he was just like uhh here are some names
Yeah, Al Washington just got run out of Ohio St. Can we not?
If we can’t trust Tom Loy anymore, who can we trust?!
I’d be cool with a super MAC combo of Stockton and Kehres- make them both Co-DC’s and let Kehres call the plays
there were allegations of abuse plus the physical altercation on the sidelines in his last game. that ain't happening
plus he actually sucks as a DC
Al Washington coaching defensive lines is probably > Al Washington coaching linebackers
Perhaps, but for the last four years and at his biggest programs, he's been LB coach with underwhelming results on the field and as a recruiter.
Then again, you're the one signing the paychecks, so it's more important for you to believe in him than me.
Wait he's a bad recruiter? Ohio State has as good of linebacker class as we do
I'm looking more at what they have on the roster at the moment. LB has been one of the weaker units for them on an otherwise stacked roster the last few seasons. Hell, they had to move a TE to play in the Rose Bowl.
Right but he's recruited well since arriving. I wouldn't want him to coach linebackers and we don't need him to.
I always wanted Mike Tressel more than Heacock
Anyone in this thread could have signed that LB class
Two of their LB in their class were going to OSU since birth and Sonny’s decision was easy after he could reclassify
Has he recruited well? Your final product defines your recruiting and his has been pretty poor. He didn't leave OSU voluntarily.
Hell, Del Alexander has actually landed commitments over the years from ranked prospects who either decommitted before signing, transferring or just plain not panning out. OSU's LB corps is in a similar position to our WRs. Hence their change.
I like Heacock for the experience he would bring. Straight apples to apples, give me Tressel.
Given the resistance to Washington, I hope we hire him
I want whoever is going to he able to adjust in-game.
I just worry about a guy who didn't succeed at a place where most have been successful in recent years. Over the past decade, Ohio St. has had very few weak spots. Over the past couple seasons, his unit was one of them.
couldn't one make an argument that throwing for 500 yards a game, and scoring quickly can have an adverse effect on your defense (in game)?
They didn't do that every game. Go back and watch their Oregon game. Their D needed help. There's a reason they are overhauling it.
Freeman saying dc will get to help choose then dl. Hope it’s mike tressel
Stroud threw for 484 yards in the Oregon game FWIW
i dont want washington either btw
I think you can make the argument for a defense overall, but I don’t think that was the case with osu linebacker this year. They just seemed poorly coached and playing some guys that shouldn’t be starting at Ohio state. I think that’s where the concern lies
there really only is one answer here ...
Al Washington is probably the best defensive line coach in the world
Time of possession was 30 seconds from dead even in that game, so it shouldn't have made a difference.
It was all Kerry Coombs fault
People are saying this.
And Billy Davis of course, Al can't do the impossible
I know most ND fans will scoff at this, and I hate(d) Ohio State and Jim Tressel as much as next guy, but getting him closer to the program in any capacity is only going to be a good thing for Notre Dame. We need people around that understand what it means to build a National Championship contender.
Learning from Ohio State shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing, as much as we need to hold our noses in doing so.
I was thrilled when Freeman said he was in contact with him. Give the guy an office and one of the empty town houses on Eddy.
I agree completely.
That's why I'm not crazy about coaches that failed there. They are successful. They have a good model.
Ryan Day will fail there
this is an undeniable fact
He’s already gone from a close loss in the semis in year 1 to winning like 6 games in year 2 (including getting blown out in their last game) to losing to Michigan in year 3. Downward trend is obvious there
I don’t think his trajectory is Marc Helfrich bad, but there are certainly some signs of moving south. His defensive hires this off-season need to work out.
I can think of a good day for taking the next step down that path.
Why the rush to hire a D Line coach and not hire a DC and let him pick his coach? I just do t understand that
That’s what people are saying is going to happen.
I'd enjoy a combo of Tressel, Washington and Combs as a analyst.
just to be clear, Loy did not say that ISU outbid ND for Heacock. He did word it oddly but this is what he said:
He is getting more money to stay at Iowa State. Things were trending in the right direction but he believes this is a better fit for him at this time. Time will tell if it was the right decision or not.
he later clarified that he meant that Iowa State upped his pay to match what ND was offering
my take on all of this - he's an older guy that didn't want to change his surroundings and that i get...why leave if you are happy and getting paid the same?
Sounds like old man was scared to recruit his butt off in the #FreemanEra
With less expectations and working under a defensive coach that has his own scheme
