I think anytime you can get a guy named Amorion from Louisiana that it’s a good move to make.

But hell ND is gonna take 3 WR's, all of them are gonna be 3 stars so Copeland probably still has a spot

I've heard today he is more like 6'5", still under 200lbs, and self reported a 4.56 so he's likely a 4.6 or so. A kid like him can change a lot between now and college though, so who knows.

Ian Book on Notre Dame’s next leaders, the NFL Draft and his final year in South Bend
    [IMG]
    By Pete Sampson 2h ago[IMG] 3 [IMG]
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Ian Book will be back at Notre Dame next week to get an early jump on his pro day, set for March 31. With the NFL combine gone virtual, his return to South Bend will be Book’s last best chance to make a statement about his next-level potential, building on what he showed at the Senior Bowl in January.

The winningest quarterback in Notre Dame history talked to The Athletic about his draft process, what advice he’d give grad transfer Jack Coan, how he sees Brendon Clark and Drew Pyne after last season, and what’s next for the Irish offense under Tommy Rees. Book also talked about what name, image and likeness rule changes might have meant during his Notre Dame career and what it’s like to have the NCAA removed from his outlook.

When you went down to the Senior Bowl in January and your experience there — you show up with 35 starts at Notre Dame where everybody watches everything. Yet it seemed like you still got a chance to show some new things. What did you get out of that week?

People just wanted to see me compete. They know Notre Dame competed at the highest level, but they probably just wanted to see me compete against the best of the best, just like they did with everybody else there. They probably wanted to see me lead a team and learn an NFL playbook in three days. That’s probably what they wanted to see. A lot of teams were telling me how I can command the huddle and take advantage of limited practice reps. I was able to do that and win Practice Player of the Week, so that was really the main thing that I was trying to do. They didn’t tell me any specifics in terms of like mechanics or anything. A lot of them said that I was fortunate enough to play under Coach Rees and be under center a little more than some people. They said I already felt comfortable. They weren’t too worried. Whereas a lot of other QBs, they wanted to see them under center for the first time.

Was there a football IQ element to it to where they give you the playbook and expect you to learn it overnight?

Oh, yeah, 100 percent. They gave it to us at like 5 p.m., but then we had NFL meetings until 11:30, so they knew we couldn’t study until midnight. And then breakfast is at 6:30. They did that on purpose. And then they installed a ton of plays on Day One just to see what you can handle.

How challenging or not was that for you? I don’t really have a sense of, whether it’s Tommy Rees and Chip Long running the offense, how much is in every week.

Definitely a lot with Coach Rees. He trusted me. And honestly, it didn’t really matter. Coach Rees is that kind of way. If he thinks something’s gonna work, he’s gonna put it in. It’s my job to know it. Learning under him helped me. It was definitely challenging. I don’t think anyone’s gonna tell you it was easy. All football plays are similar, but they’re all called in a different way. So they’re running plays that we run, but it’s just said differently. So you’ve got to retrain your mind to say it the right way. Some offenses are two words long. Luckily, Coach Rees has an NFL-style verbiage offense. So it’s very similar, which was really helpful. So I felt confident.

When you’re talking to these teams, what matters to them? When you were here we talked a lot about you going 30-5 as a starter. That matters at Notre Dame. Does that matter to NFL teams?

They say it matters. But I’ve seen stuff before where it’s like some people will say it doesn’t matter because it’s the team win and you could be on a good team. But every scout I’ve talked to says, “You know how to win.” I don’t know how much weight that really has on certain things. But it sure seems like it matters. And it’s playing at Notre Dame, being the quarterback at Notre Dame, being a two-time captain, going to the Playoff twice and never losing at home matters. People bring that up. So that’s good to know, I guess.

I was interested about the Notre Dame aspect of it, not just the football and the pressure and sort of the exposure. There’s a lot to take care of off the field, too. Do you get a sense of how different that experience is to other places from talking to other players at the Senior Bowl?

