Agree. NIL would have gotten him at some point. His dad has a tattoo of a um figure pissing on an osu figure, the window to let him go to nd was tiny and closed with nil.

maybe but it's much harder to back out of a public commit than a silent one...the Dante camp might have decided to let things be and leave the commitment alone because it's pretty clear ND is where Dante wanted to be

but yes, it's obviously possible that NIL could have caused him to decommit after a public verbal

    Loy's latest

biggest news here is that Love seems to be leaning towards ND, would be a massive pickup

There are 19 class of 2023 recruits currently committed to Notre Dame. The group includes six Top100 targets headlined by five-star edge-rusher Keon Keeley, the No. 8 overall player in America. In addition, there are another eight commits listed inside the Top247. The class is loaded as as of today it is ranked as the No. 1 class in the country.

That said, the class isn’t done yet. There are still others still in play. Let’s take a look at the names on the board.

    SLIDE1 of 11
Five-star safety Caleb Downs — Notre Dame is in the hunt, but right now it seems as though he’s more likely to land with Alabama, Georgia or Ohio State. The Fighting Irish haven’t given up, but it seems as though he’ll be a tough pull.

    SLIDE2 of 11
Five-star quarterback Dante Moore — The elite quarterback committed to Oregon today. Now the attention turns to a few other names, but to be honest, I don't feel great about them right now. Could the Irish offer Alabama four-star quarterback commit Eli Holstein? Will they make a run at Purdue four-star commit Rickie Collins? How about Baylor four-star commit Austin Novosad? Uncommitted four-star quarterback Brock Glenn is an option. In a perfect world, five-star class of 2024 quarterback commit CJ Carr reclassifies but that isn't a done deal either way yet.

    SLIDE3 of 11

Five-star edge Samuel M’Pemba — Notre Dame remains a top contender in this race. On Friday, he’ll release his Top 7 and I fully expect the Fighting Irish to make the next cut. He’ll be in South Bend for the Clemson game in November and he seems to be in no hurry to make a decision.

    SLIDE4 of 11
Four-star defensive lineman Jason Moore — On Sunday, Moore will announce his commitment. The finalists include Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Maryland. For a while, it seemed as though he was going to end up in South Bend with the Irish. However, the official visits changed things and it looks as though they flipped in favor of Ohio State. That is where my Crystal Ball pick currently sits at this point.

    SLIDE5 of 11

Four-star offensive tackle Monroe Freeling — Notre Dame landed five offensive linemen this cycle and at this point, I don’t see them landing a sixth.

    SLIDE6 of 11
Four-star linebacker Jaiden Ausberry — I’m tempted to place a Crystal Ball in favor of Notre Dame here. I have a lot of people nudging me that way and I’m leaning that way quite heavily, but I just haven’t done it yet. I’m told Notre Dame is the leader, for what it’s worth, but again, I’m remaining patient with the process and continuing to dig.

    SLIDE7 of 11

Four-star running back Jeremiyah Love — I’m tempted to place a Crystal Ball in favor of Notre Dame here. I have a lot of people nudging me that way and I’m leaning that way quite heavily, but I just haven’t done it yet. I’m told Notre Dame is the leader, for what it’s worth, but again, I’m remaining patient with the process and continuing to dig. (No, this isn’t a typo. I genuinely feel the same about Ausberry and Love).

    SLIDE8 of 11
Four-star receiver Jaden Greathouse — On July 15, Greathouse will announce his commitment. He’ll land with either Notre Dame, Oklahoma, South Carolina or Texas. I believe Chansi Stuckey and Tommy Rees get this one done, which is why my Crystal Ball is on Notre Dame.

    SLIDE9 of 11

Four-star receiver Ronan Hanafin — The talented pass-catcher hasn’t set a commitment date yet, but he’s getting close. I like Notre Dame to win this recruitment and that is why my Crystal Ball is on the Fighting Irish. Clemson looks to be the biggest threat to Notre Dame as of today. The battle is closer than most realize, but I do give the edge to ND.

