Chansi Stuckey to get this one done, but I’m not ready to go all-in with the Crystal Ball pick quite yet.

    4COMMENTS
    Four-star tight end Brady Prieskorn

When the 6-6, 215-pounder from Adams high school in Rochester, Mich., was on campus for camp this offseason, I got the vibe that Notre Dame was in a great spot for Prieskorn. As long as the Irish make him a priority, I absolutely believe the staff can get it done. He seems to have a great deal of interest in Notre Dame and enjoyed working with Gerad Parker. Let’s see if the Irish can take things up a notch this fall.