That’s true. It’s sad, but it’s true. I can’t speak because I never went to those schools, but you know who they are and it’s exactly what you think. Like, when I would explain Notre Dame to these people and explain the classes, and no exceptions and doing exactly what everybody else does and graduating early, they were like, wow. It’s definitely different. The guy from Stanford can relate and the guy from Duke can relate, but it’s a whole different ball game from other places you know.

I wondered how much that matters for the NFL teams. If you’re not on your business at Notre Dame, there’s not a lot of hand-holding after your freshman year. But in the NFL, there’s no one to hold your hand. It’s business.

I think it does (matter). A lot of people will joke, “Oh you’re from Notre Dame, you’ll figure it out,” or “You’re from Notre Dame, you got it. You’ll be fine.” At the same time, film is your resume. And I know a lot of coaches (who believe) if you’re good, but don’t do much right the other way (off the field), they’ll get you figured out.

When it gets to the film parts of evaluating you, do teams spend more time on North Carolina and Clemson Part One? Or do they spend more time on Clemson Part Two and Alabama?

The teams I’ve met with, I’ve probably seen every game we’ve played so far with all the teams. They have a certain cut-up obviously, like three picks and then three good plays. Then you explain them. But I’ve seen both Clemson games. I haven’t seen the Alabama game yet. But I’ve seen everything else. It just depends. I don’t know if it really has a certain meaning to it.

When you mentioned the concept of “being a pro,” I wanted to ask about your experience last year as a fifth-year when you were sort of a pro but still in college. The academic load is different, and I remember talking to Drue Tranquill about how much more time there was for treatment and film study. How much of a difference did that make for you?

Huge difference. I was taking three classes that I got to pick. And I was a non-degree-seeking fifth year, I was basically just doing football. My whole mind was every day, how can I get better mentally for football? How can I get my body better? How can I learn football? That’s it. Every day. So it was a whole year of acting as a pro. So it’s night-and-day different.

I remember my sophomore year, I had to take Finance, Accounting and Marketing, and Management in the same semester while this season was going on. There’s no extra time to go hop in the ice tub. Zero. No extra to study your playbook. You’ve got a finance exam tomorrow you have to pass to get credit for the class. The freshman year is hard, it’s college. But that sophomore year when you declare a major, it’s no joke.

You had time to grow into a leadership role here, from the Citrus Bowl through the end. Now Jack Coan comes in from Wisconsin and has to be like Ben Skowronek but also do it at quarterback, which feels a little complicated. What advice would you have for Coan?

That’s a good point with the Ben Skowronek thing. I didn’t even think about it that way. But that makes sense. Because being so close with Ben, he became a great leader. But he even told me before, there’s that certain awkward spot, like, “I want to be a leader, but I just got here, too. I don’t want to rub anybody the wrong way.” But at the same time, you just got to do that. And especially if you want to own that room, and that’s what Ben ended up doing. And it worked for him. I really imagine it’s the same way with Jack. Jack’s there on a mission. It’s his fifth year, he’s there to play, there’s no other ways about it. It’s a little different for him. I think it’s like, “I’m not there to make friends with everybody. I’m there to be the starter and lead this team the right way.” I’m not trying to sound rude, you know?

I would just tell Jack to take over that QB room. You’re not gonna make everybody happy. And obviously, you’ve got to compete against four other guys. But you’re there to take the job at the end of the day because you want to play and it’s your fifth year. So go in there and take it and be a leader. That room is wide open. I would say define yourself as a leader first and foremost. That’ll go a long way.

What do you see in Brendon Clark and Drew Pyne? You’ve practiced with them. You’ve been in meetings with them. What do you see?

Brendon Clark, he’s just a gritty guy. He used to joke around, “I want to do anything to help, I’ll run down on kickoff, whatever.” Just that type of guy. Just loves football, tough, wants to get the job done. I think people would say he’s got the ‘it’ factor. He’s a gamer. He was balling out on scout team because he’s able to play free and run around and make plays and he’s got an unbelievably strong arm. People might not know that, but they should. That’s one of his big things.