    SLIDE10 of 11
Four-star receiver Malik Elzy — Depending on how things play out at the receiver position this cycle, Notre Dame could make a strong push to land Elzy later in the process. We’ll see how things shake out. He remains a target on the board and a name to track.

    SLIDE11 of 11
    19COMMENTS
Three-star safety Ben Minich — Notre Dame will host him at the end of the month. I believe the Fighting Irish could offer and with the fact that they want five defensive backs this cycle, three safeties and two cornerbacks, I could see them turning up the heat on the Ohio native who is ranked a four-star recruit by 247Sports.

i think that board is upset because of the way he portrayed that recruitment. He said multiple times that NIL wasn't that big of a deal when that was completely false in the end

The silent part and then the Dante backing off of it, no one blames him for I don't think. That is part of recruiting but it really seemed like he was covering for the family with regards to NIL

I think it’s clear he soured on ND before that due to NIL and is now using Carr as an excuse. That one plays a lot better than “ND wouldn’t pay me as much”.

the Book of Dante Moore according to D3

So Dante Moore just picked Oregon, and the long, winding, weird saga is finally over. I want to share all the intel I have on this and also share my opinion on the subject. Here goes.

To begin, a big part of the reason Notre Dame had an “all in” strategy with Dante is that he committed to Notre Dame back in February. That’s a fact. That is when things got very, very strange. Dante was, and I believe still is, very high on Notre Dame. He wanted to come to Notre Dame, but for some reason was never willing to really take that final step, and that’s the odd part. But when Dante first committed to Notre Dame he was talking with the staff about making an announcement in April. There were a couple of dates given, and the talk even then was doing it on ESPN.

At that time Dante was all in on Notre Dame and began recruiting for Notre Dame. True story. Dante recruited HARD for Notre Dame, and that’s not coming from sources at Notre Dame, that’s coming from recruit after recruit after recruit. That’s how all in he was on Notre Dame, especially early on. Everyone knew he was going to Notre Dame, including other schools. He wanted to be at Notre Dame, but he wouldn’t pull the trigger publicly. Every time he would initially talk about ending things, he would then come back later and say no, he was going to still take visits.

Early on his recruitment was all about Midwest schools, and his top programs were Notre Dame, Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. At that time it was a foregone conclusion. The issue, however, is that there were driving forces behind Dante’s recruitment who were not on board with him picking Notre Dame. Once schools outside the Midwest got involved, especially programs that are known to be willing to hand out sizable NIL deals, things started to change. From every single conversation I’ve had with any source, inside our outside of ND, the same message was true, the NIL push didn’t come from Dante. It’s not really what he was all about, he wanted Notre Dame for many reasons. The NIL push came from those around him, and it grew more and more and more.

Those around Dante kept pushing for some sort of NIL guarantee, but Notre Dame simply would not budge, that’s not how they were going to do this. Some will disagree with this, but I think you all know my stance on this, I’m totally fine with it. If a guy needs money to come to your school he’s not all-in on your program. But that is where the pushback against him making an early decision came from. It is also a big reason why Dante didn’t make as many visits in the spring and summer. That is when things started to turn for Notre Dame with Dante.

Dante kept telling Notre Dame he was coming, he never backed off his silent commitment. He kept telling ND commits, he kept telling non-ND commits that he was going to Notre Dame. But the longer this went on the stranger things got. It got to the point where Dante would tell Notre Dame he was all in and he was recruiting other players, but he wouldn’t come back on campus. Every time Notre Dame wanted him on campus he would end up visiting somewhere else. Notre Dame wanted him on campus for the Blue-Gold Game to help recruit, but he chose to go to LSU instead. Notre Dame wanted him on campus the weekend of June 17th and I’m told initially he was good with that. So much so that Notre Dame started changing official visit dates for recruits to that weekend. This isn’t intel I got from anyone at Notre Dame either, this came from those recruits who were being asked to move to the 17th, but then Dante backed out and instead decided he was going to go to Texas A&M. This happened in May.

Notre Dame all but begged him to get back on campus in June but Dante and his people refused to do so. He kept saying he was going to wait until the fall to officially visit.

