So what I’m hearing here is that the Purdue wr coach had an interview with the expectation that, if it went well, both sides would be agreeable to an offer. He had the interview and, after said interview, they told him we want to interview someone. Sounds to me like the interview did not blow them away and they were ok moving on. And we’re freaking out because…coach d said so? What has come of this board edit: this was before reading Robdog_5 post. Same difference
The only catch in that plan to get "the next Hartline" is for whatever reason it seems like WR Coach at his alma mater is all Hartline ever wants to do so OSU kind of locked in the best WR coach in CFB for the forseeable future. I'm sure if Stuckey is some home run guy, he probably leaves for a lesser OC gig in a year or two. That being said, don't hate the hire.
Our next WR coach SHOULD leave for an OC job in a couple years. That would mean he's good. Bama's staff turns over constantly. We need coaches that other programs want.
The corollary to this is… “Look at all the message board posters giving blind faith to a coaching staff who has no history of hiring coaches hiring a coach with very little history of actual coaching” This is, at best, a very risky hire. And given the position’s history, I’m not sure taking a risk at WR is the position that’s best for ND right now. The Day 0 grade is “iffy, at best”. Luckily, the Day 0 grade never matters and time will tell. I just don’t like the idea of all these coaches learning on the job from other coaches also learning on the job. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Heacock would be a wonderful fit and a home run. Let’s hope that rumor has legs.
ND hires a head coach with zero coaching experience: IM READY TO RUN THROUGH A BRICK WALL!!!! ND hires a WR coach with one year experience at the position: Oh ones, what is you doin? You fellas are a trip.
They could have fucked to the hire either way. Maybe the Purdue coach isn’t a good fit at ND and things go sideways. Like you said, day 0 grades are worthless (which is why I’m not going to get upset or have a feeling either way). If they get it right, it’s great. If not, there’s a better chance they just weren’t going to get it right at all
Overall I’d trust someone Dabo and Aranda endorsed. With freeman taking a look and deciding this was the route to go, I don’t see how we can be pissed. He has southern roots, played in the NFL, and we might’ve snagged a gem. My optimistic self is on board but I know Marcus doesn’t give a fuck what my ass thinks anyway.
that’s a good question because I have no idea if it fits the personnel or if it looks like the Freeman scheme on defense i mean, Freeman is not stupid so I am sure there is a fit somewhere but I would like to know the details of how both could work together
Not sure, but the long and short of it is he runs a very similar aggressive, gap penetration-based 3-3-5 set to what Freeman runs. It’s argued Heacock actually came up with most of those 3-3-5 concepts. He’s known as an Xs and Os savant. A bit on the older side, but that’s not a bad complement to what we have on the rest of the staff.
that will be a good read, just read a few paragraphs and it is exactly what I was looking for. thanks
The ACC is historically bad but they are starting to make shots as Hubb shoots less. Wesley is going to play them out of as many games as he can win.
Was just coming to ask if anyone is watching this? No access in the mountains. Goodwin seems to be turning into a Vasturia sort of good.
Apparently was available on marquee (which I don’t get) and ESPN+ (which I couldn’t find it on) so I followed on Twitter. team looked great tonight it appears
Any rumblings about Elston and Michigan? our rivals(can be bad but occasionally gets a scoop) site is hinting that he’s in negotiation to be um’s next dline coach
Would be a huge shock considering he just turned down another job bc the family didn’t want to move. But maybe the feeling is Michigan is close enough and he wants a new challenge still?
I will really hate this Heacock hire if true, ND sucks at recruiting DB’s so let’s put fucking 5 on the field at all times woof
With DL probably being our most talented (and definitely most experienced) position group next year, I'm not in love with hiring another 3-3-5 guy. All will probably work out fine though considering the safety transfer, development of the young safeties, and assuming much more disruptive LB play next year.
Wasn’t 335 always the move? Freeman said he was going to have the defensive coordinator adjust and wanted him to keep calling the same defense so our players wouldn’t have to learn yet another defense for the 3rd straight year.
I assume this is true, but still don't think it matches well with our current personnel. In 2-3 years? LFG
The reason he stayed supposedly was family including a daughter whose supposed to go to ND soon. This was his quote on why he decided to stay. "At the end of the day, my family is the most important thing in my life,” he said. “To move a daughter who is a junior in high school and starting her senior year and to move a daughter who is 14 and who is a top 15 fencer in the country —a lot of places don't have fencing-I’m pulling her away from an area where she flourishes. It was a family decision for me and it will always be a family decision.”