With Pyne, he’s really smart. He learned the offense, no problem. Spent a lot of time in the playbook, spent a lot of time meeting with Coach Rees. Every meeting I was in, Drew followed along. He just wants to be there and wants to learn. I think his anticipation is one of his best qualities, so that’s another thing for him.

I also want to ask you about Rees and evolving and offense and finding an identity. Last year’s strengths were last year, so how might Rees move the offense in a different way this year?

Coach Rees will do that. I’ve talked to him before, and I remember playing with him even this last season, he’s gonna play to our strengths no matter what, that’s what a good offensive coordinator does. And he’s told me that. I don’t know what that’ll be this year because I’m not there, but I guarantee you whatever the strengths are will be how that offense is structured, whether that’s another great tight end group with Mike Mayer and all those guys and then obviously using Kyren (Williams) and then obviously a new O-line, so finding a way to work around it that way. But he’ll be smart and he’ll get it done, I don’t know which way that’s gonna be though yet.

It’s a weird thing because you create your own offense, so you have a picture in your mind before the season starts of what you want, but then you find out who your key players are and your strengths. So then you tweak it and then next thing you know, what you thought your offense was going to be is completely different. So we found our identity right around like Week 3 or 4. And that was smash-mouth football with physical tight ends and then getting the defense to creep up and being able to hit shots down the field. That was literally our identity. And it’ll probably be the same (in 2021), but once he finds out who those key players are, it’ll revolve around those players. Being able to describe it to someone who doesn’t know football, basically the best thing to say would be he is smart enough to put the right people on the field at the right time in the right place.

You’re obviously out the door with Notre Dame, but being the quarterback here and seeing Name, Image and Likeness coming, what do you make of that? Can you imagine what that future will look like?

I was hearing about it because I had (former teammates) Mick (Assaf) and (Brandon) Wimbush and all those guys in my ear. I don’t know. I can’t even think of a right way to calculate and have an appropriate way to pay college players. But I do think there is some way they should be able to monetize their brand. Maybe it’s through image and likeness, and the jerseys at the bookstore, maybe, I can’t think of a way that makes sense for everybody. Because the linemen in the trenches do all the work, but their jersey doesn’t sell. So it’s just hard to say.

So I can’t tell you the best way, but I do think there should be something. It doesn’t make much sense when the NCAA is on your back, and you literally can’t do anything. Like Johnny Manziel brought millions to your school. Everybody’s in a 12 jersey. Everyone’s Money Manziel, but he can’t see a dollar. There should be something, but I’m not the person that has the answer. I don’t know what it is.

I get the sense talking to you that it’s not like when you saw kids in a 12 jersey around Notre Dame that you thought some of that revenue should have been yours at the time.

I was just happy they’re wearing my jersey. Maybe after the fact if someone said, “Oh my God, they sold 100,000 of 12 jerseys,” then I’d be like, damn. Or if the bookstore hit their highest revenue or something, I don’t know. I was just happy that people were wearing 12.

Now you get that chance to try things out, link up with brands, you have a football camp in South Bend next month. What’s that experience been like to now suddenly be free to explore that kind of stuff? You can monetize the fact you’re Ian Book and you were the Notre Dame quarterback.

It’s awesome. It feels good that you can just do your own thing now and help others but at the same time help yourself out because you’ve worked so hard to create your brand. Now you can make some money off of it. It’s pretty cool. So being able to try things for the brands you love and just being able to literally just focus on football now and working on yourself, building your brand and going through there and being able to have a camp in South Bend is awesome.

I’ve had a lot of kids message me before, asking if I’m having a camp, and I’ve never been able to because of the NCAA, and now it’s awesome. I’m excited to do that. I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do at the camp. I’m pretty sure there’ll be a bunch of stations. And I’ll be roaming around and I think I’ll take a picture with everybody and go through the drills with everyone at each station.

Will you be able to instruct my seven-year old son how to properly throw a spiral?

I will try my best. We can make progress.