Early on Dante was adamant he would make a decision this summer, but the more and more it became about Notre Dame, the harder the push came from those around him to drag his recruitment out. The push for taking this into the fall wasn’t about Dante, I’m told, it was about those around him. Simply put, the people influencing Dante’s recruitment the most simply did not want him at Notre Dame for a number of reasons, NIL being one, but it wasn’t the only one. There was a hard push against Notre Dame, and that is why they kept pushing and pushing and pushing for him to not make a decision and to see all these schools first. So we get to the whole, “He’s going to push this into the fall” despite Dante telling Notre Dame he was all about them and wasn’t going to take it that far initially.

It became very apparent to Notre Dame that NIL was going to be far, far more important with Dante than they were led to believe. This next part is my opinion, because none of my sources would admit this out of respect for Dante, but I also believe they figured out what myself and others tied into this recruitment knew, they had strong forces in his recruitment working against them.

This where things got interesting for Notre Dame. They were basically backed into a corner. Do they keep pushing for the kid they wanted in 2023, knowing how much he wanted to be there, while also dealing with the reality that the big influencers in his recruitment were pushing for NIL and pushing against them being the choice, and the constant push for him to drag his recruitment out. Dante kept telling Notre Dame he wanted to come to Notre Dame, but he wasn’t willing to publicly do it and he the visits were going to continue. Schools that weren’t on him early – schools like Texas A&M – suddenly were able to convince him to come down and visit unofficially, but Notre Dame couldn’t get him back on campus. That was problematic, and a major red flag.

Look at this from Notre Dame’s point of view, if you’re them, you have a young man who says he wants to be in your program, but those around him are pushing for NIL deals you’re unwilling to guarantee. What happens if Texas A&M, LSU, Georgia or other programs that are willing to grant those deals are left without a quarterback in November and offer a huge deal. Even if you wait on Dante and he picks you in say July, August or September, what’s your guarantee the same forces driving him to not pick ND now won’t get louder and more forceful when the financial offers get bigger and bigger and bigger later in the year.

This is where CJ Carr comes into play. I said earlier that Dante committed to Notre Dame back in February, and CJ wanted to commit that next month. ND wasn’t pushing for it at the time because they wanted to make sure Dante was good to go and they wanted him to be able to go public first. CJ’s dad also wanted him to take more visits and experience more of the recruiting process. As we got into the spring and summer, CJ was more and more adamant about wanting to come to Notre Dame while Dante’s actions were more and more that of someone who was genuinely interested in other programs.

When it became obvious that Notre Dame couldn’t hold CJ off anymore they had a heart to heart with Dante and told him that they really wanted him to jump on board publicly. He knew CJ wanted to pick Notre Dame but the staff wanted Dante to have a chance to be the guy who went first so he could be the face of the program, and of the recruiting efforts. Once again, Dante refused and then we started hearing more and more about him taking his recruitment into the fall.

Dante said he wanted Notre Dame, CJ said he wanted Notre Dame. Both had people around them saying don’t commit yet. Dante listened to those voices. CJ said no, I want to go to Notre Dame. That was when Notre Dame decided it was going to embrace CJ making his decision now and publicly. One kid wanted to be at Notre Dame and wanted to be able to tell the world, the other one was not willing to truly commit to the program. The other part is that not everyone within the program had Dante as the top QB on the board. Some in the program loved Dante, no question, but they felt CJ was the better player. So it was never about settling for CJ because Dante didn’t want Notre Dame, it was that they loved both, and CJ was good enough to where they weren’t willing to risk losing him to wait for Dante to take a million visits and play the game.

They needed an elite quarterback to become the face of the program. Dante wasn’t willing to publicly be that. CJ Carr was. That’s why CJ Carr is now a Notre Dame commit and Dante Moore is now an Oregon commit.

This next part is my opinion and the opinion of others at IB, so this is where the intel stops for a second. With those around Dante being more anti-Notre Dame than they were pro-NIL, CJ Carr going public was all the ammo they needed to break the bond Dante had with Notre Dame. At that moment his entire attitude towards Notre Dame changed, his communication with commits changed. Then the stuff about reclassification got out and that was it for Notre Dame, even though that was way, way too early to be discussing that as a definite for Carr, but it still got out. They stayed on Dante after CJ committed, they still wanted Dante, but it had to be now or they would have to move on, and for the final time he was unwilling to do it, so they moved on.

And now, with Notre Dame out of the picture, all of a sudden those around Dante are 100% on board with him making a summer decision.

I truly believe if Notre Dame would have stayed on Dante and if the reclassification stuff had not gotten out he would still have ultimately picked Notre Dame, but there are no guarantees. At the end of the day, I understand Notre Dame’s uneasiness the longer this dragged on. Yeah, they could have landed him, I’d argue they should have landed him, but if you have forces working that hard against you, if you have a young man who is that unwilling to go public, with influential people around him that focused on NIL, you can’t afford to run the risk of taking him, perhaps not getting CJ Carr, and then being left in November with neither.

Notre Dame had to finally draw a line in the sand, they finally had to truly put Dante on the spot to find out where his heart truly was, and no matter how much he said he wanted to be at Notre Dame, every time he had a chance to make that decision public, to fully commit, he balked. Here’s another bit of intel, I was told by multiple sources that Notre Dame even told Dante they were willing to let him commit and still take visits, that’s how much they bent over backwards to get him to jump in the class, and every time he refused to publicly commit.

That was never an issue for CJ Carr. The opposite was true. There were never NIL requests. There were never ultimatums that needed to be given. He had to be forced to take more visits, but eventually he said he was done, there was only one place for him …. Notre Dame. As much as I wanted Dante in the class, as much as I think deep down he wanted to be at Notre Dame, the fact he was unwilling to take the wheel of his recruitment and say, “Hey, I love y’all, but this is my life and my decision, I’m going to Notre Dame” had to eventually force me to accept that the all-in strategy I supported had to be moved on from.

There are some more things I wish I could tell, but I’ve been asked not to. But they are details that back up the intel I provided above. They wouldn’t only enforce things, so there isn’t any context lacking from this.

it's a very fascinating read (worth the time and effort) and it lines up with everything that happened

I had no idea Dante silently committed in Feb. That explains why the Vizzina visit was called off in early March.

Bowden talking to reporters about how important Dante was and getting him to commit publicly also lines up with D3's story.

ND suddenly making June 17th a second big OV weekend for Dante also lines up with D3's story.

The way everything went down with Carr also makes sense.

In the end, D3 was on top of it and had the best reporting of this crazy recruitment.

I can’t get it to copy but coach d wrote pages just now. Dante committed on February to announce in April. His family hated nd and wanted nil so wouldn’t let him visit or commit. Dante’s family used the carr commitment and the talk of reclassification to convince him nd had moved on. All the sudden they were fine with a summer commitment.

Ipso facto, Dante’s visit in the Spring when everyone thought he was going to publicly commit happened to come a week after Nico’s NIL deal broke publicly. From that point, the visit became about NIL for the Moore’s and not Dante making a commitment immediately. And from there, he shifted quickly away from ND.

This couldn’t have been more easy to predict. We said it literally months ago.

Why our beat writers were so slow to realize it is honestly shocking.

Its pretty rare for a parent to be so anti-ND, especially a Midwest parent.

Sounds like even if we did a guaranteed NIL deal his dad didn't want him here. And now he has to get on planes to the west coast every weekend to see his son. Bizarre.

Can't remember the last recruitment where a kid wanted to come and his son didn't. Had to be so hard for D3, Loy, and others not to report more of "man, Dante Moore is pushing me hard to ND" when he was recruiting them.

Dante according to Loy and I truly believe Loy is sugar coating it about NIL

D3's version is much better and closer to the truth based on all the actions that took place

On Friday, Detroit (Mich.) King five-star quarterback Dante Moore committed to Oregon over scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas A&M, LSU and many, many others from across the country. It was a massive win for the Ducks, head coach Dan Lanning and offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham.

With this recruitment over, I wanted to share some thoughts and put all of this to rest. I understand that others may not want to address it and just move on, but I prefer to put a few thoughts on paper before completely turning the page.

There have been a lot of rumors spread across the internet, which happens because, well, it’s the internet and people like to do exactly that. I’m not getting into the rumors. You guys know me. That’s not my style. I’m not getting into the financials or NIL deals and to be completely honest, when it came time for Dante to pick a school, I truly don’t believe that NIL was as big a factor for him as others make it seem. NIL is real, it’s legal and it’s going to help, especially with travel from Detroit to Eugene, but again, I don’t think Dante himself was looking at that when picking a school. I stand by my feelings that when it came to picking a program to play for, he found the best fit for him and his future.

Moore absolutely wants to win a National Championship in college. Multiple sources indicated to me that behind closed doors, that was the biggest thing he would talk about in his meetings with coaches. On-field success was something he was adamant about and he badly wants to win a title at the next level. He doesn’t want to be good, he wants to be great. He believes he can do that at Oregon. He’s one of the most competitive kids I’ve met and he’s going to pick a school that will allow him that opportunity for success and he believes that the Ducks give him that.

On a recruiting front, big shout to Dillingham. The guy worked his tail off with Moore. The relationship started back when he worked at Florida State and things didn’t change once he arrived at Oregon. He made Moore priority No. 1. That connection was always there. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t see Moore picking a school this far from home and my well-placed sources agreed with that take. However, in the end, Dillingham was able to get him comfortable with the distance and Moore found a home in Eugene.

Regarding Notre Dame, I do feel very confident in reporting that Moore was a silent commitment to the Fighting Irish. If people want to refute that or say I’m wrong, then it is what it is. However, I do feel accurate in reporting that. Moore visited for 48 hours on March 28-29 and it was that weekend that Notre Dame separated themselves from the pack. The trip couldn’t have gone better and before leaving campus, my sources indicated that he informed offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and head coach Marcus Freeman that he was in. That said, Moore wanted to go through the process, enjoy the much-deserved visits with his family and make sure that he was 100% confident in his decision before eventually announcing his plans. As a top-flight prospect, he deserves that. He's allowed those trips and he rightfully wanted to take them and that is not something anyone should blame him for. Notre Dame had no issues with that. Sure, they wanted him to just go public, start recruiting, and be done with the process. However, they understood and respected it and was on board with him taking his time. So, that’s what took place. Notre Dame then made the decision to stop or slow the pursuit of quarterback Christopher Vizzina, who eventually picked Clemson, and they shut down quarterback recruiting for the 2023 cycle. They had their quarterback in Moore, he was the first to jump in and claim the spot, so they stopped communication with other targets. Let's also call a silent commitment what it is — a recruit naming a leader behind the scenes. To be honest, even a public commitment is the same thing. Until pen hits paper, all you can do is continue recruiting these guys and hoping for the best. Everyone knows things are always subject to change. That's recruiting. It's part of the game.

Things changed after that. There is really not a ton that needs to be said. From what I gathered, Moore had a change of heart and decided to not end up at Notre Dame. It’s of my opinion that if things had been handled differently with the commitment of CJ Carr, Moore may have still ended up at Notre Dame. That’s just my feeling on it and that could be wrong. But I don’t blame anyone at Notre Dame for how they handled the recruitment of Carr. In fact, I think they landed an absolute dude at the position and one that will be a difference-maker in South Bend. This is a young man that they have been extremely high on for a few years now and they didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity at landing Carr. They accepted his commitment without batting an eye. They badly wanted Carr because he’s an exceptional talent and he was ready to jump in and start recruiting hard for the Fighting Irish. The staff knew it was fairly risky, seeing as though there was enough out there that stated Carr and Moore likely end up at different schools despite both denying that being a thing, but they were absolutely not going to pass on Carr, who they see as an elite talent just like Moore. They knew that this could potentially hurt them with Moore and they still took Carr, which tells you exactly how they feel about the quarterback from Saline, Mich. They knew Carr was ready to commit, not just silently but publicly, and they were ready to have their quarterback of the future on board. According to my sources, Moore was told before, at the time and even after Carr’s commitment that he was still welcome to commit if he wants in the class. The staff told him he was still their guy for the 2023 cycle, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Oregon landed, in my opinion, the best or second best quarterback in the 2023 class and Notre Dame did exactly that in the 2024 class. Now we all wait and see if Carr ends up reclassifying and arriving in the summer of 2023 or if he plays his junior and senior seasons and enrolls in Jan. 2024.

So, why didn't I put in a Crystal Ball prediction for Moore? When I spoke to him in Atlanta at the Pylon event back in mid-March, I flat-out asked him for his thoughts on it. He wasn't a big fan of the Crystal Ball, but he understood the point of it and why we have it. I knew what happened between him and Moore behind the scenes and regarding the potential silent commitment to Notre Dame. I said if he didn't want me to put a pick in, I wouldn't. I care more about the relationship with these guys than just throwing a pick in, even a VIP one, especially when I know it's going to immediately be pulled onto all social media platforms and made free, which I can't really do anything about. It would be different if I could ensure that it was kept private for subscribers only. He knew I was going to put it on Notre Dame and I didn't care to do it if it tipped people off regarding his landing spot. I want these guys to be able to have their moment. Again, unless I'm mistaken, which I don't believe I am, he was going to end up with the Fighting Irish at the time which is why I believe he preferred I didn't put the pick in. I gave him the option, as I've done with others in the past, and I said I wouldn't toss it in. No issue for me though. You guys knew how I felt and that's what is also most important. I didn't need to plaster it across all platforms for you guys, our subscribers, to know that I felt he was headed to Notre Dame. At the time, I expected a decision around summer time but didn't expect so much to change and for Notre Dame to eventually miss out on landing him. That's where I was mistaken. I didn't see the change of heart coming and didn't expect him to head elsewhere.

A couple final thoughts after all of this rambling... Moore is an all-time favorite of mine. I couldn’t care less about where he ended up. I want these guys to all live out their dreams and be successful at the next level. This is a kid that I always enjoyed dealing with from the first conversation we ever had until the last because he’s the same guy every time you talk with him, on or off the record. I know other analysts would agree, especially ones that know him well. He’s a unique personality. He’s all substance. There isn’t a lot of fluff or recruit talk or generic answers when you really get him to open up. It makes my job fun. I’m already looking forward to San Antonio at the All-American Bowl. Not just to watch him throw it around at an elite level, but to continue getting to know him and the others there on a deeper level and watching them thrive. That’s what all of this is about anyway. It’s not about the drama and rumors and the negativity that people spew on social media when a kid doesn’t pick your favorite school. It’s about understanding that these are all human beings that are doing what they think is best for them and wishing for nothing but greatness down the road (maybe except when they are going against your favorite team). This was one of the more wild recruitments I’ve ever covered because it had some twists and turns, but like I said, I think it genuinely came down to comfort and fit and Moore found that as a Duck.

the hate probably wasn't quite the same for ND as it was OSU but I'm sure it made it hard for Dante to pick ND

the shame of it all is that we could/should have had Dante in 23 and Carr in 24 and we were on the road to a Natty but thems is the break sometimes

el oh el at envisioning Loy having to explain the Crystal Ball process to high school kids and whether or not they feel comfortable if he places one in their name

Those conversations need to be recorded and put in the Louvre.

Wouldn’t shock me if he flips, but not to ND.

Depending how things go the rest of the cycle with their QB recruiting, TAMU can drop that 11th hour bag and totally blow things open.

I will throw this out there though, if the market for qbs is like that nd probably should find a way to get in the game. Nd won’t luck out every year with a talented qb who is already well off and doesn’t need the money.

He's going to have essentially the same career as Justin Herbert and get taken in the top 10 only his dad will make a few million bucks. Pretty decent deal, but yeah winning championships is just a soundbite.
